1957 VOLKSWAGEN T2 PICK-UP/ RACE CAR TRANSPORTER

Offered for sale is a 1.6L 1957 Volkswagen T2 Pickup/race-car transporter manual that has been with the current owner for the last 2 years. Coming with a partial history file, this lot's condition scores 82 / 135.

Classic Car Auctions says:

This 1957 VW T2 pickup was imported to the UK from the USA in 1993, restored by the then owner over a period four years and was UK registered at the beginning of 1998 since when, according to the pile of MOT certificates (along with the tax discs) from the date of registration, it has completed a little over 8,000 miles in 17 years.
**Please note that the photos show a Lotus 11 on the back of the Pickup/ transporter, the Lotus 11 is not included in the sale, it is shown for example purposes only. Also just to make it perfectly clear for any potential purchaser that this Pick up/ transporter is ideally a single seater transporter and a large vehicle may not fit.**
This T2 pickup was purchased by the current owner in April 2013 and was the culmination of his long hunt to find a VW Split-screen pickup which was structurally sound, whilst having the slightly down at heel look he sought, to reflect the condition of a race transporter used by one of the single-seater racers who drove from race to race around Europe in the mid to late sixties. He then spent around £5,000 to have a custom conversion designed and carried out to turn the pickup into a set-up that would honour the period 60's transporters whilst being appreciably safer and more sophisticated in the way it was built and operated. A new Warrior electric winch is fitted, complete with wired and wireless remote controls for single handed loading.
A change of his racing plans means that someone else has the opportunity to use this transporter as it is intended.
The pickup is sure to be welcome in the Paddock at the Goodwood Revival and the many similar events now staged around the world, especially if it has a period single-seater on it!
The final decision to be made by the new owner will be whether to fit a full set of uprated, adjustable shock absorbers, or invest in adjustable air suspension, either just for the rear or all round.
The drivers of many scruffy looking, but valuable "Rat Look" VW's fit air suspension to drop their T2's almost to the floor, this pickup would use the same technology to level it!
The engine is a twin port 1,641cc, much more capable of travelling loaded than the original 1,100cc engine...
The interior is believed to be original and comes with a new but period tank tape repair to a split in the vinyl seat base!
A fully restored pickup, complete with Formula V was up for sale at over 200,000 Euros in 2013 and appears to have sold, so if someone wanted to drop the period look the current owner created and go for a "good as new" look, there is plenty of leeway. So many options and parts are available from the classic VW specialists that you can tailor this unique vehicle to suit your taste and pocket.
Attached in the lot listing as you scroll down are some 5 photos of similar VW T2 Pick up/ transporters in period.

