1983 Madison Boat Tail Tourer

The Madison Boat Tail tourers were designed by Neville Trickett and were inspired by the Auburn’s and Packard’s of the 1930s. They used the chassis, engine and mechanicals from VW Beetles and Ford Cortina’s and appear to have been produced between about 1978 and 1990 with GRP panels all round.

 

This example is a relatively early one, having been registered in 1982 and is the rear engine Beetle based variant. It has obviously not been used for a considerable time and there are no records of MOTs online or in paper format. Experian does not mention any previous keepers, so it is plausible that the deceased owner may have had it since new, using it very little and covering very few miles. The speedo only shows 930 miles, but bidders will need to satisfy themselves on whether that is genuine or not!  

Sadly, solicitors dealing with the estate have not been able to find any paperwork relating to the car and we have chosen to photograph it in the same condition it was found in the garage, thick dust and cobwebs included – to show a true reflection of the condition and underuse. Underneath the dust and cobwebs, is a complete black GRP body, a 1,776cc engine with a big Webber carb and some exciting-looking, potentially rumbling side exhausts.

Incredibly rare machine; from the Ken Norton collection; competed in the Banbury run in 2017 and Pioneer runs of 1985 and 1987

‘The car that leads the fashion in the new motoring  - The A.C.Sociable’ The Cyclecar, December 1912.

This lovely Auto-Carriers Sociable three-wheeled machine was first registered in 1911 in Edinburgh - on the registration it still wears today, S 8612. It is understood that the first owner is likely to have been a J.H.Farr of Scotland (although no document to prove). Having just two further recorded keepers in the 1970s and 80s, our vendor, Mr Kenneth Norton acquired the AC in 1984, after it had been stored in a barn for ten years, mostly present and correct but in need of some sympathetic restoration.

Photographs show the AC when it was bought by our vendor, in quite a state. It appeared complete and original with the absence of the hood, front tyres and no doubt some of the upholstery. Bought from a Joseph Henry Hubbard in Uttoxeter for £1,250, work was immediately started by our vendor, the car passing an MOT the following year in 1985 - taking part in the Sunbeam MCC Pioneer Run the same year and again in 1987.

During that time, a hood was fitted, which provided a little more useability. There would of course have been one originally fitted which was unusual for the early Cyclecars. In fact, the marketing of the Sociable called it the ‘ideal winter vehicle’ compared to others available at the time.

There is a lot of correspondence on file between Mr Norton and various AC owners around the world, as he appears to have needed a new rear wheel and was thinking of replacing the engine, although this does not appear to have happened as the number currently on the engine matches the original paperwork.  

Understood to have been shown at many events over the years and more recently taking part in the Banbury run of 2017, this AC Sociable has been resting for the last few years, mainly due to the unfortunate ill health of our vendor, so is sure to need some re-commissioning.

S 8612 (which remains transferable), Car Number 1414, is reluctantly offered for sale after long term ownership and hopes to find someone else to care for her for another generation. A truly rare opportunity to own what is surely one of very few Sociables still registered in the world and possibly one of a very small handful in the UK.

It should also be noted that there is a trailer included with this lot, which has been used specifically to transport the AC over the years.

Owned by our vendor since 1975 - at the same address as it was first registered in 1938; unusual cabriolet body; in need of restoration but surprisingly clean underneath

This Goodwood bodied Austin was first registered to Miss Mary Melliar Betton-Foster of Overton Grange, near Ludlow in 1938. Until the early 1960s, Miss Betton-Foster continued to own the car, registering it at subsequent addresses in Cowes on the Isle of Wight, Somerset, Weymouth, Kent, Central London and Essex so it has certainly travelled some miles over the years.

One of the three buff logbooks that accompany the car, document its second recorded owner as returning the car to Shropshire before passing it to our vendor in 1975, who by a fabulous quirk of coincidence resides at the original home of the car in Overton, Ludlow! This Austin has truly gone full circle back to its roots and is reluctantly being put up for sale, due to ill health.

We understand that our vendor started to tinker with the car in the early 1980s and although no stranger to unusual vehicles, time and space led the Austin to take a back seat to other cars being worked on in the same shed.

Known as ‘Matilda,’ she was worked on every so often, the engine being turned and fired up, the brakes being released and the tyres being inflated and in 2002 it seems our vendor put a proper budget together to get her back on the road for the cost of approximately £1,000. Although some of this was spent on materials and labour, the project never really took off and their remains plenty of work to be done. Structurally it is not as bad as it might look to some and we understand that it has been kept inside since the 1970s.

The original registration MG 6046 is no longer recognized by the DVLA, but it is not assigned to any other vehicle either and there is a 1984 letter on file from Swansea implying that once restoration is finished, this registration could be put back on the car. This would of course need some more contemporary confirmation from them now but it’s a good start on what could be made into a very presentable and rare motorcar with relative ease.

Introduced in 1947, the A40 was Austin's first 'clean sheet' post-WW2 family saloon design. Based on a sturdy chassis frame equipped with independent front suspension, a 'live' rear axle, and four-wheel drum brakes, the newcomer was powered by a 1200cc OHV four-cylinder engine allied to a four-speed manual transmission. With some 40bhp on tap, it was reputedly capable of over 70 mph. Once production was in full swing and the principal Devon (four-door) and Dorset (two-door) saloon models firmly established, other variants joined the A40 line-up including a Jensen-designed sports four-seater, 10cwt pick-up, 10cwt van and estate car (or 'Countryman' as it was known). Styled in-house by Dick Burzi, the commercial A40s contrived to be stylish yet practical. Though, today - thanks to years of overloading, stop-start motoring and general abuse - survivors are few and far between.

Finished in Keswick Green with Brown leather interior which the vendor informs is mostly original, this A40 Countryman is an original bodied Countryman with sliding side windows. In its current ownership for around the past three years, Austin has been subject to restoration work under present custodianship including paint, engine overhaul, re-wiring, and fitting of the electronic ignition, new water pump, and unleaded cylinder head. Offered with a full V5, original order form, and a substantial collection of past MOTs and invoices from the Austin's life, it is also offered with photos of the restoration work. The A40 is showing an unwarranted 71,700 miles.
