1914 Trumbull Model 15-B Cyclecar - BONHAMS AUCTIONS TUPELO AUTOMOBILE MUSEUM 1 Otis Boulevard Tupelo, Mississippi 38804 USA 26th - 27th April 2019

FEATURED AUCTION

1914 Trumbull Model 15-B Cyclecar
Chassis no. 733

Beginning as the American Cyclecar Co., the Trumbull as it became to be known once acquired by Isaac B. Trumbull, was the first fully equipped Light Car for America. Early examples came equipped with friction disc transmissions and final drive by chain while later cars, like our example here in Tupelo, came with 3-speed manuals and shaft drive. Had more cyclecars been this well made and well equipped, the company may have been less encouraged to export models abroad. It is believed that 20 Trumbull vehicles were on board the Lusitania the afternoon of May the 7th when the ship met a member of the German navy. Unfortunately, Mr Trumbull, his 20 examples vehicles, and his company went down with the ship. The seldom seen Connecticut-built cyclecar lasted in production less than 2 years with a yield of no more than 2000, surely here is an opportunity to acquire a unique car of amazing provenance.

1924 BSA MODEL L - BRIGHTWELLS Classic Car Sale Bicester Heritage, Buckingham Road Bicester, Oxfordshire OX26 5HA WEDNESDAY 10th APRIL 2019

FEATURED AUCTION

BRIGHTWELLS
Classic Car Sale
Bicester Heritage, Buckingham Road
Bicester, Oxfordshire OX26 5HA
WEDNESDAY 10th APRIL 2019

1924 BSA MODEL L
Registration No: SV 8337
Chassis No: D5523
Engine No: F7590
Estimate:

The BSA Model L was produced by the Birmingham Small Arms Company (BSA) in 1923 and 1924. Its 349cc single-cylinder engine had a bore and stroke of 72mm x 85.5mm and drive was transmitted via a constant-mesh three speed, hand change, gearbox to a chain final drive.
Braking was achieved via friction pads which operated on dummy rims on both front and rear wheels, ingeniously joined to the wheels via their own set of spokes.
Engine lubrication was achieved by mechanical pump but also included the facility for the rider to adjust oil flow depending upon riding conditions. This was achieved by an adjusting mechanism mounted on the side of the tank which included a sight glass through which flow-rate could be observed.
The result was a very effective and reliable machine that history records as achieving immediate success in the Scottish Six Days Trial and Swedish International trials of 1923.
This particular example, frame number D5523, was built in 1924. The motorcycle has been with the current owner for almost two years forming part of his vintage collection. He purchased it from a friend and enthusiast who was responsible for the extensive restoration in 2000. The bike was regularly used with MOTs present from 2001 through to 2012. We are told that regular use continued until 2017 but that the acetylene lamps proved too much of a challenge for MOT purposes. During this time the bike was a regular entrant at the VMCC Banbury Run and Stanford Hall events.

This beautiful example of a flat tank BSA vintage motorcycle is presented in exceptional condition and is accompanied by eleven MOTs since restoration and a copy of the original lubrication chart.

1925 DODGE MODEL 4 ROADSTER SPECIAL
Registration No:BF4970
Chassis No: 7A852070700451000
Engine No: A536620

The Dodge Brothers made their money initially by producing engines for, and investing in, Henry Ford’s fledgling Ford Motor Company. They had a reputation for sound engineering and their own cars were strong, simple, and well made. This is one of them.
The car started life as a saloon in 1925 and found its way to New Zealand where it was eventually turned into the open-topped two-seat Speedster you see before you. Andrew Bremner imported the car in 2008 and there is plenty of correspondence on file between Mr Bremner and the overseas owner, including some details of the car’s condition and requirements.
Mr Bremner encountered various problems but eventually got the car running well, only to suffer a catastrophic engine failure involving con-rods and crankcase ventilation. Another engine was sourced, problems overcome and the whole plot was back in action in no time. Sounds simple when you say it quickly, but the accompanying correspondence and invoices are a little more sobering...
A regular at the Kop Hill Climb, the Dodge had its last MOT in 2013 (minor advisories) since when it has become MOT exempt. It may need some fettling but nothing a handy mechanic cannot solve, and it can be seen running in the video link on our website. The prospective buyer is advised to examine the extensive history file (9lbs, by weight!) that comes with the car to make a little more sense of what they are buying.
This is heroic old car that may not be to everyone’s taste but will enable the new owner to take part in a wide range of historic events, including hill climbs, trials and sprints. Concours d’Èlegance are best avoided, though.
