1962 HUMBER HAWK SERIES 2
Estimate: £8,000 - £10,000.

Chassis number B5105354ODHSO - this Series II Overdrive is presented some recent history dating from 1983. The file contains a used car invoice from "J.RUTHERFORD (EARLSTON) LTD" in Berwickshire dated October 8th 1985 with the mileage recorded at 41,755 miles, detailing the purchaser, an English Politician and Etonian residing at what is considered to be one of the finest examples of Scottish Baronial mansions in the country. This gentleman shows on a V5 copy as being the second owner after 1983. There is MOT history dating from June1985 with a recorded mileage of 40,776 miles along with a current and advisory free MOT certificate at 50,016 miles expiring July 2020. We also have a selection of expired Tax Disks, recent invoices and a chronological manuscript log of work completed by the vendor and current owner who has remained the registered keeper for over 9 years and drove the car some 50 miles to Auction. There is also a couple of press articles which feature the car. History then shows the car being listed by a Southern Auction House during November 2004 with a photograph of it in what appears to be a stable and stating "offered for restoration" and gaining its next registered keeper during May 2005, who having spoken with ourselves states the car was incredibly solid and apart from a full professional re-spray due to faded paintwork and some re-chroming required very little in re-commissioning and remained in this name until 2010 when our vendor took over ownership. The car has at present no early history other than its original Dundee issued registration number which would have been issued between February and September 1962 and possibly being supplied by "STOUT BROTHERS of ABERNYTE" the local Rootes Dealership. DVLA have the date of registration as June 1st 1983 and the Chassis Number as B51535400HS0 and not as per the car which reads B 510 5354 OD HSO which decodes correctly as "510" a Series II example bearing serial number "5354" "OD" denoting Overdrive and "H" Home "S" Saloon and "O" Ordinary Specification. Thanks to Steve Lewis of the PVHCC for his assistance with this listing. The car is offered with Super Snipe wheel trims as fitted and a selection of spares which are available for viewing with the car.

1926 HUMBER 9/20 - COYS AUCTIONS Auction Of Fine Historic Automobiles Syon Park, Brentford, Middlesex TW8 8JF Saturday 13th October 2018

FEATURED AUCTION

COYS AUCTIONS
Auction Of Fine Historic Automobiles
Syon Park, Brentford, Middlesex TW8 8JF
Saturday 13th October 2018

1926 HUMBER 9/20

Registration No: UH 488
Chassis No: 2885L

From the dawn of the motoring age until the end of the 1970s, Humber cars were a very important part of the British motor industry.
At first, high quality cars were produced at Beeston in Nottinghamshire and in Coventry; later production was concentrated in Coventry and a popular range of luxury light cars was developed which lasted into the late 1920s. As prosperity increased after the Great War, the firm introduced larger and more luxurious models and throughout the 1930s the catalogue came to consist overwhelmingly of large and stately cars as the Rootes Group used the Hillman marque for their cheaper offerings.
The smaller Humber cars of the 1920s represented the epitome of upper middle-class expectations and every successful doctor, broker or bank manager aspired to the cachet of this solid and respectable marque. Typical of the breed was the delightful 9/20 of 1925-28. Powered by a 1.1-litre inlet-over-exhaust four-cylinder engine, the 9/20 was beautifully made and trimmed. “A luxurious and comparatively large £280 saloon which, with an engine rated at only 8.3hp, is capable of over 50mph,” was how Light Car & Cycle Car summed it up in a contemporary road test.
This particular example was purchased in perfect running order by the vendors late husband in 1993, however was subsequently laid up almost immediately. Intended to be worked on and perfected over the years as a labour of love, sadly this dream never came to fruition.
Still remaining a wonderful project for someone to take on, included in the cars history file are some old MOT’s, the most recent from 1994 and the oldest dating back to 1982, period photos of the car when it was last used, old invoices dating back to 1970, an old Humber register and old-style V5 logbooks.
A very important piece of British motoring history and not to be missed.
