1985 Ford Escort 1.6i Cabriolet - Silverstone Auctions Silverstone Circuit (The Wing Building, NN12 8TN) Saturday 31st July and Sunday 1st August

Welcome back to Classic Chatter and our look at what is coming to auction in the UK.
It's been a difficult time for everyone over the last 18 months but the future looks better and we all hope normality is just around the corner.

OUR FEATURED AUCTION

Silverstone Auctions
Silverstone Circuit (The Wing Building, NN12 8TN)
Saturday 31st July and Sunday 1st August

1985 Ford Escort 1.6i Cabriolet
Lot No: 407
Registration No: B595 KNP
Chassis No: WF0LXXGKALES17652
Engine No: ES17652

  • Third-generation 1.6i Cabriolet with just two previous keepers
  • Always kept in heated storage and maintained diligently
  • A level of originality to satisfy even the most pedantic of Ford collectors
  • Factory wax and markings still evident.
  • Spare wheel and jack completely untouched
  • MOT history supports ultra-low mileage and the condition is wholly commensurate
  • Accompanied by full book-pack, rare Cabriolet booklet and two keys

The Mk3 Ford Escort was unveiled to the public in September 1980 (internally codenamed ‘Erika’) and was entirely new from the ground up in terms of styling, engineering and mechanicals, the only thing carried over from the previous generations of Escort was the name. This meant that the car deviated from the traditional rear-wheel drive and followed the industry trend of producing wind tunnel-designed, front-wheel drive hatchbacks (all Escorts prior had been saloons) ready to embrace Europe. So well received was the car that it won the much-coveted European Car of the Year in 1981.

A convertible version, made by coachbuilder Karmann, appeared in 1983 and was the first drop-top car produced by Ford Europe since the Corsair of the 1960s. Powered by the unmistakable rasp of the 1.6-litre injected CVH engine, it wore ‘Cloverleaf’ alloy wheels and a sharp pin-strip coachline, just what the market wanted.

The car presented here is a totally unrestored 1985 Escort 1.6i Cabriolet, amazingly still sat on its original Dunlop tyres and with evidence of original factory wax on the underside. It wears its original front and rear supplying-dealer number plates and rear window sticker, the factory quality-control stickers are still in situ in the boot and paint marks from the factory are still visible on all the torqued bolts. The spare wheel and jack have never been used but, most memorably, that, hard to describe, new car smell is there the minute you open the door.

The all-original CVH engine is barely run in and is commensurate with the rest of the car and its indicated mileage of just over 3,000. The car is accompanied by its logbook, Ford dealer network book, Escort manual and ultra-rare Escort Cabriolet booklet, plus 2 sets of keys (with one set still having a key tag number attached). Unfortunately, the service history was lost in a house move.

If originality is king for collectors of classic cars, this Ford Escort Cabriolet is certainly royalty; what a great way into owning a classic Ford and would be made very welcome at any owner's club event.

FEATURED AUCTION

SILVERSTONE AUCTIONS
Race Retro Sale
Saturday 22nd February 2020
Warwickshire Exhibition Centre
Stoneleigh Park, Kenilworth CV8 2LG

1990 FORD ESCORT RS TURBO S2
Registration No: H308 EGS
Chassis No: WF0BXXGCABLM47836

  • /The Series 2 Escort RS Turbo (1986 - 1990) was a much more civilised driving prospect
  • 1600cc, fuel-injected CVH engine now fitted with a water-cooled Garret T3 turbo
  • Revised engine management, improved gearbox, larger clutch and a limited-slip differential
  • Residing with our vendor since 2001 and mainly mothballed with limited usage
  • Fully recommissioned this year including cambelt, all fluids and a brake overhaul
  • A comprehensive history and the MOT is valid until 31/07/2020
Based on the success of the previous model, the S2 Escort RS Turbo (produced between 1986-1990) was more suited to the road, whereas the earlier car was a bit of a homologation special. Many new features were adopted for the Series 2 including utilising the 1600cc fuel-injected CVH engine taken from the S1 Turbo but now fitted with the Garret T3 turbo (water-cooled, unlike the S1), revised engine management settings, lower overall gearing, an improved gearbox and limited-slip differential, a larger clutch and improved KE-Jetronic unit and inter-cooler. Suspension and chassis changes included stiffer front and rear springs, uprated anti-roll bars, mechanical ABS and larger brakes. The S2 produced an impressive 132bhp at 5750 rpm, with maximum torque of 133 lb/ft produced at 2750 rpm, offering ample performance with a top speed of 125 mph and a 0-60mph time of 8.3 seconds. Although on paper these figures were a tad down on Series 1, the new car was considerably easier to drive quickly and, effectively, was a faster car.
H308 EGS was first registered on the 20/09/1990 and is finished in Solid Black with a stylish grey cloth Recaro interior which remains virtually unmarked. Having had just three previous keepers, the current custodian has enjoyed this little bobby-dazzler since 2001 when it was given to him by his wife as a Birthday present! Since that time the car has had little usage and basically been mothballed until last year when it was treated to a thorough recommissioning with fresh fluids, brakes overhauled, cambelt replaced etc. It has just been fully detailed in readiness for the sale and now looks even better than it does in the photographs.
These cars are rarely found in a totally standard, unmolested condition and having covered just over 29,000 miles (atoc) this Series 2 RS Turbo appears very sensibly guided representing great value for money. Don’t miss a great opportunity to have this Fast Ford added to your collection.

1978 FORD ESCORT Mk2
Chassis No: SCAFUA63083PPH5

In the mid-1970s, Ford set about sharpening its act. Not in a marketing sense – because it had been impeccable since at least the end of the 1960’s – but visually. Just as the Capri received its straight-edged new styling, so did the Escort, to become the Mk II.
Codenamed Brenda during development, the 1975 Escort Mk II gained a number of new variations and trim options as well as new styling. Although little more than a facelift of the old Coke bottle car, the ‘75 Escort was considered new in the eyes of most of its customers and ended up sitting atop its sector in the UK sales charts during its production run. It did well in Europe, too, selling almost a million in five years.

Underneath the boxy body, everything was much the same as the Mk I model, but the addition of the 1,599cc ‘Kent’ engine at the top of the range created the appeal six-pack dial Escort 1.6 Ghia. The existing 1,098cc and 1,298cc engines continued as they were.
This highly original “time-warp” example has been in the custodianship of just one owner from new, who has cared for and maintained the car since first buying it in 1978. In the intervening years the Escort has been garaged and used regularly, clocking up 79,000 miles in its 42 years.

The Escort is offered with all UK taxes paid, and included are foreign title documents and a newspaper article featuring the owner with the car. Presented in excellent original order in all respects, this lovely straight unmodified example is a real treat to see, and will be a charming car to own for its lucky owner.
