1978 LANCIA HPE
Registration No 3228 XA 92

The Lancia Beta HPE was a three-door sporting estate or shooting-brake introduced in March 1975. HPE stood for High Performance Estate, and then later High Performance Executive. This model had Berlina's longer wheelbase floorpan combined with the coupé's front end and doors. The HPE was also styled in house at Lancia by Castagno's team, with Castagnero as styling consultant. At launch it came with either 1600 or 1800 twin-cam engines, these being replaced in November of the same year by new 1.6 and 2.0 units. In 1978, like other Beta models automatic transmission became available along with power steering. It was renamed the Lancia HPE (without the Beta) from 1979 and in autumn 1981 gained the option of a fuel injected 2.0 engine. In 1984 a 2.0VX supercharged version became available. Like all other cars in the Beta range the HPE was discontinued in 1984. Number built: 71,258.
Very rare Lancia High Performance Estate in excellent overall condition having been stored in a Parisian underground heated garage. Recently recommissioned and ready for use or light restoration.
Two owners, the last from 1992.
NOVA registered.

BARONS CLASSIC CAR AUCTIONS
SATURDAY 28th OCTOBER
SANDOWN PARK, ESHER, SURREY KT10 9AJ

1968 SUBARU 360

The Subaru 360 is a rear-engined, two-door city car manufactured and marketed from 1958 to 1971 by Subaru. As the company's first automobile, production reached 392,000 over its 12-year model run.
Noted for its small overall size, 1,000 lb curb weight, monocoque construction, swing axle rear suspension, fiberglass roof panel, and rear-hinged doors, the inexpensive car was designed in response to the Japanese government's light car or Kei car regulations and its proposal for a larger "national car," both intended to help motorize the post WWII Japanese population. The 360's overall size and engine capacity complied with Japan's Kei car regulations.

Nicknamed the "ladybug" in Japan, and ultimately superseded by R-2, the 360 was one of Japan's most popular cars and was available in a single generation in two-door, station wagon, "convertible" (coupe with roll-back fabric roof) and sport model variants.10,000 were sold in the United States, imported by Malcolm Bricklin — advertised as "Cheap and Ugly.
The nameplate 360 derived from its tax-limited engine displacement: 356 cc.
The 360 featured an air-cooled, 2-stroke inline 2-cylinder 356 cc engine mounted transversely at the rear, and was introduced March 3, 1958
The RHD example offered here is described by the vendor as a good car all round and to drive really well with the 4-speed manual gearbox. The mileage of 35000 is believed to be correct. The car comes with a new MOT.

1965 BMC MINI MOKE
The Mini Moke is a vehicle based on the Mini, designed for BMC by Sir Alec Issigonis and John Sheppard. The name comes from "Mini", the car with which the Moke shares many parts, and "Moke", which is a dialect term for a donkey. The Moke has been marketed under various names including Austin Mini Moke, Morris Mini Moke and Leyland Moke.

The initial design was a prototype for a light military vehicle in the style of the American Jeep, but its small wheels and low ground clearance made it impractical as an off-road vehicle. It was subsequently offered in a civilian version as a low-cost, easily maintained utility vehicle. The Moke finally achieved success as a beach buggy, becoming a popular cult vehicle in the Algarve, Seychelles, Australia, the United States and many tropical resorts in the Caribbean. The original Moke used identical engine, transmission and suspension parts from the Mini Van. The first Mokes were only built at BMC's Longbridge, Birmingham plant. Just over 50,000 Mokes were produced in Birmingham, Australia, and Portugal between 1964 and 1993 when production of the Moke ended.

The vendor states that this early Moke is in outstanding condition. It is in its original red colour and was delivered to the Rhodesian Fire Service, where it was hardly used. It has been totally restored and is absolutely immaculate.

1958 Mercedes-Benz 300d 'Adenauer' Limousine BONHAMS 28/03/15

"LOT OF THE DAY"
FROM

 1958 Mercedes-Benz 300d 'Adenauer' Limousine
Chassis no. 189.010-A8500918 Engine no. 189.981-8500204

Formerly used by Todor Zhivkov, First Secretary of the Bulgarian Communist Party

This imposing Mercedes-Benz 300d limousine was formerly used by Todor Zhivkov, General Secretary of the Bulgarian Communist Party and later also Bulgaria's Prime Minister. Appointed in 1954, Zhivkov ruled Bulgaria until his resignation in 1989, his 35 years at the top making him the longest-serving leader of any Eastern Bloc nation and one of the longest-ruling non-royal leaders ever.

One of Mercedes-Benz's first all-new designs of the post-war era, the 300 saloon debuted in 1951 and would succeed in re-establishing the Stuttgart firm in the front rank of prestige motor manufacturers, marking as it did a return to the marque's tradition of building high-performance luxury automobiles of the finest quality.

The 300's cross-braced, oval-tube chassis featured independent suspension all round, four-wheel drum brakes, hypoid bevel final drive, dynamically balanced wheels and remote electrical control of the rear suspension ride height. Initially developing 115bhp, the 3.0-litre, overhead-camshaft, six-cylinder engine – also used in the 300 SL sports car - gained the latter's fuel injection in the restyled 300d of 1957. Other improvements included larger brakes (servo-assisted from 1954), optional power steering (on the 300d) and the adoption of three-speed automatic transmission as standard on the latter.

