1952 DAIMLER BARKER SPECIAL SPORT - COYS AUCTIONS Fontwell House Sale Chichester Thursday 12th September 2019

FEATURED AUCTION

1952 DAIMLER BARKER SPECIAL SPORT
Registration No: MLY 110
Chassis No: 159087

The Daimler Special Sports is based upon the post-war DB18 chassis with several important modifications, the most notable being an overdrive gearbox, high ratio differential, hydro/mechanical brakes, alloy cylinder head and twin carburettors. The standard DB18 chassis had built-in jacks, an automatic lubrication system and heater as standard, which also feature on this car.
The title Special Sports is a misnomer, the car should rightly be regarded as a comfortable high-speed touring car. Its seasoned ash frame, heavy upholstered seats, thick Wilton carpet and beautifully crafted wooden trim, give a weight to the car which reduces the effectiveness of the twin carbs and alloy cylinder head.
However, the car will comfortably cruise at 60mph plus and is easily capable of motorway speeds. The long wheelbase and excellent suspension, independent at the front, iron out the bumps and give the car a lovely long-legged ride. The chassis of the DB18 range rarely give cause for concern, they are built of high-grade steel and well-engineered.
This car has had a ground-up restoration and when completed was the centrefold in Practical Classics magazine. A truly elegant open-top tourer and a very rare piece of British motoring history.

1988 FORD ESCORT RS TURBO - COYS AUCTIONS Fontwell House Sale Chichester Thursday 12th September 2019

FEATURED AUCTION

COYS AUCTIONS
Fontwell House Sale
Chichester
Thursday 12th September 2019

1988 FORD ESCORT RS TURBO
Registration No: F965 AEL

The ‘Series 2’ Escort RS Turbo (produced between 1986-1990) was in many ways a much better car than the Series 1. New features were adopted for the Series 2 including utilising the 1600cc, fuel-injected CVH engine from the Series 1 Turbo but now fitted with the Garret T3 Turbo (water-cooled, unlike the S1), revised engine management settings, lower overall gearing, an improved gearbox and limited-slip differential, a larger clutch, improved KE Jetronic unit, and an intercooler.
Suspension and chassis changes included stiffer front and rear springs, uprated anti-roll bars, mechanical ABS and larger brakes. The Series 2 car produced an impressive 132bhp at 5,750rpm, with maximum torque of 133 lb/ft at 2,750rpm, giving it serious performance with a top speed of 125mph and a 0-60mph time of 8.3 seconds. Although on paper, these figures were slightly less competitive than the Series 1, the new car was considerably easier to drive quickly and, effectively, was a faster car for it.

This rare grey, left-hand drive car was imported in August 1998. The car shows only 33,000 miles on the odometer and judging by the condition of the car it looks to be true. The car’s interior is clean and in good condition as is the paintwork and mechanicals. The car is no different underneath being very well presented and has recently benefitted from a service which included the cambelt. The vendor describes the car as being in excellent condition and that it runs and drives well. With so many of these cars suffering from rust and modifications, it is becoming increasingly hard to find an original, unmolested and solid example. A superb opportunity and certainly a rare car in this condition.

1999 JAGUAR XJS KOENIG - COYS AUCTIONS Fontwell House Sale Chichester Thursday 12th September 2019

FEATURED AUCTION

COYS AUCTIONS
Fontwell House Sale
Chichester
Thursday 12th September 2019

1999 JAGUAR XJS KOENIG
Chassis No: SAJJW4DC160226
Registration No: G566 ATL

The XJ-S had been under development since 1968 and as a 2+2 fixed head coupe was intended as a replacement for the now-legendary E-type. From the beginning, it was only available with the V12 engine which gave excellent performance with 0-60mph being dispatched in a very respectable 6.9 seconds and a top speed of 150mph. Later in the XJ-S’s life, it was also available with a six-cylinder engine and a manual gearbox. As with any vehicle that has had as long a production life as the XJ-S there have been major developments. One of the more significant ones for the XJ-S was the launch of the convertible in May 1988.
The example presented here is the only V12 Convertible that Koenig made out of the 14 built worldwide. This 1990 Jaguar XJS Koenig special was designed by famed racecar driver, builder and tuner Willie Koenig, whose custom-built specials are famous for their raucous performance and ability to turn heads.
In 1990 when new, this car was sent from Jaguar to Koenig to carry out the conversion.
Koenig carried out major body, suspension, drive train and ECU modifications that make up the Koenig package. Over $100,000 was initially invested in remaking the Jaguar in the Koenig image, including upgrading the luxurious 5.3-litre V-12 engine. Major body modifications involved adding a hood scoop, front, roof and rear air dams and, most noticeably, the wide fender flares that add almost two feet to the car’s width at the rear, and to the tread on the huge 315 rear tyres. The handling is further improved with the addition of Koenig springs, redesigned shackles and special Koni shocks, while the interior, with its burgundy interior, was left almost completely unchanged aside from a Koenig steering wheel.

With just one owner from new and 74,000 km covered in the last 29 years, this ultra-rare special edition is perfect for a unique, extroverted collector’s piece.

Saturday 7th September 2019
Beaulieu, National Motor Museum

1950 Studebaker Land Cruiser Sedan
Registration no. 221 UXG
Chassis no. 17A 75532

Footnotes

  • Offered here is an example of the sensational 'Bullet Nose' Studebakers, a landmark of automotive styling clearly influenced by the coming of the 'Jet Age', which had been designed by Raymond Loewy and Virgil Exner. Introduced for 1950, the 'Bullet Nose' Studebaker Land Cruiser sat at the very top of the company's more expensive Commander line up. It was powered by the 245.6ci (4,026cc) 102bhp side-valve six-cylinder engine and had a three-speed column-shift manual transmission.

This example of a Classic American rarely seen in the UK was sold new in August 1950 to its first owner, who used the car to travel to and from his place of work at the Naval Ordnance Test Station at China Lake in the Western Mojave Desert, California. Second owner Edward Haines purchased the Studebaker in 1973 and owned the car for some 30 years in both California and Utah. He then sold it to a friend in the UK, David Loewy of Sussex. The current (fourth) owner purchased the car in 2014.

Recent works carried out include a strip down and re-spray (2017); overhauling the gearbox and overdrive (2019); fitting electronic ignition; replacing the centre prop-shaft bearing and rubbers; overhauling the carburettor, generator, and starter motor; and fitting a bypass (manual) choke. The electrics had already been rewired by Mr Loewy. Offered with bills and a V5C document.
