Footnotes

  • Possessing a wonderful history, this delightful Peugeot Bébé was purchased off the Paris Motor Show stand in 1902 by a Captain Kelly. Owned by Mr Bernard Wood of Whepstead, Suffolk in 1946, the car was acquired in May 1947 by Mr Kenneth Bowyer of Kirtling, Suffolk, who entered it for the third post-war London-Brighton Veteran Car Run, held in 1949. One of the accompanying photographs shows the car arriving in Brighton on Madeira Drive, and it can be seen that the condition is virtually the same as today, with perhaps a little more patina. The car has a very early VCC Certificate (No. 139) dated 24th February 1949.

When Mr Bowyer died in 1988, his widow sold the Peugeot at an auction where it was bought by noted classic car racer and collector of important motor cars, Mr Neil Corner. Neil completed several Runs and during one of them demonstrated the Peugeot's speed by starting number '302' and finishing on Madeira Drive in 15th. The car was then acquired by Veteran and Vintage motor dealer Martin Chisholm, who completed two more London to Brighton Runs with it. The current enthusiast vendor then purchased 'A 1386' from Martin Chisholm, adding the car to his private collection in the summer of 2006.

While in the vendor's care, the Bébé has completed five London to Brighton Runs, most recently in 2012, and is a past winner of the Regent Street Concours' 'Most Original Veteran' award. Kept in storage since the 2012 Run, the car nevertheless fired up first turn the other day.

Nowadays many Veterans have to some extent been restored and made to look 'factory fresh'. This car, however, is different in the sense that it is one of the few that is completely original: paintwork, upholstery, engine, and even the toolbox! A trailer and a small number of tools come with it, while noteworthy features include Gamage-Nulites front lamps, an Otto rear lamp, and a serviceable canvas hood. The accompanying history file contains London to Brighton finishers' pennants (x5), two old-style continuation logbooks, assorted correspondence, expired MoTs, photocopied technical literature, a current V5C Registration Certificate, a selection of photographs, and a number of bills, most recently from noted specialist Arthur Archer. As well as the London to Brighton Run, this charming early Peugeot would be well suited to the VCC's many singles and twins events including the popular 'Creepy Crawly' Rally.

FEATURED AUCTION
HISTORICS AUCTIONEERS
Saturday 21st September 2019
Mercedes Benz World
Weybridge, Surrey

1967 VOLKSWAGEN SUNDIAL CAMPER VAN
Registration No: VBY 396E
Chassis No: 217099414
Engine No: D1436427
Estimate: £18,000 - £24,000

  • Cover car for Ultra VW magazine
  • Fully restored split screen Sundial camper
The Volkswagen Type Two was introduced in 1950 as a multi-variant utility vehicle, known as the Transporter, Kombi or Microbus (depending on body type) and was devised as an evolution of the Volkswagen Type One, the original Beetle. The first generation of these versatile vehicles, named the T1, was produced with distinctive split-screens from 1950 until 1967. Only two models were originally offered, the Kombi and the Commercial, the Microbus was added in May 1950, and was joined by the Deluxe Microbus in June 1951.
This 1967 Sundial camper was originally imported in 2011 from Idaho, USA and fitted was with an 1800cc engine from a light aircraft! With the vehicle in need of some restoration work, the then owner had intended to scrap this engine and opt for a traditional stock overhauled 1200cc engine. After all the necessary welding and body work was complete, the then owner, in 2013 leaned on expertise from XYZ VW in Tottenham to perform the all important preparation for the camper. Before deciding on this striking colour combination of Ferrari Rosso Corsa Red and Mercedes Primrose Yellow, the decision was taken to trim the camper with a matching red before continuing on with the restoration. New brakes were fitted throughout including a new master cylinder to complement the drivability of the camper, this was coupled to a set of restored steel wheels and chrome hubcaps. The interior fitting is bespoke, the owner was disappointed with off-the-shelf options and decided to tackle this personally, thus the plywood roof panels and trim all add to the ultra cool look for this van, both inside and out. A ⅔ width rock-and-roll bed can be found next to the custom cabinets and this camper has been converted to 12v which helps to power the electrics and a modern stereo. Upon completion, this example was featured in the August 2013's edition of Ultra VW magazine for which it was the cover car. Offered today with a sensible estimate and in wonderful condition, this unique and head turning camper will be the perfect foil for events, festivals and trips to the coast where you will inevitably be the envy of camper fans throughout.

Footnotes

  • Intended to make sports car motoring available to a wider market, the Donald Healey-designed Sprite entered production in March 1958. The car's unitary construction bodyshell featured a distinctive forward-hinging bonnet/wings topped by two 'Frog Eye' headlamps, thus ensuring instant recognition and the now-familiar nickname. Despite a Spartan equipment level - even the front bumper was listed as an extra! - the 'Frog Eye' sold well, which was not really surprising as there was nothing competing with it either on price or performance.

Light, small and nimble, the Sprite soon found its way into the competition, and the works entry of John Sprinzel immediately took a class win on the 1958 Alpine Rally. Healey and Sprinzel then set about improving the Sprite fitting disc brakes and revised front bodywork to produce the Sebring Sprite. Although never a product of BMC, it is a model recognised in its own right by the FIA. Meanwhile back in Abingdon, the BMC Competitions Department set about developing a supercharged version to capture land speed records at the famous Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. Flushed with success, a supercharger was subsequently offered as a tuning option and hence the supercharged Bonneville was homologated in 1962.

This charming classic rally car has been loved, developed and campaigned by its current owner for 27 years, amassing an impressive competition record. It has competed in approximately 20 major rallies including the Monte Carlo Historique (twice), Classic Marathon (twice), the Rally of the Tests (twice), and Liège-Rome-Liège, securing various class wins and even a Concours trophy. This working competition car has all the right bits and comes with an extensive history file. Specification highlights include the following:
