The Sovereign was the ultimate iteration of Jaguar's run of models that began with the MKI - it boasted superior suspension to the MKII and an additional level of opulence when compared to the 420. The automatic transmission example on offer is a seemingly very original one. First registered in September 1969, it has remained within the same family ownership since 1971, still wears its original registration number, and has completed just 70,808 miles in its 50 years on the road. This righthand drive home market car was supplied new by Henlys of Chester and is being sold complete with: its original sales documentation and guarantee card, Daimler owner's wallet and operating manual, pair of keys, plus an MOT valid into September 2020. The Sovereign is finished in Blue teamed with a Grey leather interior, and the specification includes a period Radiomobile radio and pair of rectangular fog lamps. The 1968 Jaguar XJ Series I made its debut just prior to the London Motor Show on September 26 of 1968. It was advertised as Jaguar’s best saloon car that embodied sportiness, comfort, performance and style. The final version presented to the world featured a base model with a 2.8-litre engine with a lower price that was minus the leather trim. The 4.2 engine as a straight six with twin carbs, was moderately priced for its class and generated 245bhp, accelerating from 0-60 in 9 seconds with a top speed of 124mph. It was available with a four-speed manual gearbox or an automatic. It won “Car of the Year” in Britain, but was not considered for the European distinction overall. These models cleared production lines and didn’t spend much time on showroom floors as their popularity soared.

In October 1969 Jaguar introduced the Daimler variants of the XJ6 models – Daimler Sovereign, Daimler Double Six, Daimler Double Six Vanden Plas – which were essentially the same car with a Daimler grille and higher equipment levels. The appeal of the Series 1 to enthusiasts is down to its purity of design and its relative rarity. It was also built before British Leyland began influencing Jaguar’s activities so product quality is considered to be higher than later variants.

This beautiful example has enjoyed much restoration work over recent years, supported by many bills for works completed, in addition to a photographic record of the restoration and trimming work. The Daimler comes from low ownership over the years and is offered with the original book pack containing the Daimler Passport to Service book and various owner’s manuals. Also in the file is a detailed valuation report, UK V5 document and several older MoT certificates dating back to the first owner.

Finished in Turquoise with an Autumn Leaf leather interior, this both stunning and rare variant of the XJ6 is ready to be enjoyed by its next enthusiastic owner.

A new Series I XJ6-based Sovereign was introduced in October 1969. Once again, it was externally virtually identical to its Jaguar source car, with the exception of its fluted grille and Daimler badging. Internally there were trim variations, such as the removal of the wood door cappings fitted to the Jaguar. This Sovereign model was offered with either the 2.8-litre or the 4.2-litre version of the XK engine. The Daimler Sovereign name remained in use for the Series II version of the XJ6, with a raised front bumper and shallower grille; an extended wheelbase version was introduced, which eventually became the standard model. HUB 590N has a factory sunroof and our vendor tells us that it \' drives well\'. Within the history file, there are details about the very few custodians of the car and paperwork supporting the low mileage of 53,000. It is offered with a V5c, several invoices and the passport detailing the original owner and various handbooks etc. This is an excellent example of a powerful and highly useable classic, that provides effortless motoring at its best.

Auctioneers Notes Probate Sale

The vendor who has sadly passed away, purchased this Daimler Sovereign 4.2 Van den Plas in November ’96.  The previous owner acquired her May ’84.  She comes with the original soft leather bound book pack, containing SIII Maintenance Book, Hand Book, Daimler Service Centres Chart and Service Book which contains 8 stamps.  The last stamp was the 7.11.96  mileage 64,404.  In the service history file you will find old V5’s, correspondence and invoices from the garage he purchased her from in November ’96.

Incidentally, you have old tax discs and an MOT’s starting from ’98 mileage 64,577 to 2/17 mileage 66,387 plus you have the ‘GOV.UK.MOT HISTORY’ and all in all it confirms that the mileage is correct. And also there are some recent invoices from August 2000 mileage 64,951 to February ’15 mileage 66,292.  These invoices are from a local garage, Links Garage Parkstone Ltd and so this lovely car has not been used for a number of years and will require gentle re-commissioning before use.  May be viewed by appointment.
