By the mid-1950s, the Morris Minor was getting a bit long in the tooth and the BMC board decided they had better start planning its replacement.
However, much to their delight, the good old Moggie continued to fly out of the showrooms so they changed their plans and decided not to replace it, but to offer a more upmarket version which would be badged as a Wolseley and a Riley instead. Using the excellent Morris Minor floorpan, suspension and steering as a base, they fitted the larger 1,489cc B-Series engine and the 4-speed MG Magnette gearbox, clothing the lot in a compact and well-proportioned 4-door saloon body.
Both versions looked basically the same but had slightly different front end styling, the Wolseley getting a more traditional interior aimed at the more mature buyer, leaving the sportier, more powerful Riley to appeal to their younger clientele. The Wolseley was powered by a 43bhp single-carburettor engine, which gave it a top speed of nearly 80mph. Some 103,400 were made in total before production ended in 1965, although fewer than 800 are still road registered in Britain today.
If you have the good fortune to live or work in Tewkesbury – The Gateway To The Cotswolds – you may well be familiar with this Wolseley 1500, as it has been the vendor’s everyday car for the last eight years. His only car. That says volumes about the reliability of BMC’s diminutive gentleman’s saloon (the car, that is, not the gent).
This 1957 two-tone 1500 is not perfect but wears its age well. The paintwork is a little tired and there is some rust appearing but it is in better condition than most 61-year-olds (have you looked in the mirror recently?).
The engine and the back axle were rebuilt about two years ago but the vendor neglected to keep the receipts. The interior is original if a little tired although it should respond well to attention – new carpets, hide food and application of beeswax polish to the walnut dash and cappings will make all the difference.
This Wolseley is a stylish and sensible practical classic that, with a caring owner, could carry on being a daily driver. For even more pep, you could always drop an MGB engine in...

1972 DE TOMASO PANTERA
Registration Number: HMR 790K
Chassis Number: THPNMDO4240
Engine Number: 03213

De Tomaso's replacement for their successful Mangusta in 1971 was the avant-garde and stylish Pantera. Maintaining the best of the ingredients from the Mangusta, including the mid-mounted 300 horsepower, Ford 351ci, V8 Cleveland engine, five-speed ZF transaxle and dramatic styling, the Pantera also added monocoque construction into the mix, the first instance of De Tomaso using this construction technique. The Pantera was produced until 1991 with the last one being delivered to a customer in 1992. It was designed by American, Tom Tjaarda, making its public debut in Modena in March 1970 and was presented at the New York Motor Show a few weeks later. Power-assisted four-wheel disc brakes and rack and pinion steering were all standard equipment on the Pantera which could accelerate from 0-60mph in an eye-watering 5.5 seconds. The cars sold well with various derivatives emerging from the factory although it is the early cars that have a certain purity ensuring they remain the most attractive and thus collectable

This stunning lefthand drive example is presented in white with a black interior, manual gearbox and air conditioning. It has been in California all its life and has recently been imported into the UK when it was registered into the present owner's name for importation purposes.  It has been dry stored since importation as part of a small private collection. The mileage is believed to be genuine and it comes with a current V5 with a MoT test certificate expiring in September 2018. This absolutely superb example of one of the most famous of all Italian muscle cars must surely be one of the finest available today. Sure to turn heads both in looks and its glorious V8 soundtrack howling at high revs or indeed burbling at low speeds, simply awesome.