Custom built by Mercedes-Benz's most experienced craftsmen, the 300 was luxuriously appointed and trimmed with materials of the highest quality. Fast and elegant, it was one of very few contemporary vehicles capable of carrying six passengers in comfort at sustained high speeds.

It was the car of choice among West German government officials, and throughout Europe and the USA was widely favoured by businessmen, financiers and politicians. Indeed, 'Adenauer' became the 300 saloon/limousine's unofficial model name, after German Chancellor Dr Konrad Adenauer, its most famous customer. One of the world's most exclusive cars, the 300 sedan cost $6,980 in the USA, making it more expensive than any contemporary Cadillac, including the limited-edition Fleetwood models. Between 1957 and 1962 when production ceased, Mercedes-Benz made 3,077 300d saloons, this car being one of 1,165 that left the factory in 1958.

Ordered specially for Todor Zhivkov and reputedly his favourite vehicle, this 300d went to Russia after the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989 and was securely stored by the KGB (Soviet secret service) in Moscow. Subsequently it was bought by a Russian collector and former KGB member. The car is finished in black with beige leather upholstery, while other noteworthy features include a Becker radio, mechanical clock, wood-veneer interior embellishment and spare wheel/luggage carrier. Partially restored in 2014 by marque specialist Günther Jelinek of Nürnberg, the Adenauer is described by the vendor as in generally excellent cosmetic and mechanical condition. Accompanying documentation consists of restoration invoices, Classic Data appraisal, technical inspection, Russian registration papers and is full EU duties paid.

1978 ALFA ROMEO ALFASUD - BARONS AUCTION 23-24th February 2015

1978 ALFA ROMEO ALFASUD

The Alfa Sud, an "all new" model for Alfa Romeo, was launched in 1972. The Alfasud came only as a four door saloon, however there was a choice of engines which included 1186cc, 1286cc (1977 onwards), 1350cc and 1490cc (from 1978).
The Alfasud developed quite a loyal following and had excellent handling characteristics. Between 1971-1983 over 500,000 Alfasud's were produced, the model was eventually replaced by the Alfa Romeo 33.
It was considered one of Alfa Romeo's most successful models and soon gained a shorter identity among fans as the for  ’Sud.
It was built at a new factory at Pomigliano d'Arco in southern Italy, hence the car's name, Alfa Sud (Alfa South) and developed by Austrian Rudolf Hruschka.

Launched at the Turin Motor Show the car was immediately praised for its styling (by Giorgetto Giugiaro of ItalDesign) and handling. It featured a 1,186 cc boxer engine.

The first production Alfasuds were four-door saloons, with a sporty two-door TI (Turismo Internazionale, or Touring International) model following at the end of 1973.

In 1974, Alfa Romeo launched a more luxurious model the Alfasud SE. The SE was replaced by the 'L' (Lusso) model in 1975. The Lusso model was produced until 1976, by then it was replaced with the new '5M' model, the first four-door Alfasud with a 5 speed gearbox. A three-door station wagon model called the Giardinetta was introduced for the 1975 model year.
Offered here is a 1978 saloon, which has just two registered keepers from the same family and has covered a mere 36,000 miles from new. Originally supplied by Grange Motors of Brentwood, the cars comes complete with virtually all of its receipts, original instruction booklet and service coupons, previous MoT certificates and extensive service history via receipts. The car was treated with Waxoyal when new, which has kept the rust at bay.
The car was owned by a farther and son before being placed into dry storage in 2006, where it remained until it was rescued and recommissioned in late 2014. With a new battery, fresh petrol and clean oil, it started right up. The car has since benefited from recommissioning, a new centre exhaust, new water pump and a service. When the car was MoT tested, it failed on a few minor items, which have now been addressed and there are no advisories on the new MoT.
Described as very usable and sound, this 36,000 mile Alfa Sud is a rare survivor with excellent history

1961 MERCEDES BENZ 220SE COUPE - BARONS AUCTIONS

"CROSSING THE BLOCK"
Featuring: Barons Auctions
1961 MERCEDES BENZ 220 SE COUPE
Mercedes unveiled its new six cylinder 220 models in 1959 introducing the second generation of saloons and coupés to use the 220 model designation. Like the previous 220 the new cars had a 2195cc six cylinder engine with choice of either S or SE specifications. The more expensive SE Coupé and Cabriolet models featured fuel injection and 1962 disc brakes.
The 220 Coupé shared its two door body with the convertible Cabriolet. The elegant roof line featured a large "wrap-round" rear screen and pillar-less doors. Unlike the smaller engined "Fintail" models the 220 came with "stacked" headlamps either side of the traditional Mercedes grille.
The model remained in production until 1965.
Offered here is a 1961 example of the desirable SE Coupé, which is believed to be one of only 50 right hand drive specimens equipped with the manual transmission. This makes the motor car an excellent basis for historic rallying but also offers the maximum performance from the 2.2 litre, six cylinder engine in every day use.
Finished in white with tan leather interior, the motor car has been in the vendor's care for 21 years and is described as being in very sound, usable condition but in need of some light restoration.
These Coupés are becoming harder to find in sound condition, especially in RHD configuration, and even rarer with the manual transmission.
