The E-Type Series 2 cars that were available in 1969, 1970 and 1971 introduced a number of design changes, largely due to U.S. design legislation. The most distinctive exterior feature is the absence of the glass headlight covers, and rear lamps below raised bumpers, and a larger radiator air inlet "mouth." Safety considerations also meant that following 1968's rocker switch introduction, the steering column was made collapsible and headrests were added. A steeper-raked windshield on 2+2 models brought more glass but only two windscreen wipers. A glove-box door was now fitted on all models, together with perforated leather upholstery and newly available power steering. Brakes were new Girling disc brakes with three-piston calipers at the front and two-piston versions at the rear.
A combination steering lock and ignition key was fitted to the steering column, which replaced the dashboard mounted ignition switch and charismatic push button starter. The engine is easily identified visually by the change from smooth polished cam covers to a stronger, "ribbed" variety. It was de-tuned in the US with twin Strombergs and larger valve clearances, but in the UK retained triple SUs and the much tighter valve clearances. This detuned engine produced 245 hp (183 kW), a drop of 20 hp over the UK version. It is thought a total 18,809 Series 2 E-Types were built.
The Jaguar Series 2 E-Type Roadster offered here has recently been imported from the USA. It is described by the vendor as a matching numbers car with a Jaguar Heritage Certificate, and was recently purchased from it’s long term owner who enjoyed and maintained the car regularly. As a result, it feels very sorted mechanically and is an absolute joy to drive with it’s fantastic road manners. The body on this car presents very well with nice panel fit, good bonnet gapping, and doors that open and close very nicely. The paintwork presents beautifully with a good gloss, definitely a very good job. As with any fifty year old car, it is showing a few minor blemishes, notably some heat lifting around the LH (exhaust side) bonnet louvre, a few touched-up chips and a small scratch on the passenger door. The chromework appears to be mostly original and is very good.
The car’s mechanicals are a dream. The engine starts easily on the key with no smoke or worrying noises. It revs fantastically when warmed up with great running oil pressure at 45-50 psi. The car runs, drives, shifts, brakes, and steers crisply, and the ride is superb. The correct chrome wheels are in great condition fitted with a new, quality Goodyear tyre set. It can be pushed hard through it’s paces with confidence.
The car’s undercarriage is extremely solid, clean, and presentable overall, with some small bubbling on the RH front.
Overall, a very attractive and superb driving open E-type that can be enjoyed instantly. This car should be enjoyed to the fullest in it’s current approachable condition, with it’s continued regular maintenance.
