The Velocette LE – ‘Little Engine’ – was a common sight for well over 20 years on the roads of Britain and are most often associated with the police – over 50 forces used them during their 23-year production run from 1948. In police use, the bikes became known as ‘Noddy Bikes’ – not due to any link to the well-known children’s book character, but rather due to the fact that the junior police riders who usually rode them were required to nod to their superiors when passing – a salute would have been the norm, but this was not encouraged as it involved removing a hand from the handlebars. Thus, nodding police officers chugging along on this distinctive bike became a common sight.

This 200cc LE is very genuine and appears to be complete; although starting has not been attempted, it turns over freely. There aren’t any documents.

The 1961 introduction of the Dominator 650SS marked a new development for Norton’s famed ‘featherbed’ frame, which had been developed in 1950 for racing machines and later found its way into road bikes. Widely considered the finest-handling frame design of its era, it was now enhanced with the top rails closer together at the front of the saddle, and hence became known as the ‘slimline featherbed’. The new model was powered by a 650cc twin-carburettor engine, providing excellent performance and leading the 650SS to be widely proclaimed as ‘the best of the Dommies’, therefore achieving Norton’s aim of being a match for the Triumph Bonneville of the time.

This Dominator is a lovely example in unrestored condition. It comes with assorted documents including an old logbook and a V5c.

In 1952 Triumph re-entered the market for lightweight commuter machines with the introduction of the 149cc Terrier. A simple, compact, unit-construction four-stroke with four-speed gearbox, the Terrier was joined in 1954 by an enlarged version - the 200cc Tiger Cub - that offered 60mph-plus performance and 100mpg. This Terrier has been restored by a well-known Tiger Cub/Terrier specialist and we are told that it is still in good condition. It is offered with a V5c.
**This bike is 1955, not 1956 as catalogued.**
