2017 BMW AC Schnitzer ACL25 - Silverstone Auctions Silverstone Circuit (The Wing Building, NN12 8TN) Saturday 31st July and Sunday 1st August

Welcome back to Classic Chatter and our look at what is coming to auction in the UK.
It's been a difficult time for everyone over the last 18 months but the future looks better and we all hope normality is just around the corner.

OUR FEATURED AUCTION

Silverstone Auctions
Silverstone Circuit (The Wing Building, NN12 8TN)
Saturday 31st July and Sunday 1st August

2017 BMW AC Schnitzer ACL25
Lot No  411
Registration No: LJ66 JZE
Chassis No: WBA2G31000V640102
Engine No: 13539779
Body Colour: Satin Finish Military Green

  • No 1 of a limited production run of just 30 based on BMW's M240i
  • Built by AC Schnitzer/BMW to celebrate their 30th Anniversary
  • This is the 400bhp Essen Motor Show press car
  • Presented in satin-finish Military Green and distinguished by a 10-piece ACL2S wide bodykit, carbon fibre front spoiler, lower front splitter, carbon fibre racing wing with Gurney flap, roof spoiler, quad sports exhaust with black ceramic tail pipes, RS adjustable suspension, and bespoke 19 forged-alloy wheels
  • Fabulous interior featuring colour-coded panels, AC Schnitzer steering wheel, alloy pedal set, Recaro Sportster CS heated front seats, all retrimmed in Racing Green and black leather and displaying the ACL2S branding.
  • Purchased directly from the stand at Essen before being first registered in the UK on 01/02/2019 with just one recorded keeper since. Present mileage just 7,253km
  • With an original build cost in the region of €120,000, this 'Weapons Grade' head-turner is on offer at a fraction of its original cost. Simply stunning.

In 2017, AC Schnitzer celebrated its 30th Anniversary and to mark the occasion produced a limited-edition based on a left-hand-drive BMW M240i with appropriately just 30 examples leaving the factory. Launched at The Geneva Motor Show that same year, it was particularly well received and was, in fact, awarded Sportscar of the Year 2017 in the small and compact car class.

Christened the ACL 2S, there is hardly an inch of the original M240i that hasnt been touched by the AC Schnitzer 'Magic Wand'. The 3-litre, twin-turbo, inline-six now generates 400bhp compared to the, not exactly underpowered, 340bhp of the 240i and torque is similarly increased from 500 to 600Nm. The impressive upgrades include a 10-piece ACL2S wide body kit, carbon fibre front spoiler, lower front splitter, carbon fibre racing wing with Gurney strip, roof spoiler, quad sports exhaust with black ceramic tail pipes, and RS adjustable suspension. The car is painted a distinctive matte/satin-finish Military Green and sits on 19 forged-alloy wheels finished in Black and Gold, the latter colour picking up the ACL 2S branding around the car. The interior features colour coded panels some of which are additional to the ACL2S spec, AC Schnitzer sculpted steering wheel, alloy pedal set, Recaro Sportster CS heated front seats, all retrimmed in Racing Green and black leather with Lime Green stitching.

We understand that this particular vehicle was Number 1 of the 30 cars and was purchased directly from the stand at Essen before being first registered in the UK on 01/02/2019 with just one recorded keeper since. The current indicated mileage is just 7,253km.

This little 'Military Grade' German ' rocket ship is in superb condition and with its distinctive looks and dramatic hue will turn heads anywhere. The ACL 2S is unlikely to be repeated ever again and all thirty have been sold or are in private collections so this is a real opportunity for the serious collector or BMW aficionado.

Brooklands Museum, Weybridge, Surrey

2017 CATERHAM SEVEN
Registration No: LJ17 DKP
Chassis No: SDKRCF3Z217573424

One of 60 limited edition cars launched at 2016 the Goodwood Revival

Just 349 miles
One lady owner

The Caterham Seven Sprint is the latest in a long and incredibly varied line of models and was launched at the Goodwood Revival in September 2017. The Sprint is the company’s celebration of their 60th anniversary and, hand built at the factory by Caterham, only sixty were produced for the whole of the world with the entire allocation quickly snapped up by enthusiasts. It was available in a limited range of heritage hues for the body and scarlet red Muirhead Scottish leather for the interior seats. With the style of the car reminiscent of the original Lotus 7 models, the engine is the same 80hp three-cylinder turbo-charged 660cc Suzuki engine as fitted to Caterham’s Seven 160, along with its five-speed gearbox, and the drivability and performance are said to be exciting.
This particular example is number 23 of 60 factory built cars, registered by Caterham on 14th July and delivered in July 2017. The bodywork is painted in Camberwick Green complemented by cream steel wheels with chrome hubcaps, whilst the interior has stunning Muirhead Scottish Leather adjustable seats in scarlet red embossed with ‘CATERHAM’ in the backrest. The interior also features a bespoke Moto-Lita wooden rimmed sport steering wheel with engraved aluminium centre embossed with ‘Seven Sprint’. This car comes with every available optional extra including lowered floors, sidescreen armrests, tonneau cover, matching leather seat extender for the smaller driver and dust cover for garage storage with embroidered Caterham logo. A real collector's item, this example comes complete with leather key pouch and two leather key rings all engraved with ‘Caterham Seven Sprint’. With little over delivery mileage, the car is as new and is sure to be very popular for those looking for not only a fabulous driver’s car but also an appreciating asset.

