1938 AUSTIN 12/4 HEAVY PICK-UP

MOT:Exempt

- Reputedly built in 1928 and used as internal transport at Austin Longbridge until 1938

- Fully restored and described as excellent overall

- Current ownership since 1998

The following has been provided by the vendor :

"1928 The truck was built in 1928 by Austin Motors as one of a fleet of 6, and used to transport goods internally at Longbridge. 

It is believed to have been made of up various parts by the Longbridge apprentices. Some of the key features such as headlights do not match. Other parts are dated as follows:

- 1924 roller bearing engine No. 5737, 12.8HP
- 1927 chassis - No 54906
- 1928 petrol tank

There is also an angled device to the rear that was used as a hook link for towing vehicles. - Document 1: Photograph of a fleet vehicle in use at Longbridge- taken from BOOK?

1938 In 1937 the Longbridge internal transport fleet of 40 was disbanded at the request of Leonard Lord. 

Keith Webb, an apprentice at Longbridge, was given the opportunity to buy a fleet vehicle of his choice for £5.00 including number plates and tax. He bought the truck and it was registered as EOA 822 - Document 1: Registration Document 1938 - 1974

1938 The truck was taken by Keith Webb to Birdsall, Leeds, where it was used during the war to transport groceries and light goods around the village. - Document 2: 1971 - Keith Webb letter covering history from 1928- 1971

1946 Keith Webb returned from war and was reunited with the truck. Document 2: 1971 - Keith Webb letter covering history from 1928- 1971

1950 Keith Webb had made a promise to pass on the truck to Harold Clark who had driven it in Birdsall during the war years. 

Harold then passed it to his nephew Norman Clark who registered it to "James Clark & Sons, Undertakers and Joiners", Skipton. Document 2: 1971 - Keith Webb letter covering history from 1928- 1971

1960 Norman Clark gave the truck back to Harold Clark who then sold it to 2 chaps from Wharfedale, Yorkshire. Document ?: 1971 - Keith Webb letter covering 1928- 1971 and Document 3. 1971 Letter from A R Hitchings 

1965 Purchased by a tutor from Leeds Polytechnic but was not registered. - Document 3. 1971 Letter from A R Hitchings

1974 In 1974 the truck was registered to Kevin Metcalfe but was never used on the road. Document 1. 1938 - 1974 Registration document

1994 to Present The truck was found in a very poor state, mainly dismantled. It was rescued by Richard Marsden then to sell to his brother-in-law, John Gardiner who has lovingly restored it back to its original state. Document? 19?? Registration document

Vehicle Specifics

- A period truck of immense character and practicality 

- Built 1928 and used for internal transport at Austin, Longbridge. One of a small fleet of 6

- Registered 1938 - EOA 822

- 1927 chassis - No 54906. All bodywork and mechanical items have been overhauled and reconditioned by the current owner.

- 1924 roller bearing engine No. 5737, 12.8HP. Completely re-conditioned with very few miles covered since restoration

- 1928 petrol tank, new clutch, recent radiator matrix and exhaust. Re-wired and new rear lamps and flashers fitted. New "Ash" rear body frame fitted "
