1953 Kaiser Manhatten Sedan - RICHARD EDMONDS AUCTIONEERS Sale of Vintage & Classic Cars, Motorcycles Saturday 19th October 2019

FEATURED AUCTION

RICHARD EDMONDS
AUCTIONEERS
Sale of Vintage & Classic Cars, Motorcycles
Saturday 19th October 2019
Event field next to Allington Farmshop,
just off the A420, SN14 6L

1953 Kaiser Manhatten Sedan
Reg. no. VSL 392

Chassis no. 016312
Engine no. 2144317
Kaiser-Frazer was one of very few American car manufacturers to start up after the Second World War and achieve reasonable success, competing in a market dominated by the ‘big three’ Detroit companies. Starting in 1947, when Joseph W Frazer and Henry J Kaiser acquired the lease on the Willow Run plant in Michigan, a former B-24 bomber factory and at the time the largest building in the world, a range of interesting, well-designed cars emerged from that cavernous edifice, badged as both Kaisers and Frazers. Although the ambitious early plan for a front-wheel-drive car was dropped, nevertheless the new 1947 cars took the American public by storm, as they were among the first all-new post-war designs on sale. In 1951, Frazer left and that brand was discontinued. In 1953, Kaiser took over Willy-Overland, and in 1955 passenger car production ceased and the company, later renamed Kaiser-Jeep, focused on off-road and military vehicles.
The Manhattan was originally a name applied to Frazer-branded vehicles, where it represented the very top of the line. After the discontinuation of the Frazer name, the Manhattan became a Kaiser, where, as before, it was at the top of the line-up. Power came from a 3.7-litre straight-six, which developed 118bhp. Kaiser always made a big effort to be bold with their styling – they had to, to stand out as a small fish in a very big pond – and the Manhattan was no exception. Bright colour schemes were the norm, and the interiors were among the finest of any American car of the period, with high-quality materials and a unique ‘bamboo-effect’ vinyl on the dash. In addition to the styling, contemporary reports praised the roominess of the interior, the smooth ride and handling and the surprising frugality of the engine.
This 1953 Manhattan, a rare car to find in its home country, let alone in the UK, is in superb condition, having been completely restored inside and out in 2010. The engine and four-speed automatic gearbox have both been rebuilt, and in its striking colour scheme with a wonderful interior, it’s a car that’s sure to create interest wherever it goes, both for its appearance and its rarity. Fully UK registered following its importation, it comes with a V5c and a large file of relevant information.

Extra details and estimates:

£22,000 - 24,000

1953 FIAT TOPOLINO GIARDINIERA

Better equipped than many cars twice its size, the FIAT 500 – soon nicknamed ‘Topolino’ (mouse) – brought a degree of refinement hitherto unknown to small cars when launched in 1936. Lockheed hydraulic brakes, independent front suspension and 12-volt electrics were all features while an engine mounted ahead of the front axle helped maximise cabin space for the two occupants. The 569cc, four-cylinder, side-valve motor produced a modest 13bhp but as the Topolino weighed little more than half a ton it could nevertheless manage a respectable 50mph-plus under favourable conditions. For most buyers though, the frugal (up-to-50mpg) fuel consumption would have been the major attraction. Introduced in 1946, the 500B featured a more powerful
(16.5bhp) overhead-valve engine that would be carried over to the Topolino’s final incarnation – the restyled 500C of 1949, which was the first FIAT model to offer a heating/de-misting system as standard.
At the same time as the 500B was introduced, a Giardiniera station wagon (also known as the Belvedere) was added to the range, offering four-seat accommodation as well as increased luggage space. Equipped with the superior overhead-valve engine, these Giardiniera station wagons were genuine 60mph cars.

Estimate: £4,000 – £6,000
€4,500 – €6,500
$5,000 – $7,000

1953 AUSTIN A35 VAN - HISTORICS AUCTIONEERS Saturday 21st September 2019 Mercedes Benz World Weybridge, Surrey

FEATURED AUCTION
HISTORICS AUCTIONEERS
Saturday 21st September 2019
Mercedes Benz World
Weybridge, Surrey

1953 AUSTIN A35 VAN
Registration No: VSY 307
Chassis No: 22865
NO RESERVE

1951 saw Austin's reply to the Morris Minor, the A30 was launched at the Motor Show of that year.
A more cautious design than the Minor, the A30 was nevertheless Austin's first unitary construction car and the first to be powered by the famous A-Series engine. The A30's selling price undercut the Minor's by £10, thanks in part to such cost-cutting features as external door hinges, a solitary rear light, sliding windows and rear brakes operated by a single hydraulic cylinder via a mechanical linkage. A two-door model joined the four-door original in 1953, with van and estate versions following in 1954. The model was updated in 1956 with a wider rear window, remote gear lever and the 948cc engine, becoming the A35. Saloon production ceased on the Mini's arrival in August 1959, though the particularly popular A35 van would live on until 1968.

This A35 van was originally registered on 17th July 1963 and was purchased by the vendor in September 2012 for use as a promotional tool for their business. At the time of the purchase, the interior was a little tired and was fully re-trimmed in leather, the carpets replaced and the load area boarded and trimmed. Supervan, as the van is affectionately called, was subject to a full restoration circa 1999 by a renowned A35 specialist, which was documented and the subject of a club magazine article. Whilst being restored the engine and gearbox were replaced for 1098cc MG Midget units along with front disk brakes, anti roll bar, twin carburettors and a higher ration rear differential making for a much more useable vehicle able to keep up with modern traffic. Supplied with a V5C registration document, a handbook and some previous MoT test certificates together with a collection of invoices. This Austin A35 van is an ideal way to market a business or enjoy uncomplicated classic car motoring that is both tax and MoT exempt.
