 1956 Renault Dauphine Saloon
Chassis no. 2742738

Conceived in the early 1950s as replacement for the 4CV, the Dauphine commenced pre-production testing in July 1952, the fleet of prototypes enduring the harshest of conditions in some of the most inhospitable paces on earth. Production commenced at Renault's new Lefaucheux factory at Flins in December 1955. A bigger car than its predecessor, the Dauphine nevertheless followed the 4CV's basic layout, with rear-mounted engine and independent suspension all round, at the rear by means of swing axles. Despite its 845cc engine and modest maximum power output of 31bhp, the Dauphine proved a surprisingly capable rally car in modified form, winning the Monte Carlo Rally outright in 1958 (Monraisse/Feret). Moreover, In 1956 a Renault Dauphine finished 82nd in the Mille Miglia with the women team of Gilberte Thirion. The Dauphine remained in production until 1965, by which time it had become the first French car to sell more than two million units.

This early example, Mille Miglia eligible, was registered in the Netherlands in 1984 by a Mr Hoogslag in Rotterdam and formed part of a Dutch collection until May 2013 when it was bought by the current owner. Only partly restored, the car is presented in a very good and highly original condition and comes with cancelled Dutch registration papers (1984).
