Launched in March 1972, the Ford Granada succeeded the Zephyr as Ford's executive car offering, being produced at Ford’s German factory in Cologne and at its British factory in Dagenham.
The car became popular for taxi, fleet and police usage and was commonly adapted for applications such as limousines and hearses. By 1976, all Granada production had moved to Germany and the following year Ford’s executive car was restyled and upgraded as the Granada MkII with handsome straight-edged styling. Along with it came a wider choice of engines, the Cologne V6 in 2-litre, 2.3-litre and 2.8-litre forms replacing the older Essex units.
The top-of-the-range 2.8-litre V6 model developed 160bhp and when driving through Ford’s excellent five-speed manual transmission, could launch the car to 60mph in around 9 seconds with a top speed of 120mph. Strong, fast and comfortable, the MkII was always very popular with the Police, both fictional and real; frequently seen doing lurid powerslides on TV shows like ‘The Sweeney’ and ‘The Professionals’ as well as serving the nation on the motorways of Britain.
This super example is no replica however, being a genuine Police highway patrol car which served its time with the Kent Constabulary. It has spent its recent past in the Kent Police Museum and has switches for ‘Blues, Sign and Warning’ just as it should. The odometer shows an indicated 40,285 miles which cannot be warranted (although we suspect it hasn’t been clocked!) and it looks to be in very sound condition although an online check shows that it was last MOTd and on the road in 2010.
One of the sights and sounds of the ‘80s, this proper Police Granada is a real crowd-puller, looks like huge fun to own and would be a popular new recruit to the ever growing Police Vehicle Enthusiasts Club.