MERCEDES BENZ WORLD, WEYBRIDGE SURREY

1983 BRISTOL BRIGAND
Registration No - DLN 280Y
Chassis No - 603S308505026
Engine No - 783609799

Launched in 1976, Bristol's Type 603 models represented the company's first major redesign since the 406 of the late '50s. Gone was the classic three-box profile of the past, replaced by a considerably more streamlined shape. Among the many benefits was an increase in head, leg and shoulder room - more than for any Bristol before it. The newcomer was initially offered with a 5.9 litre, V8 or a mildly more frugal 5.2 litre unit. By the time the S2 version was introduced, however, the smaller engine was dropped. Coincident changes included the headlamp clusters being housed in a new grille. 1982 saw the advent of the S3 variant and the adoption, for the first time, of names from Bristol's glorious aviation history - the Britannia moniker was attributed to the standard model in the range and the Brigand label attached to the quicker version equipped with Rotomaster turbocharger. Easily distinguished from its sibling by the power bulge over the turbocharger, the Brigand was capable of a genuine 150mph. With little more than minor changes to their appearance, these two models remained in production until 1994, when they were replaced by the Blenheim.

This 1983 righthand drive Brigand is presented in Caribbean Blue with a nicely patinated grey leather interior. Whilst in the present vendor’s ownership, various works have been carried out including a full respray and all the steel wheels have been re-furbished and shod with Pirelli 4000 tyres. The carpets were renewed as was the headlining and the back parcel shelf was recovered to match the interior. All the leather was reconnolised in the original grey and eight leather panels were replaced where they were worn, split or dirty. New seals were fitted to both the front and rear screens when they went back in after respray. The vendor believes that this car could be the Brigand development car which would make it interesting in Bristol circles but this is not proven; certainly the wheels are non-standard for a Brigand. This is a great example of this truly British bulldog sports car in lovely condition.

FOOTNOTES

  • The Mini was the standout motoring icon of the 1960s, so it was only to be expected that that era's defining popular music act – The Beatles – would all own examples of Alec Issigonis' motoring masterpiece. But while it is relatively easy to carry your guitar around in a Mini, a set of drums is another matter entirely, and it is said that Ringo stipulated that his must be able to accommodate a drum kit, making it different from those purchased for the other members of the 'Fab Four'. The solution to the lack-of-space/accessibility problem was a hatchback conversion, which coachbuilder Harold Radford was offering as an option on its up-market Mini de Ville GT, introduced in October 1965.
Radford was not the only firm offering modified and upgraded Minis at this time. Another was Hooper & Co, widely acknowledged as Britain's finest coachbuilder until parent company BSA ended its body-building activities at the end of 1959 and reconstituted it as Hooper (Motor Services) Ltd, which acted as a sales and service company. Nevertheless, Hooper seems to have 'kept its hand in' by modifying cars for a select band of customers, including actor Peter Sellers who is known to have commissioned a special Mini from them. 'LLO 836D' carries Radford and Hooper badges, suggesting input from both companies.
Like all of The Beatles' Minis, 'LLO 836D' was purchased new by band manager Brian Epstein's company, to which it was first registered in May 1966. Its registration number is in the same sequence as that of Paul McCartney's Aston Martin DB6 ('LLO 840D'), which presumably was purchased at the same time. Registration passed to Richard Starkey (Ringo's actual name) on 15th June 1967, and he kept the car until it was sold in December 1968. Nothing is known of its subsequent history until 1977, when the ex-Starr Mini was purchased by the current owner's father.
While in the latter's ownership, 'LLO 836D' appeared on the BBC Television programme 'Blue Peter' in February 1984, being described as the 'Rolls-Royce of Minis', and in March of that same year went on display at the 'Beatle City' exhibition in Liverpool. In August 1987, the Mini went on display in Dallas, Texas when the 'Beatle City' exhibition transferred to the USA, and following its return home was restored by Naylor Brothers in 1990/1991. In 1998, Ringo's Mini won the coveted Cartier 'Style et Luxe' concours award at the Goodwood 'Festival of Speed', and three years later – in 2001 – was featured in BBC TV's flagship motoring show, 'Top Gear'. Motoring magazines have listed the car's many unique features as:

    Bonnet vents
    Extended wheelarches
    Manx alloy wheels
    De-seamed bodyshell
    Waso fuel filler caps
Bespoke window frames and quarter lights
    Webasto sunroof
    Hooper and Radford badges
    Triple ancillary gauges
    Rev counter
    Cigar lighter
MotoLita steering wheel on Mark II column
    Internal bonnet release
    Walnut dashboard and door cappings
    Folding rear seat
    Door handles
    Electric windows
    Etched Sundym glass (side windows)
    Huntmaster reclining seats
    Driving lamps (individually switchable)
    Benolite grille
    Morris 1100 indicators
    Door warning lights
    VW 'Beetle' rear lights
    CibiƩ headlights in Innocenti rims

The car is expected to be freshly MoT'd prior to sale, and we are advised that some additional re-commissioning of the electrics will be required. Finished in two-tone Rolls-Royce Regal Red/silver-grey, this fabulous piece of Beatles-related motoring history is offered with sundry restoration invoices, a V5 Registration Certificate, and the original logbook signed by both Brian Epstein and Richard Starkey (Ringo Starr).
