1959 JAGUAR Mk IX SALOON
Chassis No: P771603BW
Engine No: NC3159-8
Estimate: £19,000 - £24,000

The Jaguar Mk. IX was produced between 1959 and 1961 and replaced the previous Mk. VIII. Standard transmission was a four-speed manual system; options included overdrive, but most cars were built with a Borg-Warner three-speed automatic gearbox. Internally, an enlarged-bore 3.8 litre, 220bhp DOHC straight-six replaced the previous 3.4 litre unit with two SU carburettors were fitted. Four-wheel servo-assisted Dunlop disc brakes and recirculating ball power steering was now standard equipment. The torsion bar independent front suspension and leaf-sprung rear live axle were retained from the Mk. VIII. The body was generally similar to its predecessor, but the sunshine roof became a standard fitting for the UK market. The interior was in the same luxurious mode with extensive use of leather, walnut wood trim and deep pile carpet. The Mk. IX's power and good brakes for a vehicle of that era, together with its undoubtedly impressive aesthetic appearance, makes it quite a common choice for the classic car market.

This early Jaguar Mk. IX Saloon has had three owners from new, the current owner purchased it in 2002. The first owner, Miss N B Gray, was a senior Police officer base in Birmingham who had a chauffeur drive her around. Supplied in June 1959 it has the Borg-Warner automatic gearbox fitted which allowed a front bench seat to be fitted. This matching numbers car was professionally restored in 1997 to the original specification of Indigo Blue over light blue with light blue leather interior and comes with the correct, complete toolkits fitted in both front doors. It is supplied with a V5C registration document, a heritage certificate, the original ‘first series’ handbook and two large files the first containing old registration documents, MoT’s and invoices. The second, a detailed history by the current owner while in his ownership with invoices and notes of works carried out. This Mk. IX emphasises Sir Williams Lyon’s theme of ‘Grace, Space and Pace’ with its flowing lines and extensive amount of chrome.

Told by the post-war government to 'export or die', the British motor industry responded valiantly, none more so than Jaguar, soon to become the UK's biggest US dollar earner. Indeed, Jaguar's Mark IV drophead coupé was built almost exclusively for export, the majority being allocated to the USA. Production spanned little more than a year (1947-1948) during which only 184 Mark IV 3½-Litre drophead coupés were built in right-hand drive configuration plus a further 317 LHD cars, 49 of which were delivered in 'Complete Knocked Down (CKD) form.

In his definitive book on the marque: SS & Jaguar Cars, written in association with Jaguar Heritage using their detailed archives, Allan Crouch states that there are only 46 right-hand drive 3½-Litre drophead coupés left in the world, making this exclusive variant among the rarest of all Jaguar's post-WW2 production cars.

This 3½-litre Mark IV was in pristine working order when it was purchased by the current owners in 1982 following its 'Car of the Year' award at London's Earls Court Motor Show. Over the course of the last 39 years, the Jaguar has been maintained and kept in running order, including extensive work in 2003 that included a complete engine overhaul and a new exhaust system. More recently the clutch was replaced, since when the Mark IV has been used for a number of family weddings. It has seen very little use in recent times and is sold strictly as viewed.

  • Manual gearbox with overdrive
  • Significant recent work carried out
  • New tyres recently fitted

The Jaguar Mk. II was a medium-sized saloon built from 1959 to 1969 as a successor to the 2.4 and 3.4 litre models manufactured between 1957 and 1959. It was a handsome, powerful and good handling saloon that was offered with a choice of three six-cylinder twin-cam engines; 2.4 litre, 3.4 litre or 3.8 litre. After the appreciation of the Mk. I, Jaguar’s successor was well-received making a good car even better.  Similar in appearance, but with a bigger glass area, it boasted a wider track to improve road holding together with minor front suspension changes to reduce body roll and all-round disc rather than drum brakes. Raced by all the top drivers of the day including Graham Hill, Roy Salvadori and Michael Parkes, the Mk. II has scored victories throughout saloon car races in the sixties and was also raced across Europe in the Tour De France and Monte Carlo rally.

Originally registered on 17th June 1965, this 3.8-litre version of the Jaguar S-Type looks good in the classic colour combination of Old English White with red leather interior. This traditional look is enhanced with whitewall tyres. The interior of this S-Type has benefitted from being retrimmed at some point and displays the glorious walnut veneered dashboard and door cappings which is synonymous with classic Jaguars of this period. The S-Type was a popular car with police forces throughout the country due to its brisk performance and good road-holding models. This desirable manual gearbox example features an overdrive and when requested, the 3.8-litre engine fired into life. The vendor has invoices for a front brake, master cylinder and handbrake overhaul, engine service, re-sealing of the steering box, and carburettor overhaul. The rear subframe has also been out and new bushes fitted, both fuel tanks have been removed and overhauled, painted and weatherproofed. Offered to auction with a V5C registration document and a Jaguar Heritage Certificate, these handsome Jaguar’s always create interest when offered to the auction.

1976 JAGUAR XJ12 SERIES 2 COUPE - HISTORICS AUCTION ASCOT RACECOURSE 17th April 2021

SELECTED BY THE SQUIRREL
NUTS ABOUT CLASSICS

FEATURED AUCTION
HISTORICS AUCTION

ASCOT RACECOURSE

17th April 2021

1976 JAGUAR XJ12 SERIES 2 COUPE

Registration No: OCF 395R
Chassis No: 2G1318BW
Engine No: 31798
Estimate: £14,000 - £20,000

  • A well-presented, matching numbers example
  • Desirable 5.3 litre V12 engine

A9,378 car production run of two-door XJ coupés with a pillarless hardtop body called the XJ-C was built between 1975 and 1978. The car was originally shown at the London Motor Show in October 1973, but it subsequently became clear that it was not ready for production, and the economic troubles unfolding in the western world at that time seemed to have reduced any sense of urgency about producing and selling the cars. After reports of problems with window sealing delaying production, XJ coupés finally started to emerge from Jaguar showrooms some two years later. The coupé was based on the short-wheelbase version of the XJ. The doors were made out of a lengthened standard XJ front door (the weld seams are clearly visible under the interior panels where two front door shells were grafted together with a single outer skin). Both six and twelve-cylinder models were offered; 6505 of the former and 1873 of the latter were made. The delayed introduction, the labour-intensive work required by the modified saloon body, the higher price than the four-door car, and the early demise prompted by the new XJ-S, all ensured a small production run making these coupés quite rare today.

This lovely example was first registered on 11th November 1976 and is presented in gleaming red coachwork with cream leather trim and complimentary red piping. This rare car has formed part of a large collection, has been both maintained well but also stored correctly since restoration. Offered with a UK V5C register
