This immaculate 1974 Volkswagen Type 2, bay-window, single cab, pick-up truck started life in South Africa although, prior to that, had been built in Brazil. Thousands of Type 2s were partly built under license in Brazil only to be taken apart and shipped in kit-form to South Africa where they were re-assembled, finished and sold. It seems a strange arrangement, however, presumably there must have been some financial benefit to both countries. South African built Type 2s, particularly those that remained in the country for many years, are popular worldwide as restoration projects, the dry climate resulting in much less chassis and floorpan deterioration
This particular pick-up was imported to the UK from South Africa in 2015 still wearing its original Green and White and was purchased, in January 2016, by Buckinghamshire-based, independent classic Porsche specialists, Export 56. Established for over 25 years they have become one of the UK's leading practitioners in the restoration and preservation of classic Porsches. They were in the market for a small pick-up truck as loading engines, body sections etc is so much easier onto a flatbed and, specialising in early air-cooled German cars, a Volkswagen was the preferred choice.

Although the little truck was in great condition, showing little sign of rust and no accident damage, it would regularly be seen by customers and represent the company, so it was important that it looked the part and effectively became a shop window for their restoration skills. In July 2016 the pick up underwent a major renovation that took around 12 months. The body was fully stripped and some metalwork was replaced but the truck was basically very sound. The engine, brakes, suspension and running gear were fully rebuilt/restored using existing parts where possible and new/old stock when not. It was fitted with a brand new interior, steering wheel, door frames and handles. All the lighting, external trim, and detail parts were new also as it was important that the company's renowned attention to detail was evident in their little truck. A new weatherproof top and frame were sourced and the flatbed was 'rubberised'. The vehicle is currently powered by a 2-litre Type 4 engine which produces a healthy 70bhp. When it was ready, it was carefully prepared, painted in Dark Green and White, and finished in Export56/Porsche livery.

When your business is restoring old German bodywork and then painting it to a showroom standard, then your company vehicles need to reflect this level of quality and this little pick-up certainly does that. Overall it's in spectacular condition and we understand, drives "perfectly".

This is a wonderful period motorsport support vehicle or an ideal business promotion tool turning heads wherever it goes.
