Footnotes

  • The unique 'beach car' offered here was built by Carrozzeria Savio of Turin and displayed at the 1965 Turin Motor Show, appearing on the cover of Auto Italiana magazine's edition covering the event (copy on file). Although one of Italy's lesser-known coachbuilders, Carrozzeria Savio could trace its origins back as far as 1919 when it was founded in Turin by brothers Antonio and Guiseppe Savio. Commencing with a contract from Itala, Savio went on to build bodies for all of Italy's major motor manufacturers, concentrating on FIAT chassis after WW2. In 1965 Savio launched the Moke-like Jungla recreational vehicle, based on the FIAT 600 (and later 850), the success of which almost certainly killed off the beach car project. As far as is known, the car offered here is the sole example built.

Little is know of this car's ownership history apart from the fact that the previous owner was Count Vittorio 'Gughi' Zanon di Valgiurata, an influential figure in the international motor sport who helped further the careers of drivers including Ayrton Senna, Michele Alboretto, and Ronnie Peterson.

In 2008 the Savio was restored in Italy by a Torinese specialist. Works carried out included overhauling the brakes, refurbishing the interior woodwork, re-chroming the brightwork, restoring the soft-top, and fitting new tyres and a new battery. The car is currently registered in Italy and according to the vendor is in very good condition.

The original dune buggy – the ‘Meyers Manx’ was built in 1964 by Bruce Meyers using the ubiquitous Volkswagen Beetle chassis.
In more recent times, one of the best-known exponents of this conversion is Flatlands Engineering, the Manx Meyers USA authorised builder based in the UK - famous for producing the Buggy in the phones4U TV advertisement.
The current owner approached them in 2007 and commissioned the build of one of their short wheelbase buggies. Produced on a 1972 VW Beetle and retaining the original floorplan and chassis, the project was completed in 2008 and has not changed hands since.
Like the buggy in the TV advertisement, the body was supplied by East Coast Buggies, the owner choosing the Prowler specification in gold-flecked apple red finish. The Prowler is slightly wider at the wheel arches and higher at the rear when compared to the standard Meyers Manx. This allows the easy conversion to wider wheels and provides the space to allow fitment of the upgraded twin port engine.
A brand new twin-port 1,600cc unit was sourced from Brazil and was coupled with Tri-Mil straight through exhaust pipes. This combination not only looks great but gives the buggy a fabulous soundtrack. Drive is transmitted to the road via awesomely wide 15” Ultra alloy wheels and Cooper Cobra tyres. The chassis, floor and suspension were all powder coated in black and as can be seen are hardly marked, even on the underside of the car.
The spec includes Sports Corbeau seats in the front, seat belts for all four occupants and a stainless steel roll hoop and engine bay guard, ensuring that everyone is comfortable and safely contained.
It has been used very sparingly as is obvious from its immaculate condition. The suspension, underfloor, inner wheel arches and interior all showing minimal evidence of use.
Not to be confused with home-made variants, this is a rare opportunity to own - without joining waiting lists - the ‘real thing’. Built by the professionals and MOT and Tax exempt, this Buggy is ready for a huge amount of motoring fun.

1971 VOLKSWAGEN BEACH BUGGY
by KOMBAT
Registration No: WKT 464J
Chassis No: 11122898864

or Beach Buggies built on the chassis of an existing vehicle, the Volkswagen Beetle was commonly used as the basis for the buggy. The Beetle platform was used because the rear engine layout improves traction, the air-cooled engine avoids the complexities and failure points associated with a water-cooled engines. The front suspension was considered cheap and robust and the spare parts from Volkswagen were cheap and readily available. Beach Buggies with glass-reinforced plastic (fiberglass) bodies come in many shapes and sizes. The original fiberglass Beach Buggy was the 1964 ‘Meyers Manx’ built by Bruce Meyers. Many other companies worldwide have copied the original fiberglass Beach Buggy.

This Beach Buggy is based on a 1300 Beetle that was originally registered on 4th January 1971 and was converted into its current format by Kombat. We are advised by the vendor that she runs well and is great fun to drive. The engine starts ‘on the button’ and the gearbox operates smoothly and correctly. Supplied with a V5C registration document and a current MoT test certificate valid until 22nd May 2019 this Beach Buggy is offered for sale without reserve.