Austrian-born Hans Ledwinka started his illustrious career as a trainee engineer, moving to nearby Vienna to continue his studies.
His first full-time employment was with Nessledorfer-Wagenbaum, manufacturers of railroad stock. Their first primitive car, the President, arrived as early as 1897 and Ledwinka was instrumental in developing their new models until leaving for Austrian competitor Steyr, where he worked alongside Ferdinand Porsche in 1917.
Four years later he had been coaxed back to the firm, this time as chief engineer, the company now calling itself Tatra, a name which it took from a nearby mountain range. New models quickly came and went, the seminal T77 arriving in 1933, it’s fabulous V8 air-cooled engine hiding at the rear.
The unrestricted autobahns spreading all over Germany needed powerful streamlined cars, Ledwinka’s answer being to employ Hungarian-born Paul Jaray, the designer of the teardrop Zeppelin airships, to pen a low-slung slippery body which dictated placing the engine in the tail. Early models even had a central driving position – eat your heart out McLaren.
Its replacement, the much improved T87 arrived in 1938, the big V8 Tatras being used exclusively by high ranking military and government officials or exported in a bid to obtain valuable foreign exchange.  The superb high-speed abilities of the V8 Tatras had not gone unnoticed in Germany. Adolf Hitler had enjoyed riding in them and made a point of meeting Ledwinka on a number of occasions and is reputed to have said “this is the car for my roads”. When Ferdinand Porsche was asked to design the KDF Volkswagen, he took what he needed from Ledwinka’s original ideas.
After the war, Ledwinka was accused of collaboration and jailed for five years. Tatra resumed production of the T87 in penny numbers while the emerging centrally planned economy decided what to do next. First priority was to introduce a car that could be mass-produced and was more in keeping with the government’s post-war theme of austerity.
The resulting new Tatraplan T600 had a monocoque body on a punt-like chassis, retaining the tubular backbone from the previous models. An air-cooled four-cylinder engine was chosen with overhead cams driven by chains.
Prototypes suffered from poor cooling and a weak heater (a bad thing in any Eastern Bloc country) and after much head-scratching the design team made several clandestine visits to Ledwinka’s prison cell for advice. Only too pleased to bring himself back in favour with the authorities, he suggested numerous changes, including increasing the engine size to 1,952cc, adding roof vents for better cooling and that distinctive rear fin for stability, all of which must have cheered him greatly. Not long after, he was released from prison and moved to Munich where he lived until the ripe old age of age of 89, driving his favourite Tatra T87 to the end.
The Tatraplan T600 was brilliant, its drag co-efficient of just .32 gave an autobahn maximum of well over 80mph, the short stoke engine coping with full-throttle use without complaint. The weight distribution of 45% front and 55% rear was the best it had been and 4,242 were made at the Tatra plant before production was moved, lock stock and barrel, to state-owned Skoda in 1951 who added a further 2,100 to the tally. Most of these Skoda built cars were exported, the car finding markets in pretty well every country around the world except the UK where it was never officially on sale.
This 1952 RHD example was acquired by a senior VW employee while working at the Skoda factory following their merger in 1990. He commissioned its restoration by a local Czechoslovakian expert, Klaus Stuken, in 1996, having yet more work carried out by Peter Bazzile from Cologne upon his return to Germany a year later.
Other than a modern Eberspacher petrol-powered heater under the rear seat (replacing the original unit which enabled the chauffeur to keep warm while his Communist bosses attended lengthy vodka-fuelled Politburo meetings), it is to standard specification.
Used for various retrospective rallies, it has a FIVA registration card (now expired) and comes with a factory parts book, workshop manual and a small box of useful parts. Currently registered in Ireland, its German papers are also on file. Described by the vendor as being “in lovely condition throughout”, it won ‘Best Post-war Saloon’ at Dublin’s Terenure classic car show last year.
Rare and fascinating, these iconic Tatras just ooze Cold War charisma and very seldom come onto the market, making the fact that we have two in our sale today all the more remarkable. This beautifully restored example looks extremely good value, especially when one considers the fancy prices now being achieved for its T77 and T87 ‘aerodynes’ predecessors.

It may interest bidders to note that this car can be seen in action, driving around the streets of Dublin, by viewing the online video https://vimeo.com/118545096

Ginetta was founded in Suffolk in 1958 by the Walklett family and quickly established a reputation for building specialist racing and sports cars with excellent performance and fine handling.
The Walkletts ran Ginetta until 1989 when it was sold off to a group of investors at which point they went into semi-retirement. However, you can’t keep a good engineering family down and they soon began work on developing another sports car, more road-focused this time and aimed squarely at the kind of driver who would typically choose a Lotus. It had a target weight of just 750kg and would cost around £30,000.
Called the Dare DZ, the mid-engined road rocket was launched in 1998 and featured futuristic-looking GRP bodywork like nothing else on the market. Available as either a convertible or fixed-head coupé with gull wing doors, the DZ was built around a composite chassis with moulded-in tubular steel framework. Suspension was independent all round by means of wishbones and coil spring dampers while there were vented disc brakes on all four wheels, gripped by four-pot alloy callipers at the front.
Power came from a 2.0-litre Ford Zetec, transversely mounted amidships, producing either 130bhp (normally aspirated) or 210bhp (turbocharged). Weighing only 700kg, the DZ had a power-to-weight ratio of 194bhp/tonne (un-blown) so its performance was electrifying.
The car offered here is the first of only ten DZs made, six of which were convertibles, and served as the factory's demonstrator, being displayed on its stand at the 1998 Motor Show in Birmingham and at the Brooke Kensington dealership in London. It was also used by Mark Walklett for his honeymoon to France, equipped with a roof rack for the trip. 'S279 TPU' has also appeared on television, driven by Vicki Butler-Henderson for the BBC's 'Top Gear' and has featured in magazines including 'Top Gear' and 'Speed & Style'.
It has had only three owners prior to the current vendor: the factory, Niall Poole and M Luck, and has covered less than 30,000 miles from new. In 2000 the factory removed the original turbocharger, and the now normally aspirated engine breathes via Weber fuel injection. Finished in silver with red leather interior, this rare and exclusive British sports car is offered with service history, V5C registration document and an MOT valid until September 2015. It also comes with a catalytic converter (not fitted) which would be required to pass the German TUV (MOT) test.
Thrilling to drive and stunning to behold, this incredibly rare machine, with superb provenance, is guaranteed to generate a huge amount of interest wherever it goes. It would make a fascinating addition to any collection.

