ANNUAL CLASSIC CHRISTMAS SALE
SANDOWN PARK, ESHER,
TUESDAY 12th DECEMBER 2017

1956 JENSEN 541
Registration No - 222 bpl
Chassis No - 5411315803

The Jensen 541 was produced by Jensen Motors from 1954 to 1959. The 541 used fibreglass bodywork mounted on a steel chassis and was fitted with a straight-six engine, three SU carburettor version of the 4-litre Austin engine and four-speed transmission with optional overdrive. The body consisted of three major mouldings and the entire front was rear hinged and could be raised for engine access. The doors were aluminium. The suspension was independent at the front using coil springs with a Panhard rod located rigid axle and leaf springs at the rear. A choice of wire spoked or steel disc wheels with centre lock fitting was offered. The 541 was also a luxurious car with the well-equipped interior featuring leather seats as standard. The individual seats in front separated by a high transmission tunnel and the rear seats had a small centre armrest and could also be tilted forwards to increase luggage space. Production of the Jensen 541 ended in 1959 and the 541 S early 1963 when the range was replaced by the C-V8.

Offered here is a restored Jensen 541 carefully hand built in West Bromwich in 1956, some sixty years ago, and still looking as dramatically different as it did in the day. When they were first launched they had the same effect on a car-starved public as the Bugatti Veyron did fifty years later. This delightful example still carries it original registration 222 BPL issued in Guildford. The V5 shows just three owners and perhaps further research by the new owner could reveal more about the life and times of this stylish fifties Grand Tourer. The restoration appears to have been comprehensive and the interior is absolutely superb in red leather with matching carpets. The original body colour was green and, in the period, a lot of 541s were finished in sober, even sombre, colours 222 BPL now looks resplendent in a Metallic Royal Blue which really lifts the car. The cabin of this GT is a very functional place to be with its impressive dash layout and its original style three-spoke steering wheel.

Works undertaken on the car are as follows: Bodywork fully refurbished and newly painted. Underside primer and painted. Chassis sandblasted, made sound and painted. Engine overhaul. Complete brake refurbishment, callipers fitted with stainless steel sleeves. All new nuts, bolts and washers. New wheels and tyres. Complete new wiring loom. New temperature gauge. Refurbished radiator. New heater matrix. Refurbished fuel tank. Cleaned and refurbished carburettors. All new track rod ends. Complete new Leather Re-trim including headlining, door panels and carpets. New steering wheel. Original jack and wheel brace. All chrome re-chromed. Complete new stainless steel exhaust system. New front and rear windscreens and rubbers. New battery.
