1976 Ford Escort Mk2 RS2000 Group 1 Rally Car

Registration no. SCA 227P
Chassis no. GCATSL86849
*Purpose-built rally car from new

*Ex-Ford Finland
*Driven by Timo Mäkinen, Antero Laine, Lasse Lampi, and Kyösti Hämäläinen
*Finnish Historic Rally Championship winner in 2011 and 2012

  • It was the Escort that really put Ford on the rallying map, proving capable of winning World Championship events from 1968 when the Twin Cam model was the works' frontline rally car, right through to 1981 when Ari Vatanen became World Rally Champion driving an Escort RS. Ford customers could choose between GT and 1.6-litre Twin Cam or - later on - RS1600 and Mexico models. Manufactured at Ford's Advanced Vehicles Operations plant, the latter pair were closely related, the Mexico being, in effect, an RS1600 fitted with a 1.6-litre OHV Kent engine in place of the RS1600's 16-valve Cosworth BDA. Both models had shortcomings: the Mexico being not fast enough for many while the 'homologation special' RS1600, although very quick, was expensive to produce and required careful maintenance. The answer lay in a new model: the RS2000. Powered by the 2.0-litre single-overhead camshaft Pinto engine, the RS2000 was a huge success, proving quicker than the Mexico and easier to live with than the RS1600.

This beautiful Ford Escort RS2000 Mk2 has played a prominent role in Ford's impressive rallying history. It has been a purpose-built rally car for its entire life, mainly contesting major rallies in Finland. This impressive history has been fully documented since 1977, including all rally results and who drove the car. The latter includes true masters of the sport such as Timo Makinen, Antero Laine, Lasse Lampi, and Kyosti Hamalainen, who drove this Escort to podium finishes on numerous occasions as a privateer on behalf of Ford Finland (results list on file).

The Escort was completely rebuilt in 2010 in accordance with the Group 1 regulations. A valid Historical Technical Passport is present and all special parts are homologated. The result of this painstaking preparation is reflected in its winning the Finnish Historic Rally Championship in 2011 and 2012. Equipped with Weber 44IDF carburettors, a big-bore exhaust manifold, Group 1 camshaft, and larger valves, the engine produces 152bhp engine. The gearbox is a four-speed Rocket unit, while the Atlas rear axle is equipped with a ZF limited-slip differential and a 4.63:1 crown wheel/pinion. The special suspension features Bilstein 300/70 struts.

The Ford Escort is the perfect rally car because it is well balanced and therefore easy to drift. This car is potentially competitive in all types of rallies, whether they are held on snow and ice, tarmac, or the desert sands.

  • Ex-'Butch Racing Team' car and ex-Spa 24 hours in 1974 and 1975
  • Perfect candidate to be rebuilt to Group 1 Historic Touring Car specification for HTCC and Goodwood Member's meeting
  • Believed to have been last raced in 1981 and still wearing that livery
  • Offered with a BMIHT Certificate and a spare set of wheels/tyres
Although the Triumph Dolomite range, introduced in 1972, had proved to be refined and sporty, competitors such as BMW's 2002 had a performance advantage which was costing Triumph dearly, both in terms of sales and prestige. To remedy this, they unveiled the Dolomite Sprint in June 1973, although the launch had been delayed by a year, having been due to go on sale in 1972 alongside the main range.
A  team of engineers, led by Spen King, developed a 16-valve, single overhead camshaft head.  The capacity was increased to 1,998cc and combined with bigger carbs the output was upped to 127 bhp. This represented a significant increase over the smaller 1850cc variant, however, it fell frustratingly short of the original target of 135 bhp. As a result of this new engine, the Dolomite Sprint has a claim to be the world's first truly mass-produced multi-valve car and the design of the cylinder head won a British Design Council Award in 1974. The performance was excellent, with 0-60 mph taking around 8.4 seconds and a maximum speed of 119 mph.
We are informed that this particular Dolomite Sprint entered the 1974 Spa 24 Hours as part of a four-car team sponsored by Butch Tailors - the 'Butch Racing Team'. Car no. 46 was driven by Claude De Wael & Etienne Staelpart and the team also ran the car that finished 5th overall driven by the famous pairing of Tony Dron and Andy Rouse.  Whilst running very well in the top ten, this particular car (chassis 2110) unfortunately failed in the 23rd hour (listed as suspension maladies but believed to be a rear axle failure). The following year, it's believed the car was entered in the 1975 Spa 24 hours, again as part of the Butch Racing Team entry. The car was eventually to end up in the ownership of Nelio Brunetti, along with its sister car # 3353. Brunetti continued to use this car in European Touring Car events held mainly in Belgium and Italy.
Believed to have been last raced in 1981, # '2110' now remains exactly as it was when it returned from its last outing, in this distinctive Black, Orange and White colour scheme with sponsorship by 'Mach 3' (Belgian shoe-makers) and Brunetti's name on the roof. However, open the bonnet and boot lid and yellow paint from its original Butch Racing Team livery is still evident, confirming its originality. Since then '2110' and sister chassis '3353' have remained together for most of their lives passing through European dealers until they both ended up in the hands of Dirk Van Gorp, from whom the previous owner purchased it. For the past 2 years, the car has been professionally stored in dehumidified storage maintaining its period look.
A 'British Motor Industry Heritage Trust' Certificate accompanies the 'Dolly' and confirms '2110' was built on the 12th July 1973. The original wheels, along with various other components, are included in the sale. This car would be the perfect candidate to rebuild to Group 1 Historic Touring Car specification and obtain FIA papers to ensure that it is fully eligible for HTCC and some of the most prestigious events, including perhaps, the Gerry Marshall Trophy at the Goodwood Members Meeting, the Algarve Classic Festival and the Spa Six Hours Endurance weekend. In short, this Dolly needs adopting and returning to its former glory.

