1939 Packard Six Sedan
Registration No:MUI 939
Chassis No:12843252
MOT:Exempt

- Restored in the late 1990s

- New radiator

- Kenlowe fan

Further info:

Packard was renowned as a manufacturer of premier luxury automobiles, and by the late `30s the majority of its sales were still of sumptuous eight-cylinder-engined cars to wealthy customers. However, keen to expand and simultaneously take account of the impending recession, in 1937 it reintroduced a six-cylinder model to its range for the first time in nine years. The 1939 Ivory-coloured example now offered is a lefthand drive Sedan Tourer that has benefited from an extensive restoration around 1998. Since being acquired by the vendor it's been treated to a new radiator, dynamo, 16" Kenlowe fan and electric fuel pump, while the rest of the fuel system has been given a thorough overhaul. He presently grades the straight-six engine as `excellent', the Mottled Brown interior trim as `very good', and the Sedan bodywork and three-speed manual transmission as `good'. The Packard boasts its original heater and radio, both of which are still fully operational.

By the end of the 1920s, Packard had arguably become the last word in American automotive fashion outselling rival Cadillac by three to one. Responsible for lifting Packard out of the post-WW1 depression, the 'Six' range was current between 1921 and 1928. Engineered to the same exacting standards as its larger brethren, the newcomer was based around a beautifully wrought ladder-frame chassis equipped with leaf-sprung suspension and four-wheel drum brakes. Powered by a 4-Litre (later 4.7-Litre) straight-six engine allied to four-speed manual transmission, the 'Six' could be had with a range of elegant factory coachwork. Though, with the plentiful power and torque on tap from its famously durable L-head powerplant, it also boasted a surprising turn of speed.

An older restoration that has been in the current family ownership since 1989, 'DS 8058' is described by the vendor as being in 'good' (engine, gearbox, bodywork, paintwork, electrical equipment) or 'very good' (interior trim) condition. Luxuriously appointed, the cabin features Red leather upholstery up front and Red velour cloth to the rear plus a six-person drinks cabinet. Said to be in 'good running order', this handsome right-hand drive Packard Six cuts a considerable dash for a ninety-six-year-old!

THE PACKARD 180

1939 Marked the final year of the twelve cylinder Packard and 1940 saw the up rated straight eight take over as Packard's top power plant. As the eight had nearly rivaled the twelve in terms of horsepower the eight was a bit lighter and a much simpler engine to build and maintain. Now rated at 160 hp it proved more than ample to power even the heaviest custom models.

Packards top model was now called the 180 and was introduced with fresh styling in 1940. A successful revamp of the classic Packard front end gave the cars a more modern appearance while keeping true to Packards iconic radiator design. The chassis had steadily been advanced over the years and were a truly modern offering. Though quite similar to the 160 model the long wheelbase 180 was reserved for Packards custom coachwork offerings.

THE MOTORCAR OFFERED

Purchased in January of 1989 alongside the Lincoln Zephyr also found in the museum, this generously proportioned Packard exists with touches from many decades. Its bright red exterior and graceful lines are very much of the 1940s while the interior has been festooned in a wild leopard skin patterned upholstery- presumably in the 1980s. The remainder of the car appears in a rather worn condition and is due for some cosmetic and mechanical restoration.

Nevertheless, Packards of this era are noted for their fine road manors. The smooth-running engine and effortless gear box make the car a pleasure to drive. The excellent chassis and engine combine for a surprisingly quiet and smooth driving experience. Once restored it will surely be cherished by its next caretaker.

1939 PACKARD SIX 4-Door TOURING SALOON - HISTORICS AUCTIONS Saturday 2nd March 2019 Ascot Racecourse, High St, Ascot SL5 7JX

FEATURED AUCTION

HISTORICS AUCTIONS
Saturday 2nd March 2019
Ascot Racecourse, High St, Ascot SL5 7JX

1939 PACKARD SIX 4-Door TOURING SALOON
Registration No: BPM 335
Chassis No: B18241
Estimate; £23,000 - £29,000

  • The original UK supplied right-hand drive example
  • Matching numbers
  • Recent full engine rebuild
Entering the 1930s, Packard attempted to beat the stock market crash and subsequent Great Depression by manufacturing ever more opulent and expensive cars than it had prior to October 1929. As an independent producer, Packard did not have the luxury of a larger corporate structure absorbing its losses. However, Packard did have a better cash position than other independent luxury marques. Packard also had one other advantage that some other luxury makers did not, a single production line. By maintaining a single line and interchangeability between models, Packard was able to keep its costs down.

To address the Great Depression, Packard started producing more affordable cars in the medium price range in 1935, the company introduced its first car under $1000, the 120. Sales more than tripled that year and doubled again in 1936. To produce the 120 and Six, Packard built and equipped an entirely separate factory. By 1936, Packard's labour force was divided nearly evenly between the high priced 'Senior' lines (Twelve, Super Eight, and Eight) and the medium priced 'Junior' models, although more than ten times more Juniors were produced than Seniors. 120 models were built using thoroughly modern mass production techniques while the Senior Packards used a great deal more hand labour and traditional craftsmanship.

This handsome Packard, quite rightly, turns heads anywhere it goes and is finished in deep blue with contrasting grey cloth interior. This UK righthand drive example was originally registered on 31st March 1939 and the current owner believes it was restored some five years ago. Our vendor is the owner of two Packards and he purchased this example in September 2017 after a chance meeting with a fellow Packard enthusiast. Since then, he has had the engine fully rebuilt, as any Packard owner will know these fabulous cars should run almost silently. Not being entirely happy with the car, he commissioned his mechanic, who himself owns three Packards, to undertake the work to an exacting standard. This included a new radiator and Kenlow fan, new coil, a stainless steel exhaust and rebuilt front brakes all of which has taken place less than 200 miles ago and subsequently when sitting in the car with the engine running, you wouldn't necessarily know if the car is running.

Within the history file is an invoice for the recent rebuild and works, coupled to this are V5 registration documents denoting the owners since 1978 and MoT test certificates dating back to 1973. Our vendor states that the car drives every bit as fabulously as it looks and is selling with a heavy heart. A genuine alternative to period a Rolls-Royce or Bentley, this Packard oozes grandeur and grace with viewing highly recommended