Classic Car Auctions says:

This particular car is a series 1 model that was first registered in January 1981 and comes in the classic colour scheme of Embassy black with silver strips. 1974 SAAB 96 V4 - SILVERSTONE AUCTIONS 3rd of March 2015 - Silverstone Circuit

 3rd of March 2015 - Silverstone Circuit

1974 SAAB 96 V4

Offered for sale is a 1.5L 1974 Saab 96 V4 manual that has been with the current owner for the last year. Coming with a partial history file, this lot's condition scores an impressive 96 / 135.

Classic Car Auctions says:

A beautifully restored 1974 Saab 96 V4. Benefiting from a restoration, which includes we are told a new floor, new sills, new suspension, new tyres, new brakes, bumpers re chromed, new windscreen, new headlights, new radiator, new exhaust. Showing a unwarranted mileage of 58,876 miles.
The history of the V4 model is a most interesting one, the V4 was Saab's first 4-stroke engine, but it was actually made by Ford in Germany. It replaced the two strokes in the mid 1960s and carried on in production until 1980. Renowned as a rugged, torquey engine, it gained a reputation for reliability, longevity and performance, helped of course by Saab's rallying successes. 96 V4s won the RAC rally in 1968 and 1971, among many other international successes.
This particular 1974 Saab 96 V4 offered today has been painstakingly restored and is a credit to the vendor, the inside of the car on the face of it is in timewarp condition, with its orignal interior fitted. These cars are becoming more collectable, they have a lovely retro feel about them. Viewing of this car is highly recommended.

1972 OPEL GT - CLASSIC CAR AUCTIONS 3rd March 2015 Silverstone Circuit

"CROSSING THE BLOCK"
Featuring
 Auction Date: 3rd March 2015
Silverstone Circuit

1972 OPEL GT

Offered for sale is a 1.9L 1972 Opel GT 1.9 manual that has been with the current owner for the last year. Coming with a partial history file, this lot's condition scores an impressive 97 / 135.

Classic Car Auctions says:

A Conrero tribute Opel GT. Some six years of work and £21,000 have gone into this car we are told by the current vendor. He informs us that masses of work has been done, stripping the outer panels to bare metal and addressing any corrosion, this included replacing both front wings with genuine opel steel panels. Complete suspension and brake replacement, lots of work on the wiring.
The history of The Opel GT two-seat sports car in general is a most interesting one, The Opel GT two-seater sports car was first presented as a styling exercise in 1965 at the Paris and Frankfurt motor shows, and was introduced as a production model late in 1968 by Opel in Germany. It relied partly on components from the contemporary Opel Kadett and had a body made by French company Brissonneau & Lotz. The styling has been likened to the 1968 Chevrolet Corvette.
A handful of semi works sports racing cars which were prepared for Opel by Italian tuning specialists Conrero who had been tuning Alfa Romeo coupes and dominating their classes. GM asked them to give the Opel GT a try to add some sparkle to their range, their Opel GTs were raced in many European Group 4 GT races including the classic Targa Florio in Italy where in 1970 it won the GT2.0 class and came 9th overall.
This car offered for sale today is one of around 100 UK delivered cars of which there are only a handful left. All cars were produced in left hand drive only. This car was delivered to the first owner in November 1972 and has been restored over a ten year period.
We are told a Conrero tribute Opel GT was seen on Jay Leno's garage website and the restorer of this car fell in love with the look of the car. He managed to track down a set of the Conrero panels and set about the conversion. Bodywork has been professionally modified to allow clearance for the larger wheels and lower stance - 9x15 rears 8x15 fronts. Lowered all round using purpose made competition springs and Bilstein shock absorbers. Limited slip differential, but still on the original 4 speed box at present. Brakes have been upgraded with Carlton vented front discs, and Volvo 240 4 pot callipers rear disc conversion. Dual cylinder adjustable pedal box.stainless braided hoses. Tubular 4 branch exhaust manifold imported from US, mated to a custom made single box twin exit large bore exhaust . Twin 40 Weber DCOE's on correct short manifold with twin cable linkage. Piper Cam, Aldon distributor, Lumenition ignition, electric fuel pump. Alloy radiator with electric fan, 13 row oil cooler and remote filter . Bucket seats and four point harnesses, rear roll cage with removeable diagonal. Side and rear windows are polycarbonate. FIA cut out switch, battery box behind passenger seat, fire extinguisher, map light. Too many upgrades to list. Also comes with original manuals and a rolling road graph which shows (around 15bhp up on the standard output!)
The vendor informs us this absolutely stunning car always turns heads, and was invited to take part in Kop Hill Climb in 2014. It isn't perfect in his words and as with any classic car there will always be scope for improvement, he goes on to tell us it cost in the region of £21,000 to get it to this point.

