1931 AUSTIN 7 RM SPECIAL - HISTORICS AUCTIONS Saturday 25th September 2021 Ascot Racecourse, High Street, Ascot Berkshire SL5 7JX

OUR FEATURED AUCTION
HISTORICS AUCTIONS
Saturday 25th September 2021
Ascot Racecourse, High Street, Ascot

1931 AUSTIN 7 RM SPECIAL
Registration No: OG 8905
Chassis No: 132551
Chassis No: 132976
No Reserve

Because of Herbert Austin’s approach to construction, there is no such thing as a standard Austin 7 as, from 1923, they were built in large numbers and in many different body styles. It is not surprising that they were often also raced at both circuit and trials. From that day to this, they are still widely enjoyed both as standard and in modified form, as this charming example represents.

Originally a standard RM, this Austin was then stripped and the roof lowered by 2”. Whilst it was in bare metal, it was primed and repainted in its current Lily Pad green with black wings. Things begin to get interesting, however, when you open the bonnet. Pigsty Racing, Austin 7 specialists, have uprated the engine to ‘trials’ spec, with a forged Phoenix crankshaft, new crack-tested conrods and forged pistons. A modified oil system and gas flowed ports are fitted with specialist Pigsty valve springs, new guides and a cylinder head with a Pigsty trials cam-profile. The cylinder head is a modified Superloy unit with modified combustion chambers to increase flow and compression ratio. Power is then fed through a lightened and balanced flywheel and clutch assembly. New wheels by Tudor and tyres by Excelsior complete the package just in time for the Austin 7 centenary celebrations in July next year...

1952 Riley RMB ‘Harrian Special’

Lot No: 149
Registration No: KNP 967
Chassis No: RMB62S9448
Engine No: RMB2-203

  • One off special and well known to the Riley RM club
  • Extensively restored example
  • Sizeable history file

Despite producing some fine small saloons and sporting cars and carving out an enviable competition record for itself during the early 1930s, Riley had lost its battle to remain independent by the decade's end and became part of the Nuffield Organisation. Rileys of the immediate post-war years were, nevertheless, recognisable products of the 'old firm'. The 2.5 litre RMB engine produced 90bhp which was good for a top speed of around 95mph.

This handsome Riley began life as a sports saloon. According to Riley RM Club Records, Harry Wilton built the motor car to its present form in 1979 and it has been known to the club as the ‘Harrian Special’ ever since. The chassis was shortened by 17 inches, resulting in a purposeful looking two-seat roadster. Other features include two cutaway doors, a Kenlow fan and an oil cooler. Interestingly, this Riley was featured in the Autocar magazine in 1981 and later in the Riley RM Club magazine.

The previous vendor’s grandfather was Mr Harry Ferguson of Ferguson Tractor fame and the motor car has been enjoyed by his descendants through the years. Dry stored in the Isle of Wight since 1993, this stunning Riley special was acquired by our vendor in 2014 who set about a comprehensive restoration. The body was taken off the vehicle and the chassis was repaired and treated where necessary. Other work included restoration of the engine, body and various other upgrades. Used only occasionally by the current vendor, the Riley is in excellent order and is reported to run and drive very well indeed. Offered with a comprehensive file detailing its history, many bills and receipts of restoration, a photographic record of the restoration, the UK V5C registration document and old MoT records. We are sure this fantastic one-off special will prove to be huge amounts of fun now that summer is finally here.

c1950s DUNSMORE BOAT-TAIL SPECIAL - HISTORICS AUCTIONEERS Saturday 23rd November 2019 Mercedes Benz World Weybridge, Surrey

FEATURED AUCTION
HISTORICS AUCTIONEERS
Saturday 23rd November  2019
Mercedes Benz World
Weybridge, Surrey

c1950s DUNSMORE BOAT-TAIL SPECIAL
Lot Number151
Registration576 KHV
Chassis NumberZ11274
Engine Number3024
Odometer reading68,522 miles
EstimateNo Reserve

JT (Bill) Hines was the man behind the Dunsmore Specials. He began a one-man business repairing crashed vehicles in 1959, in sheds behind his bungalow at Stretton-on-Dunsmore in Warwickshire. Having a part-time helper who was an expert welder and metal fabricator, Bill Hines decided the time had come to form Dunsmore Motor Traction, the kind of small enterprise Mrs Thatcher liked and built Dunsmore Specials for any customers who wanted them. He had already made himself a two-seater special, using the floor-pan and 2.3-litre engine from a Vauxhall VX-4/90, cantilever back springs and a fabricated body with wooden mudguard blades. The result was a charming two-seater very much in the pre-war sporting idiom but without pretending to be a copy of any particular make. As for cost, a complete Dunsmore Special, trimmed and ‘MoTd’, would come out at about £7,500.
This particular example is a Special built in the 1950s, we are told, and is bodied as a two-seater sports Tourer with a boattail rear end. It is currently fitted with a VX4/90, 2.3 litres, four-cylinder engine with twin Stromberg carburettors which, as one can imagine, provides exciting performance for a car which weighs so little. It sounds fantastic as the side outlet exhaust is via a fantail which gives it that evocative sound more at home at the Brooklands Circuit! The car has been given the birthplate or chassis plate of a Lagonda M45 Rapide Saloon and is also registered as such on the V5 documentation. This Special would be fun to use on the road as well as a vintage entry to any Hillclimb or Sprint event.
