Those of you with good memories will look at this zany Nuova Cinquecento and remember the 1996 Volkswagen Golf Harlequin Edition. The rest of you can look it up on Giggle.
Our vendor – an otherwise sensitive and sober fellow – created this all by himself and for his own amusement (which is why there are no invoices to accompany it).
As well as its coat of many colours, this 1967 LHD Fiat 500F has also had: new floors, inner and outer sills, rear quarter panels (not just repair sections), inner rear wings, front wings, bonnet and stainless steel bumpers. All rust sections were cut out and replaced and all the box sections were treated with Terosan WX215 wax oil.
All of the brake system has been renewed, including the master cylinder, wheel cylinders, brake shoes, and hoses. The steering has new kingpins and bushes and all the suspension silentbloc bushes have been replaced.
The engine is a later 650cc twin which has had new barrels, pistons, Nardi high-lift cam, re-worked head with new valves, guides, seats and springs. It will run on unleaded fuel. The crankshaft has been reground, with new shell-bearings, a lightweight re-faced flywheel and new clutch pressure plate fitted. The whole crank assembly has been dynamically balanced – and that makes a huge difference on this upright parallel twin engine.
The gearbox was overhauled and new diff bearings fitted along with stronger drive shafts and new seals and gaiters. The car also has a reconditioned generator and starter motor, new fuel pump and new exhaust manifold.
To sum up: not just a pretty face. This is a Fiat 500 that is a little bit different in so many ways, goes better than they ever did new, and must be an absolute hoot to drive. If you want a colourful, head-turning bundle of fun from Italy this is probably the best value example you will find.

Dennis Brothers was one of the UKs earliest car manufacturers producing their first  motorised vehicle in 1898. It was a tricycle fitted with a single cylinder De Dion engine. This was followed by other motorised vehicles with the first proper car being built in 1901.  By 1904, having had little success in car manufacturing, they moved into the production of commercial vehicles with their first, a 1904 15cwt van being supplied to Harrods. By 1908 they were well established with good sales of buses and fire engines, and employed over 400 workers at their factory in Guildford, Surrey.
During the First World war they produced over 7,000 three ton trucks for military use. Subsequently post war there was a glut of used trucks available and sales fell, and they branched into other municipal vehicles such as dustcarts and road sweepers.
The 1929 30cwt Flat Bed offered here started life with Trowbridge Dairies in Wiltshire. Later an exhibit at Dargate Museum in Kent it was then used as a promotional vehicle for Red Lion Breweries. Subsequently it was bought by Borough Green Sawmills in 1998, and successfully completed the London to Brighton Run in 2006, 2008 and 2010 with photographs in the history folder.
For a 90 year old vehicle the history file is a tad thin, bit we assume no one bothered keeping records of a working vehicle. The restoration seems to have taken place before its life as a promo vehicle for Red Lion Breweries and its in overall excellent condition as can be seen from the photographs. The Vendor says it starts easily with good oil pressure, although we haven’t heard it running.
There are 11 old MoTs on file, and the DVLA lists it has having had just two registered keepers. Now offered due to lack of use it would be a shame to see it in a museum, and it deserves to out and earning money. Its blue paintwork is just begging to be sign written once again!

Those of you of a certain age will, no doubt, remember the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band (look ‘em up on your electronic device, sonny). Search deeper into the canyons of your mind and you may recall their one-time (4:4) bassist – and owner of this very Alvis TJ 12/50 - Vernon Dudley Bohay-Nowell.
Bohay-Nowell owned the car in the mid-Sixties and re-bodied it (from an Atlantic saloon) but, in the words of the current owner, it was “a frightful concoction” and he began a total rebuild of the car when he bought it in 2010.
The car was stripped down to the chassis, which was grit-blasted and painted and fitted with a much more elegant body crafted in aluminium by Terry Hall, of Cirencester. Rather fittingly, the bodywork was then given some smart but subtle two-tone grey paintwork. That same year (2011), the wheels were blasted, painted and fitted with Blockley tyres.
New carpets, leather upholstery and a very smart engine-turned dashboard added to general air of elegance and a new windscreen (by Wessex Windscreens) added a finishing touch.
The twin SU carburettors were rebuilt by Gower and Lee and the engine was checked over, pressure-tested and found to need only a new flywheel and the clutch re-lining. The car was comprehensively re-wired and an electric fan added to ensure that the engine stays cool at all times.
The vendor has done a commendable job of resurrecting the car over five years and the receipts for work done and parts used are on file. UG 83 is now a very attractive, not to mention practical, post-vintage thoroughbred car ready, weather permitting, to be enjoyed by its lucky new owner.
