The Birmingham Small Arms Company was established in 1860 by a group of gunsmiths who produced military and sporting firearms. In 1880, the company diversified into bicycles and by 1911, motor bicycles were in production.

In response to the popularity of their rivals, BSA began production of the A10 in 1950. The machine was an evolution of the 500cc A7 and sold exceptionally well, suited as it was to both sidecars and solo riders. The Bert Hopwood designed 646cc air-cooled twin unit provided ample oomph, achieving in the Super Rocket of 1957 a dizzying 112mph.

This rather smart Rocket Gold Star replica started life as an A10 Super Rocket and was originally dispatched to California, USA, on the 7th of June 1957 (according to the dating certificate included in the file). We are informed that the RGS upgrades include clip-on handlebars, a rev counter, an uprated exhaust system, rear footrests, a special fuel tank and seat. It also has a Superleggera top yoke and Eddie Dow type fork damper rods. Apparently, the wheels have been rebuilt with stainless steel spokes and new tyres were fitted at the time. We understand that the engine has recently had a top end overhaul, with new valves and pistons fitted, and the oil pump is a 5RM.

The current motorcycle collector custodian purchased the machine in its present condition and tells us that the engine and braking system still require some running in.

The BSA has clearly had a lot of money lavished on it and with its stainless fittings, it certainly looks the part. The file contains the aforesaid dating certificate from the BSA Owners’ Club, a picture of the frame number and the V5C registration certificate.
