Much has been written about the Austin Seven, the 747cc side valve 4 cylinder engine, the wheelbase of 6’3” (6’9” from late 1931) and the overall length of just 10’6” usually. The ‘jewels’ in the model range include the Ruby, the Pearl and as offered here, the Opal.

Designed as a tourer for two persons, the Opal turns heads and creates a throng of enthusiasts when parked, perhaps because of its relative rarity. As with all Sevens, it is light and easy to drive and has a modest performance with little thirst. Repairs tend to be simple and spare parts plentiful, due to the excellent support from the Owner’s Club. Even if a breakdown should occur, there is a sporting chance that a roadside fix will be possible, as against the average ‘modern’ where there is little point in even opening the bonnet. The fuel for a Seven flows sometimes by gravity from a scuttle mounted tank to the carburettor, although later models have a simple pump. Turning on the ignition will produce a spark, which at some stage can be made to appear in the correct place, so that a journey can be resumed quite easily.

DPK 160 is part of a private collection and appears to be generally good, with tidy bodywork and interior. The hood is a little tired but for the amount of use likely, is quite adequate. Mechanically all looks present and correct but as no battery is fitted, we can only recommend that a period of re-commissioning is carried out once the motor car is safely home. Please note that side screens are not supplied. 

The motor car is offered with the V5C registration certificate, an older V5 document, showing the Austin was acquired by the current family in November 1997, plus various invoices and old MOT test certificates. The motor car is currently on SORN.

Launched in 1922, the Austin Seven was an unprecedented success that not only saved Austin but wiped out most other small cars and cyclecars of the early 1920s. Simply yet brilliantly engineered, it quite literally put Britain on the road.
Built around an A-frame leaf-sprung chassis and powered by a 17bhp 747cc four-cylinder side valve engine, it came in numerous different body styles and remained in production until 1939, going through a bewildering number of variants along the way encompassing saloons, tourers and out-and-out racers.
Introduced in 1934, the Ruby was an addition to the existing saloon range and featured a longer bonnet with hinged vents at the side, cowled radiator and down-swept tail with enclosed spare wheel. Mechanically similar to preceding models, production of the traditional chrome radiator models soon gave way to the ‘new look’ Ruby, Pearl and Opal models.
The vendor of this delightfully original and early Ruby acquired the car recently from long-term ownership. It has not done a lot for many years as you can see, although was said to be running last year.
Fitted with a Superalloy downdraft inlet manifold and a set of tubular extractors, a past owner has clearly tried to improve its performance.
In remarkably solid condition, there would be a list of jobs to do in order to get the car back on the road roughly as is, which being an Austin Seven would be easy and cheap to do. The bodywork is good enough to qualify for ‘oily rag’ status given a little TLC, although its new owner will decide whether to conserve or restore.
It comes with a current V5C which shows its number BBH 553 is still transferable, an old MOT from 1961 from a garage in Somerset and a tax disc from 1959….was this when it was last used in anger? Who knows!

Introduced in 1922, as Austin realised its previous one-model policy was not going to work, the Seven, along with the larger 12, saved Austin and made them into one of the main forces in the British motor industry. It nearly didn’t happen though - Austin’s background consisted almost entirely of large cars, and the proposed new model met with such resistance from the board that Herbert Austin, whose idea the car was, had to personally finance much of the project. This decision was vindicated as, after a disappointing first year in which only 2,500 7s were sold, the car went on to sell nearly 300,000 in a 17-year production run. Over 30 different body styles were offered during its life, but the 747cc engine remained throughout. This chummy is said to be in good condition throughout. Nothing is known of the car\'s early history up to 1959 and it was presumed laid up until 1962. From then until 2011 the car had at least seven different owners. The car starts and runs well and it will certainly give a great deal of pleasure to its new owner. It is offered here with a V5c, an old buff logbook, a selection of old MOTs, various bills and correspondence.

This charming ‘baby’ Austin has an interesting history: at the start of war in 1939, the Chummy was exchanged by its owner for a reproduction antique. The motor car was completely dismantled, wrapped in newspaper and hid away for fifty years. In the early 1990s, it was rediscovered and became the subject of a comprehensive, photographic restoration, which included an engine rebuild by the Austin Seven Service in North Yorkshire. Apart from the work to the engine, the main restoration was carried out by Derek Bird of Uppingham and we are told that since this rebuild was completed, the Chummy has been used very sparingly, just for local outings and shows.

The fine example remains in excellent condition. The dynamo has recently been rebuilt and the hood has been renewed. A full tonneau cover is included in the sale.

The history folder includes a schedule of restoration costs, invoices, technical data, a parts list, the photograph album, the original handbook and a photocopy, an RF60 registration book, the V5 document, the V5C registration certificate and its replacement.
