FEATURED AUCTION

November Sale
Bicester Heritage, Bicester

1962 AC GREYHOUND BRISTOL
Registration no. 240 YPJ
Chassis no. BEF2566
*Restored by specialist 20 years ago and re-painted this year

*Bristol engine rebuilt
*Extensive history

Odometer Reading: 61,000
MOT Expiry: 21/08/2020

While the pre-Cobra AC Ace remains overshadowed by its more powerful successor, another AC – one from the same period with true grand touring capabilities – also brought together two great British car-making names in one attractive package. Step forward the AC Greyhound, whose manufacturer looked to Bristol to supply engines. The result was a rapid, well-engineered not to say good-looking offering. Restored around 20 years ago by noted Bristol specialist Spencer Lane-Jones (over 570 hours!), this UK-supplied Greyhound has a comprehensive history and has received much attention more recently. It is fitted with the Bristol 2.2-litre inline six, the engine which experts say best suits the Greyhound's character, and is coupled to a Bristol (overdrive) gearbox. Following on from the restoration, more recently (2019) it has been re-painted in Aston Martin Dunhill Silver, a shade that complements the body's lines, while the lack of bumpers lends a more purposeful air and evoking images of when these models were used in rallies. Ideally suiting the silver bodywork is a red interior, which is in wonderfully, lightly patinated order with no signs of modification, and remains eminently usable. At the wooden dashboard is especially appealing with its full complement of instruments, below which sits a period radio. At the heart of any Greyhound is the engine, and this car was re-built to almost 100S specification (which translates into around 125bhp) and is said to be very good. Running gear too is in good order, other than the brakes which could benefit from some attention. Adding to this car's appeal is its immense history, which runs to two box files and includes the original 1960 buff logbook, as well as photographs and notes taken during the restoration work.

FEATURED AUCTION

Sunday 3rd November 2019

1968 BRISTOL 410
Registration No: 9888 PJ
Chassis No: 410-7453
Colour: Silver Over Blue

Bristol has always been an exclusive marque. They have appealed to enthusiasts and connoisseurs who appreciate engineering excellence and that quintessential understated English styling. The 410 is the fourth in the series of the Chrysler V8 engined models, with only 82 of the bespoke Grand Tourers being manufactured between 1968/69. Performance is what Mr Crook would describe as adequate, with a 250 bhp V8 driving through an automatic Torqueflite gearbox affording effortless 100mph plus cruising performance for four in luxury. This particular 410 is finished in dark blue with a silver roof. The interior is trimmed in blue/grey leather with contrasting dark blue carpets and re-veneered dashboard. Our vendor acquired the Bristol in 2007 and in 2008 installed an LPG conversion (receipt on file with a certificate for £1,800) which our vendor says has made the Bristol much more economical to run without any detrimental effect on performance. There is a large history file accompanying the car with historical and more recent receipts for maintenance, noteworthy works carried out include an engine rebuild in 2007 by Queensberry Road Garage for £5,511.05, repairs to inner and outer sills among other works for £4,219.74 in February 2017, amongst numerous other bills. The Bristol is described as a usable car with a certain charm which could be improved with by the next custodian. Subject to an insurance write off in 1989, MOT until September 2020 (although exempt) and tax-exempt

1948 BRISTOL 400 - H&H AUCTIONEERS Imperial War Museum sale IWM Duxford Wednesday 16th October 2019

FEATURED AUCTION

H&H AUCTIONEERS
Imperial War Museum sale
IWM Duxford
Wednesday 16th October 2019

1948 BRISTOL 400
Registration No:VXS 248
Chassis No:4001367
MOT:Exempt

- Sold new by Pusey garage of Wiltshire

- Recent re-trim

- Understood to have previously resided in Italy

Further info:

With the support of the War Reparations Board, the rights to manufacture the BMW 326, 327 and 328 and their famed six-cylinder engine were secured by Bristol in 1946. Place a pre-war BMW 327 alongside Bristol's first offering, the 400, and the ancestry is self-evident, but there were many differences. The decision to make it a four-seater saw it based on the longer chassis of the 326. The aircraft-grade Bristol body was more streamlined than that of the 327, while Bristol developed the already impressive 328 engine into one of the finest 2-litre units of the period, which powered not only all Bristol models until 1961, but various sports and racing cars from AC, Arnolt, Cooper, Frazer Nash, Lister, Lotus and Tojeiro. The 400's interior trim was an unmistakably British blend of leather and wood. The more contemporary-looking 401 and 403 that followed were styled by Carrozzeria Touring of Milan.

`VXS 248' vacated the Bristol production line on July 6, 1948, and was sold new to a Mr J Livingstone by Pusey Garage of Wiltshire. It was apparently domiciled in Italy by some stage in the 1950s, but little is then known of its history until, back in the UK, it was taken in part payment for a Bentley in 2010. It was then held in storage until 2016, during which year it was re-registered and returned to the road. The Bristol is understood to have been repainted in Red while in Italy and recently treated to a re-trim here in the UK, during which the seats and door cards were professionally finished in a blend of Oxblood and Cream hide. An interesting car that the vendor informs us `drives well and is absolutely comfortable in modern traffic' and which, courtesy of the model's sporting history, should be eligible for the Mille Miglia Retrospective.

1949 BRISTOL 400 - BRIGHTWELLS AUCTIONS Leominster Auction Centre Easters Court, Leominster HR6 0DE Wednesday 4th September 2019

FEATURED AUCTION
BRIGHTWELLS AUCTIONS
Leominster Auction Centre
 Easters Court, Leominster HR6 0DE
Wednesday 4th September 2019

1949 BRISTOL 400
Registration Number KXS 451
Chassis No. 400/1/660
Engine size 1,997 cc
Engine No. 85A/1411
Documents
V5C; dating letter; number plate allocation letter
Estimate £35,000 - £38,000

Transported – sorry: exported to Australia in 1949, this Bristol 400 made it back to this country fifty years later and was first registered here KXS 451 in February 2019. The climate down under has done wonders for the car and it appears in remarkably sound condition.
The car was previously painted metallic blue but received a much more subdued colour scheme (black!) some time ago; the white wings are a more recent addition. The interior has been refurbished to a very high standard (even the boot) and is extremely smart with new leather upholstery, headlining, renovated woodwork and re-plated brightwork.
The brakes have been recently refurbished and the majority of the electrical system has been re-wired and the car started and ran well for our photographic session.
One of Britain’s finest post-war cars, the 400 established Bristol’s reputation as a builder of elegant, high quality, sporting cars. Fewer than 500 cars were produced between 1947 and 1950 and are much sort after today, with prices rising steadily in recent years.
Eligible for a number of prestigious events including the Mille Miglia, this car is offered for sale with a very reasonable estimate and a great deal of potential.
