1964 ALBATROSS MkII CONTINENTAL SPEEDBOAT
Colour:  White
Registration Number:
Chassis No:1252
Engine Size:
Engine Number:
Estimate: £18,000 -£20,000

Albatross boats were designed and built by Peter Hives and Archie Peace from 1949 – 1966. Peace had a background in aircraft engineering so it is no surprise that the Albatross is lightweight and constructed from aluminium. The boats were beautifully made and not cheap – owners included Prince Phillip, Prince Rainier of Monaco, Prince Bira (the racing driver), and multi-millionaire Aristotle Onassis.
Of the 1,300 Albatross speedboats produced only 160 or so were fitted with the Coventry Climax FEW 1,216cc sohc engine – the same engine used in the Lotus Elite. This Albatross Mk2 Continental has the added benefit of an enlarged, 1,500cc, engine, as used in Formula 2 racing cars of the period. Top speed is almost 50mph, which might not sound much to the landlubber, but is going some on water.
Hull number 1252 was built in 1964, used chiefly for water-skiing, and had only two owners until 2015. The boat was in original, but tired, condition at that time, when it was bought by an enthusiast who carried out a thorough restoration.
The hull was stripped and all areas of corrosion were cut out, with new panels and sections being fabricated and welded into the structure, which was then protected by marine-grade epoxy coatings. All brightwork was stripped, polished and anodised, and a new dashboard and gauges were fitted. New upholstery and flooring were also installed.
The Coventry climax engine was stripped and rebuilt and the opportunity was taken to enlarge the capacity to 1,500cc, with many new parts including cylinder liners, pistons, and even a new cylinder head. The engine was balanced and the block and head were Ultrasealed. The boat was also re-wired and new switches and accessories fitted.
1252 also comes with an overhauled original Albatross trailer.
This Albatross Continental Mk2 has been meticulously restored and is in ready-to-go condition. A rare opportunity to join the boat-loving ranks of princes and plutocrats.
