1925 DONNET-ZEDEL G2 SALOON
Registration Number: BF 7075
Chassis No: 18463-59108
Engine No: 18669
MOT & Tax Exempt

Founded in 1919 and all but forgotten now, Donnet-Zedel had grown to become France's fourth-largest motor manufacturer by 1927. Formerly engaged in the manufacture of flying boats, Jérôme Donnet purchased Automobiles Zedel of Pontarlier to create the Donnet-Zedel marque, whose first offering was the CI-6, a pre-war Zedel design. In 1925 the firm introduced the highly successful Type G, a 1,098cc four-cylinder light car, which was built in considerable numbers in the former Donnet aircraft factory at Gennevilliers, Seine. With the sale of Zedel's old factory at Pontarlier in 1928, the Donnet-Zedel name was dropped.

Hit by the Depression-like so many of its contemporaries, Donnet continued to build cars, albeit in declining numbers, until the firm ceased production in December 1934. Its Nanterre factory was then sold to Henri-Théodore Pigozzi, who commenced production of built-under-licence FIATs under the SIMCA name.

Offered here is a charming French saloon car that has benefited from a 'ground upwards' restoration carried out in the late 1980s/early 1990s. More recent works have included fitting new tyres; replacing the clutch; fitting new upgraded brake shoes, and overhauling the steering box. Everything works and the car comes with a history file containing invoices for recent works totalling £6,000. The original dynamo and carburettor are included in the sale together with a bespoke distributor conversion kit that was specially made for the car.

Please note the V5C records the chassis number as 59108 and not 18463 as on the chassis plate.

Told by the post-war government to 'export or die', the British motor industry responded valiantly, none more so than Jaguar, soon to become the UK's biggest US dollar earner. Indeed, Jaguar's Mark IV drophead coupé was built almost exclusively for export, the majority being allocated to the USA. Production spanned little more than a year (1947-1948) during which only 184 Mark IV 3½-Litre drophead coupés were built in right-hand drive configuration plus a further 317 LHD cars, 49 of which were delivered in 'Complete Knocked Down (CKD) form.

In his definitive book on the marque: SS & Jaguar Cars, written in association with Jaguar Heritage using their detailed archives, Allan Crouch states that there are only 46 right-hand drive 3½-Litre drophead coupés left in the world, making this exclusive variant among the rarest of all Jaguar's post-WW2 production cars.

This 3½-litre Mark IV was in pristine working order when it was purchased by the current owners in 1982 following its 'Car of the Year' award at London's Earls Court Motor Show. Over the course of the last 39 years, the Jaguar has been maintained and kept in running order, including extensive work in 2003 that included a complete engine overhaul and a new exhaust system. More recently the clutch was replaced, since when the Mark IV has been used for a number of family weddings. It has seen very little use in recent times and is sold strictly as viewed.

1915 Trumbull 15B Cyclecar - .BONHAMS AUCTIONS The Beaulieu SaleCollectors' Motor Cars & Motorcycles and Automobilia Saturday 7th September 2019 Beaulieu, National Motor Museum

FEATURED AUCTION

.BONHAMS AUCTIONS
The Beaulieu SaleCollectors' Motor Cars
& Motorcycles and Automobilia
Saturday 7th September 2019
Beaulieu, National Motor Museum

1915 Trumbull 15B Cyclecar
Registration no. not UK registered
Chassis no. 637
*Rare American high-quality cyclecar
*An older restoration
*Previously part of the Gerald Sichel Collection
*Present ownership since 2010

Footnotes

  • 'The Trumbull was a honey of a cyclecar. Had more cyclecars been as well made, this type of vehicle might have enjoyed more success in America.' – 'Standard Catalog of American Cars 1805-1942.'

Although conceived by Harry J Stoops, the car took its name from its financial backers, brothers Alexander H and Isacc B Trumbull, who had acquired the rights to the design when they bought the American Cyclecar Company. Built-in Bridgeport, Connecticut, the Trumbull was powered by a four-cylinder 14/18hp engine, designed by K L Hermann of the Hermann Engineering Company, and featured shaft drive and (in 1915) a three-speed sliding-gear transmission (1914 cars had a friction transmission). It was nothing if not compact, its vital statistics being a wheelbase of 80", a track of 44", and a weight of only 950lbs. A top speed of 50mph was claimed. Roadster and coupé models were offered.

Most of the Trumbull's home-grown competitors left much to be desired in terms of practicality and reliability, tarnishing the cyclecar's reputation and leading to sluggish sales. The result was that most of Trumbull's output was exported, some 1,500 of the 2,000 produced finding customers in Europe and Australia. On 7th May 1915, a consignment of 20 Trumbull's, together with Isaac Trumbull, was aboard the liner Lusitania when it was torpedoed by a German U-Boat. Isaac had been on his way to the UK to clinch an order for 300 cars, and his tragic death brought an end to the Trumball Motor Car Company.

An older restoration, this Trumbull 15B cyclecar previously formed part of the Gerald Sichel Collection and was purchased by the Key Collection when a selection of the Sichel cars was auctioned at Hershey in 2010. A rare example of the American cyclecar, this charming little Trumbull should provide the fortunate next owner with years of enjoyment.

Should the vehicle remain in the UK, local import taxes of 5% will be added to the hammer price.