1988 BMW M3 EVO II - SILVERSTONE AUCTIONS 22/02/15

"CROSSING THE BLOCK"
Featuring
S
The Race Retro Classic Car Sale takes place from midday on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd February 2015 at Stoneleigh Park near Coventry CV8 2LG

1988 BMW M3 EVO II
The E30 M3 was the first purpose built saloon produced by BMW as a racing homologation special by BMW's in-house Motorsport division. Introduced in 1986 as a road car, it dominated Touring Car racing throughout the World taking countless titles including the prestigious German, Australian and British titles, not to mention the World Touring Car Championship in 1987. To comply with DTM homologation rules, a minimum of 500 M3s had to be built and sold to the public that retained all of the aerodynamic features of the racing car.

The BMW M3 Evolution II was the closest road experience to a 'Group A' racing-car in 1988. The 'Evo II' had many differences compared to a normal specification M3. The engine itself received a slight increase in power thanks to a new camshaft, pistons and intake system. To lighten the car, the flywheel, bootlid, windows and bumpers were reduced in weight. Such modifications made the car quicker and more agile compared to the standard M3. Of the 17,000 M3s produced, only 500 Evo IIs left the factory, making this example one of the most desirable 1980s homologation specials in today's market.

Chassis number 2191493 was first sold new on 6th June 1988 by BMW Munich. In 1990, it was purchased by the second owner, who resided in Nice. The car remained on the Riviera until it was found by the third and current owner. The original service book shows a total of 18 stamps in the book and the original wallet is also in the file. The speedo was changed at 125,000 kms, which is fully documented in the history and the total mileage of the car is 147,000 kms or 91,000 miles.

Bills and receipts show numerous works have been carried out over the years and three years ago, this M3 was professionally re-sprayed in its original colour of Nogaro Silver. The quality of this work was clearly excellent as the bodywork is still in superb condition. Supplied with new tyres, a fresh MoT and January 2015 service by main dealer BMW Watford, this 80's icon is ready to be used and enjoyed by its next owner.

1968 FORD LOTUS CORTINA Mk II - SILVERSTONE AUCTIONS

"CROSSING THE BLOCK"
Featuring
Viewing: 20th February 2015 All Day
Auction: 21st February 2015 12:00 onwards
Auction (day 2): 22nd February 2015 12:00 onwards
Sale type: Classic Cars / Race Cars / Motorcycles / Automobilia
 -
1968 FORD LOTUS CORTINA Mk II
Following on from the enormous success of the Lotus Cortina MK1, Ford introduced the Lotus Cortina Mk2 in 1967, with the famous Lotus 1558cc twin cam engine now giving 109bhp. Externally, all the cars had a black front grill, 5.5J x 13 steel wheels and Lotus badges on both rear wings and by the rear number plate. The gearbox ratios remained to 2000E spec, but the final drive was lengthened to 3.77 to 1 from 3.9 to 1 and comfort and handling improvements were made with a larger cockpit, fuel tank and radial tyres.
Put simply, 'WGO 884G' drives how a Lotus Cortina MK2 should. The engine crackles and rasps with an engagingly happy note, it's fun and fast and very easy to drive. The steering is excellent and is loaded with feedback at all speeds. Push the brake pedal and the car stops as it should with no grabbing or pulling, while the gear change is easy with a solid mechanical feel through the gate.
We are informed by the vendor that this particular MK 2 Lotus has a 'CW' paint code, which makes it one of only five that was originally painted blue from the factory. The car underwent a complete restoration in the early '80s which was photographically evidenced. A subsequent refresh then took place in early 2000. Interestingly, the last 2 of the 4 previous owners were a father and son duo - both serving Royal Engineers - who, we are told, extensively maintained the car throughout their long-term ownership. Therefore, this Mk2 Lotus is in excellent overall mechanical condition and ironically, included in the sale, is a green silk parachute that was used to cover the car during storage, together with a superb history file going back to the 1970s demonstrating the cars originality.
The Recaro front seats currently fitted were a preference of the father and son team, however, the original genuine Lotus seats are in good condition and included in the sale. The provenance includes almost every MOT going back to 1971, various old tax discs back to 1982 and a bundle of receipts and invoices demonstrating continuous upkeep and maintenance of this car, plus a photographic album of the restoration works.
Offered with a mileometer reading of just under 5000 miles and an MOT until October 2015, this represents a rare opportunity to enter the ever-appreciating Lotus Cortina market for a very realistic price. A genuine Lotus with detailed provenance and nothing to do, apart from to drive and enjoy!

