Based at Chemin-Feuillat in Lyon, Rochet-Schneider was one of Les Grands Marques of the Edwardian period in France. The firm was so-called because it was initially run by the Rochets, father and son, together with Théophile Schneider, a member of the eponymous armaments manufacturing family. Originally, bicycle manufacturers, Société Anonyme des Établissements Rochet-Schneider built its first automobile in 1894, and in 1901 at the Paris Salon exhibited two cars of Panhard configuration. However, by this time the most advanced type of car was the German Mercedes, so for 1903, the Lyonnaise cars were redesigned along Mercedes lines. From the introduction of that year's 20/22hp model, Rochet-Schneider's reputation as the builder of strong, fast cars grew rapidly, fully justifying the firm's description of its products as 'Les voitures de qualité'.
Offered here is an example of the 18hp 9300 Series, a 3.7-litre, four-cylinder model first introduced in 1910. Its generously proportioned open-drive landaulet coachwork affords the occupants ample space, while there is additional occasional seating in the rear compartment. The current vendor purchased this stately French Edwardian at the Sharp Collection sale in June 2005, since when it has been carefully stored, the engine being run once several years ago. Re-commissioning, at the very least, will be required before returning the car to the road. Sold strictly as view

Founded in 1919 and all but forgotten now, Donnet-Zedel had grown to become France's fourth-largest motor manufacturer by 1927. Formerly engaged in the manufacture of flying boats, Jérôme Donnet purchased Automobiles Zedel of Pontarlier to create the Donnet-Zedel marque, whose first offering was the CI-6, a pre-war Zedel design. In 1925 the firm introduced the highly successful Type G, a 1,098cc four-cylinder light car, which was built in considerable numbers in the former Donnet aircraft factory at Gennevilliers, Seine. With the sale of Zedel's old factory at Pontarlier in 1928, the Donnet-Zedel name was dropped.

Hit by the Depression-like so many of its contemporaries, Donnet continued to build cars, albeit in declining numbers, until the firm ceased production in December 1934. Its Nanterre factory was then sold to Henri-Théodore Pigozzi, who commenced production of built-under-licence FIATs under the SIMCA name.

Offered here is a charming French saloon car that has benefited from a 'ground upwards' restoration carried out in the late 1980s/early 1990s. More recent works have included fitting new tyres; replacing the clutch; fitting new upgraded brake shoes, and overhauling the steering box. Everything works and the car comes with a history file containing invoices for recent works totalling £6,000. The original dynamo and carburettor are included in the sale together with a bespoke distributor conversion kit that was specially made for the car.

Told by the post-war government to 'export or die', the British motor industry responded valiantly, none more so than Jaguar, soon to become the UK's biggest US dollar earner. Indeed, Jaguar's Mark IV drophead coupé was built almost exclusively for export, the majority being allocated to the USA. Production spanned little more than a year (1947-1948) during which only 184 Mark IV 3½-Litre drophead coupés were built in right-hand drive configuration plus a further 317 LHD cars, 49 of which were delivered in 'Complete Knocked Down (CKD) form.

In his definitive book on the marque: SS & Jaguar Cars, written in association with Jaguar Heritage using their detailed archives, Allan Crouch states that there are only 46 right-hand drive 3½-Litre drophead coupés left in the world, making this exclusive variant among the rarest of all Jaguar's post-WW2 production cars.

This 3½-litre Mark IV was in pristine working order when it was purchased by the current owners in 1982 following its 'Car of the Year' award at London's Earls Court Motor Show. Over the course of the last 39 years, the Jaguar has been maintained and kept in running order, including extensive work in 2003 that included a complete engine overhaul and a new exhaust system. More recently the clutch was replaced, since when the Mark IV has been used for a number of family weddings. It has seen very little use in recent times and is sold strictly as viewed.
