The BMW E39 is the fourth generation of the BMW 5 Series which was sold from 1995 to 2003. It was launched in the sedan body style, with the wagon/estate body style (marketed as 'Touring') introduced in 1996. The E39 was replaced by the E60 in 2003, however, E39 Touring models remained in production until December 2003. The proportion of chassis components using aluminium significantly increased for the E39 and it was the first 5 Series to use aluminium components in the front suspension. It was also the first 5 Series where a four-cylinder diesel engine was available. Rack and pinion steering were used for the first time in a 5 Series, being fitted to the E39 four-cylinder and six-cylinder models. Unlike its E34 predecessor and E60 successor, the E39 was not available with all-wheel drive.
Ordered new from Rydale BMW, Newport in November 1998, this 528SE was specified in metallic Glacier Green with the expensive option of Stone Green over black leather trim by its illustrious owner. The requested delivery date was missed and Sir Norman finally took delivery of his 5 Series in early 1999, he later decided to fit Alpina special order split rim alloy wheels, front and rear valance and rear spoiler. This coupled to the original ordered M-Sport steering wheel made for a good looking car. The original service booklet found in the book pack denotes, after the pre-delivery inspection, this car was serviced expressly by Man Autohaus, BMW whilst in the care of Mr Wisdom. In 2004 he sold the car to a motor trader, Whippendell Auto Sales with 79,357 miles recorded. It was then swiftly sold to the current owner and BMW enthusiast, Mr Reilly, who has owned the car ever since. Contained within the history file are copies of the V5 registration document showing Sir Norman Wisdom OBE as the previous registered keeper, a copy of the Isle of Man registration book also in Sir Norman’s name, a full book pack and UK V5C registration document, accompanying this are various invoices and MoT test certificates from 2004 when the car was sold to our current vendor which show a good duty of care. This BMW still boasts the original torch in the glove box, the full tool kit in the boot and it is presented with a new MoT test certificate. A fantastic opportunity to own a car clearly cherished by an iconic figure, someone Charlie Chaplin once referred to as his 'favourite clown'.
