- First used by Hillman in 1932, the Minx name continued on the company's medium-sized saloon into the post-war era. The first Minx set the pattern for its successors, being more comfortable and better equipped than rival 10hp designs while offering a respectable turn of speed courtesy of its 1,185cc, 27bhp, sidevalve engine. Elegant six-light coachwork and a flat-fronted radiator with chromed surround were obvious attractions. Beneath the skin, Bendix 'duo servo' mechanical brakes and Luvax hydraulic shock absorbers ensured that the Minx's road manners did not disappoint. The Minx also provided the basis for Hillman's first foray into the market for small sports cars. Modified with a lower chassis - under-slung at the rear - and a slightly more powerful engine, this was the Aero Minx, which featured streamlined coachwork in what would be come known as the 'Art Deco' style, designed by the firm of Kevill-Davies & March. Premiered at the 1932 London Motor Show in sports saloon form, it is recognised as the first model from a major manufacturer to adopt this particular style of coachwork. In addition to the streamlined saloon, the Aero Minx was also available as a two-seater sports and a coupé. Bodies for the Aero Minx Streamlined Saloon (as it had become known) were built by Carbodies of Coventry.
The car offered here though, is a rare coachbuilt example on the Aero Minx chassis, carrying a Tickford Burlington Coupé body by Salmons & Sons of Newport Pagnell, a firm that would be acquired by Aston Martin after WW2. We are advised that only one other example of this particular model is known to exist. Purchased by the current vendor's son some eight years ago, the car comes with a most substantial history file containing, among other documents, photographs of a 'body off' restoration carried out during the mid-1990s. This charming little sports car also comes with an old-style continuation logbook, sundry bills, Hillman Minx instruction book, and a detailed list of maintenance (1968-1970). A defective speedometer is the only fault notified