1971 FORD ESCORT MkI TWIN CAM - SILVERSTONE AUCTIONS

"CROSSING THE BLOCK"
Featuring
1971 FORD ESCORT MkI TWIN CAM

Registration: AKE 150J
Chassis Number: CK49K078568
Engine Number: EG 11158
Number of cylinders: 4
Year of Manufacture: 1971
No Reserve

From the start of the Escort range Ford had intended to produce sporting versions of its new model; the first of this special breed of Escort was the Lotus engined Twin-Cam. The Twin-Cam used the same 1558cc engine as the Lotus Cortina. This meant 110bhp and a top speed of 115mph. Externally there was little difference between the Escort Twin-Cam and its tamer sister, the Escort GT. A reinforced bodyshell with wider wheel arches and quarter bumpers hid the uprated suspension and front disc brakes were standard equipment. The  Escort Twin-Cam was conceived and developed by Ford's Boreham based competitions department during 1967 and unleashed on an unsuspecting public during January 1968; going on to achieve many international race and rally victories during its short production life. Ford entered their first event with the Escort, taking part in the new formula of motorsport, Rallycross and also entering at an event at Croft (still used today), the Escort Twin-Cam won 4 races out right. The Ford works team was practically unbeatable in the late 1960's and 1970's with, arguably, the Escort's greatest victory in the 1970 London to Mexico World Cup Rally. In total, just 883 Escort Twin-Cams were built before production ended to make way for the RS1600.
This original road-specification Escort Twin-Cam is a 1971 example finished in copper red with black interior. Built on the CKD Australian assembly line, it was sold to Auckland, New Zealand in March 1973. The New Zealand registration document shows changes of keepers and even a mileage log between '73 and the early 1990s. The car was at one time owned and raced by Richard McCathy in New Zealand. It was imported into the UK in 2002 and has remained in private collections since. Supplied with an excellent history file detailing expenditure over the years, the engine was fully rebuilt to race standards in 2011 with Gilmore drive, Edgel works head, lightened and balanced crankshaft and twin 45 Webber carburettors. When starting the engine it is immediately clear that this Escort means business, firing up with a reassuring but menacing bark.
The interior is finished to standard specification with auto sport master seats in very good condition. The bodywork is presented in good order but requires a paint touch up on the nearside rear wheel arch due to a chip. However, this car has clearly been loved over the years, as demonstrated by a number of email exchanges between former owners. Buyers are encouraged to contact the office for a full analysis of the vehicle. This lovely example of a fast-appreciating model is guided without reserve and presented in this rare colour combination, you will certainly stand out from the crowd of Ermine White Twin-Cam owners. It is supplied with a current MoT certificate, UK registration papers, Twin-Cam owner's handbook and some bills and receipts in the history file.

1962 FORD THAMES PICK-UP - BRIGHTWELLS Wednesday 4th March 2015 at noon

1962 FORD THAMES PICK-UP
 Ford Thames Pickup
Ford used the Thames badge to market its range of commercial vehicles. If it had a Thames written on the front, it was clear what that vehicle was intended to do.
By the mid ‘50s, the mainstay of the range, the Thames E83W was looking well past its sell by date. Virtually every component pre-dated World War 2, and the competition from Commer, Morris and General Motors with their clever Bedford CA were eating into sales in a big way.
Ford’s management looked to its US parent for inspiration, launching the 400E in 1957 with its clever forward-control layout, flexible low level chassis design at the rear and a rugged low compression version of the 1,703cc ohv four-cylinder engine from the Consul. It hit the spot straight away and survived until 1965 when the all-conquering Transit arrived and changed the world as we know it.
Body options grew and in 1963 the engine was given more power, an extra forward gear added to its rather limiting three-speed box while at the rear it gained a much tougher four-star diff. The basic van was sold as a Purchase Tax busting 12-seater mini-bus, a more comfortable 8 - 10-seat people carrier (even with a De Luxe option), a Dormobile camper conversion from Martin Walter in Folkstone and a handy pickup as on offer here.
This rare 1962 400E pickup was comprehensively restored about 10 years ago and has seen very little use since. We are advised that it is an easy starter and comes with a current V5, five old MOTs and a Ford Autobook manual. This smart looking handy truck is just the job to take to local shows, trips to the tip or would make an ideal promotional vehicle.
Bidders are advised that the vendor has a large quantity of spares, including an engine, axle and doors etc. which are available by separate negotiation.
