1928 AUSTIN 12/4 HEAVY PICK-UP - H&H AUCTIONS WEDNESDAy 20th MARCH 2019 Imperial War Museum, Duxford Cambridgeshire, CB22 4QR

FEATURED AUCTION

H&H AUCTIONS
WEDNESDAy 20th MARCH 2019
Imperial War Museum, Duxford
Cambridgeshire, CB22 4QR

1928 AUSTIN 12/4 HEAVY PICK-UP
Registration No:EOA 822
Chassis No:54906
MOT: Exempt

- Reputedly built in 1928 and used as internal transport at Austin Longbridge until 1938

- Fully restored and described as excellent overall

This truly glorious-looking vintage pickup is believed to have been constructed from unmatched parts by Longbridge apprentices in 1928 - eg the roller bearing engine hailed from 1924, the chassis from 1927 and the fuel tank from 1928, while the headlights are different diameters. It was one of a fleet of six such vehicles used to transport goods around the factory, which it did until 1938, when Leonard Lord required the trucks to be sold off and apprentice Keith Webb purchased 'EOA 822' for the princely sum of £5, including number plates and tax. During the war, it was seconded for the delivery of light goods and groceries around the village of Birdsall, Leeds. Ownership then passed to Harold Clark and then his nephew Norman, who registered it to 'James Clark & Sons, Undertakers & Joiners', of Skipton. It subsequently passed through several more hands until discovered in a very poor state by Richard Marsden in 1994, and it was his brother-in-law, John Gardiner, who lovingly restored it to its current as-good-as-new condition.

The refurbishment included the reconditioning of all bodywork and running gear, not least the engine that was completely overhauled. The ash rear body frame was renewed, as were the clutch, radiator matrix, exhaust system, fuel tank, wiring and rear lamps, while indicators were added for safety. The venerable Austin is finished in Grey over Black and rides on Black artillery wheels. The airy fabric-topped cab is a mix of Blue upholstery and polished wood for the facia, headlining and rear bulkhead. Nice little touches around the vehicle include Austin Motor Co. Ltd. sill plates, running board-mounted fuel can, pockets in the doors, and a bulkhead-mounted stowage area behind the passenger. The vendor regards 'EOA 822' as being in 'excellent' overall condition

FEATURED AUCTION

BRIGHTWELLS AUCTIONS

Leominster Classic Motoring Auction Centre
Easters Court, Leominster, HR6 0DE

Lot No. 29
Registration Date: 1928
Make & Model: Austin 12 Doctor's Coupe
Colour: Green/Black
Registration Number: YV 2703
Chassis No.: 5TS9630 44949
Engine size:1,861 cc
Engine No. 45326L
Documents: V5C; 12 old MOTs; invoices; service sheets; notes
Estimate: £7,500 - £9,500

Austin’s post-WW1 business plan was not an immediate success, based as it was on a one model policy. Although their 20hp was beautifully made, it was expensive to build and was rather pricey as a consequence.
Their response was to produce a smaller version: the 12/4. This model was much more successful (remaining in production until 1940) and kept the company afloat until the arrival of the cheap and cheerful Austin 7 in 1924 which really did save the day.
Dating from 1928, this 12/4 started life as a Mulliner four-door saloon. It must have had an eventful life, as it served duty as a pick-up truck for many years, a body-style it carried until the 1980s. Bills from 1980 onwards, mainly from Arthur Archers of Dunmow, show regular maintenance and a full engine rebuild including white metal.
Some time after, it was treated to its third body, this time in the form of a nicely executed fabric-bodied two-door Doctor's Coupe. A service sheet from 2008 onwards, when it came into the hands of its previous owner, details the maintenance and mileage accumulation until it was purchased by the vendor in 2014.
Much work has been carried out since 2008, including replacement fabric, the addition of dumb-irons to the roof, tidying of the upholstery, a rewire, rehanging the doors and a further engine overhaul in 2011, which included replumbing the oil feeds to the five main bearings.
There are 12 old MOTs on file, some invoices and notes and we are advised that it has proved extremely reliable and has frequently covered between 200 and 300 miles in a day with typical Austin dependability.
Although it had not run for some time when it arrived on site, it started easily and drove around the Brightwells site very nicely indeed, with notably light steering. 'Invest in an Austin' today!

1928 AUSTIN SEVEN VAN - HISTORICS AUCTIONS THE WINTER SALE Mercedes Benz World Brooklands Dr, Weybridge KT13 0SL Saturday 24th November 2018

FEATURED AUCTION

HISTORICS AUCTIONS
THE WINTER SALE
Mercedes Benz World

Saturday 24th November 2018

1928 AUSTIN SEVEN VAN
Registration #: VW 3905
Chassis #: A58973
Engine #: M125399

The Austin 7 was produced from 1922 through to 1939 and nicknamed the 'Baby Austin'. It was one of the most popular cars ever produced and sold equally well abroad. It wiped out most other British small cars and cyclecars of the early 1920's and its effect on the British market was similar to that of the Model T Ford in the USA. Prior to the Austin 7 though, larger cars were the order of the day but the forward thinking of Sir Herbert Austin felt a smaller car would be more popular. Austin put a large amount of his own money into the design and patented many of its innovations. In return for the investment, he was paid a royalty of two guineas on every car sold. Nearly 2,500 cars were made in the first year of production (1923), not as many as hoped, but within a few years the 'big car in miniature' had transformed the fortunes of the Austin Motor Co. and by 1939, when production finally ended, over 290,000 cars and vans had been manufactured.
Built in 1928, this charming Austin with green bodywork and contrasting black wings looks delightful from every angle. The simple interior boasts a Smiths speedometer, amperes gauge and black seats. The car is sign written 'Cycle master Ltd' and even displays a tax disc valid until 30th September 1928! This extremely popularly configured Austin 7 with its body mounted headlights is certainly a rare model, perfect for the VSCC and a fantastic entry to pre-war motoring.