1975 PORSCHE 911 'SAFARI SPEC' RALLY CAR
Registration: KNH 909N
Chassis Number: 9115201588
Engine Number: Not Specified
Number of cylinders: 6
CC: 2994
Year of Manufacture: 1975
RHD/LHD: Left Hand Drive
Estimate (£): 60,000 - 70,000
(+buyer's premium of 15% including VAT @ 20%)

  • Originally a 1975 3.0 SC according to the Porsche CoA. Matching numbers engine and original colours
  • Built in 2008/2009 by Tuthill Porsche to full East African Safari spec at a cost of £129,500 (excluding the original car)
  • Campaigned in numerous Rallies including four East African Safaris and the Rallye International du Maroc in 2010
  • Post-completion, there are receipts for work totalling almost £150,000. Pictures of the impressive build are in the file
  • Since the last outing in 2015, the car has been serviced by Tuthill Porsche and is ready to go again
  • Spare wheels and tyres are included, together with all the right bits to make it competitive once more

First, run in 2003, the legendary East African Safari Classic Rally is a nine-day endurance event covering up to 5,000 kilometres through Kenya and Tanzania and rekindles the spirit of the original Safari Rally, which put East Africa on the motorsport map and earned an unassailable reputation as the world's toughest rally. Open to two-wheel drive, normally aspirated, FIA rally cars built before 1986, the Safari Classic replicates the incredible challenge of the original Safari and weaves a new adventure through the magical East African landscape, passing through world famous game parks and overnighting at many of the finest lodges in the cradle of Africa.

The name of Oxfordshire-based, Tuthill Porsche, has now become synonymous with Porsches 911s and the Classic Safari. Their motorsport credentials were established in 1977, when Francis Tuthill competed on the London-Sydney Rally in a Volkswagen Beetle and many years later the company now lead the world in preparing winning cars for marathon events including The East African Safari Classic, the  Peking to Paris Rally and many other globe-trotting adventures, not to mention shorter but equally demanding events across Europe and beyond. Their list of successes in the Safari is long but includes the first Safari Rally win for a Porsche 911 with former World Champion, Björn Waldegård and the second 911 win with former World Champion, Stig Blomqvist.

This remarkable Porsche was originally a 1975 3.0SC according to the Porsche CoA and, despite its many adventures, retains its matching numbers engine and original colours. It was built during 2008/09 by Tuthill Porsche to full East African Safari spec at a cost of £129,500 (excluding the original car) which illustrates the degree of preparation involved. In fact, since completion, we understand that our vendor has a neat pile of receipts/invoices totalling around £150K, so at this guide price, this package looks like a very attractive proposition.

Its CV looks very impressive indeed with a 7th overall in the East African Safari 2009, Rallye International du Maroc 2010 (5th overall), East African Safari 2011 (16th overall), East African Safari 2013 (22nd overall) and East African Safari 2015 (9th overall).

The seats were replaced prior to the 2015 Safari and since then the car has been serviced and readied for action by Tuthill Porsche. We believe that the fuel tank may now out of date (Tuthills are able to replace this) but other than that, we understand the car is ready to go again and still has all the right bits to make it competitive once more. The Porsche is accompanied by spare wheels and tyres, its MSA Logbook, full details of the build spec, and lots of photographs, so if a Classic East African Safari is on your bucket list, this could be a remarkably simple way of 'ticking that box'.
