1967 RENAULT 10 ALCONI
Registration No: To Be Registered
Chassis No: 6610748

Colour: Blue
Guide Price £13,500-£17,000

The Renault Alconi was a performance version of the Renault 8 and 10 sold by Renault (Africa) Ltd, a subsidiary of the French Regie Renault Factory. They were sold new through the Renault dealer network in South Africa between 1965 and 1970 and came with a full factory warranty. The concept was intended to increase car sales to a racing mad South African public by taking advantage of their race-track successes in local "Sprint" and "Endurance" races. A total of 458 factory Alconis were made, along with hundreds of conversion kits to allow owners to modify their existing cars, but only the official cars were supplied with ‘Alconi’ badges on the front wing.

The car was developed specifically for the motorsport-mad South African market and was the brainchild of John Conchie and Eric 'Puddles' Adler, who traded as "Alconi Developments" – a mixture of their surnames. It helped Renault increase its sales in SA and also market a whole range of Alconi performance upgrades, making the car something of a legend in its home market where R10 Touring Cars had won a series of production car championships.

Production of the Alconi started in batches of 50 R10s. Standard R10s were marketed with the Renault 1108cc Caravelle engine, with slightly better performance from a twin-choke Weber carburettor. The production Alconis used the same upgrade kit on the newer R10 1108cc engine but retained the production carburettor, and the vehicle was slightly lower (1 inch) than its standard brother.  Colour choices were initiated: Alconi blue with white flashes down the sides, Red with white flashes and white with red flashes.  Production continued through 1967 and 1968 and possibly 1969.

A 1973 Renault 10 Alconi. This is a very rare car, 1 of 458, that was only built in South Africa, and as quick as a 1300cc Renault 10 Gordini. This car has just come in from South Africa and is in very good condition having had a concours re-build 15 years ago. There is a copy of a letter by the original owner who owned it from new until 2005, and there seems to have been only two other owners, in which he lists its early history and specification. It appears that the engine was bored out from its original 1106cc to 1206cc, a "hot 701 camshaft" fitted, the twin-choke Weber was uprated from a 32 to a 36, a tubular exhaust fitted, and adjustable shock absorbers (probably Koni) fitted all round.

The 30TS was Renault's range-topping executive car produced between 1975 and 1984. Its specification was sumptuous, including power-assisted steering, four round Quartz-iodide headlights, disc brakes on each corner, electric front windows and central locking all as standard. Offered with a choice of 4-speed manual or 3-speed automatic, it was the most upmarket and expensive Renault of the time and of course came with Renault's ‘magic carpet’ ride and hugely comfortable seats as standard.
The 30TS was also the first Renault to benefit from the newly introduced 2,664cc PRV V6 engine. Developed jointly between Peugeot, Renault and Volvo, this unit produced a lazy 130bhp and would propel the 30TS to a top speed of 115 mph. Incorporating the then revolutionary front and rear crumple zones and side impact protection, the 30 was also one of the safest cars of the road at the time. An exceptional car, the only drawback being the huge price tag !
The example on offer was first registered in 1977 and is owned by its second custodian since the importing dealer in December 1976. It must be one of a kind, as it has covered less than 36,000 miles and still has the original manuals and sales brochures in the glovebox. The car’s history shows that it was used from new for twelve years and then placed in storage in 1989. The current owner, a true Renault aficionado acquired this gem in 2014 and has spent the last few years recommissioning it to its current splendid condition.
Very little work was needed, but the brakes were completely overhauled, wheels refurbished and all mechanicals checked over. The stunning interior and red paintwork remain in excellent original condition giving the car a real ‘timewarp’ feel. Supplied new with automatic transmission, the result is a car that looks great, sounds great, will go faster than you need and could well be the most comfortable classic on four wheels.
Being one of just a handful of 30TS’ still in existence, it was the subject of a feature in Classic Cars magazine this autumn. With classic French styling, purring V6 power and oozing 1970s retro charm, this is an opportunity not to be missed by any serious Renault fan.

Beaulieu, National Motor Museum

1964 Renault 8 Gordini Sports Saloon
Registration no. RCA 155B
Chassis no. 501137

•One of the fastest small sports saloons of its day
•Restored in 2017
•Engine and transmission rebuilt

Footnotes

  • As Carlo Abarth was to FIAT and John Cooper to BMC, so Amédee Gordini was to Renault. Since the 1950s, Amédee Gordini, known as 'Le Sorcier' for his almost magical ability to extract high power outputs from engines (particularly of small capacity), has been synonymous with performance versions of Renault saloons. Gordini's alliance with Renault commenced in 1957, and in the late 1950s/early 1960s his competition-tuned Dauphines did exceptionally well in many forms of motorsport. Their rallying victories were numerous, and indeed, a Dauphine was the first car ever to win outright the three most important rallies of the day: the Tulip Rally (1957), the Monte Carlo Rally (1958), and the Alpine Rally (1959) while also enjoying considerable great success on the racetrack.
Things stepped up a gear on the rallying front with the introduction in 1962 of the new Renault 8, which shared the Dauphine's rear-engined layout but used a new family of more tuneable engines. Extensively modified by Gordini, they produced 95bhp (1,108cc) and 105bhp (1,255cc), the latter being used from 1966.

The works rally team achieved several good results at international level, but this was the era of the Mini Cooper and outright victories proved hard to achieve, although an R8 Gordini won the Tour de Corse on its first outing. In road trim, though, the Renault 8 Gordini was actually more powerful and faster than the 1,275cc Cooper S. A little over 12,000 Renault 8 Gordinis were produced between 1964 and 1970, and today they are among the most sought-after of post-war French performance cars.

This Renault 8 Gordini benefits from a restoration undertaken in 2017 by Autovilla Classica of Twickenham, with additional input from various other specialists, and comes with their detailed invoice for £27,150. Works carried out included a body renovation (sills, inner sills, front inner wings, and right rear wing replaced); repaint inside and out; interior re-trim (using five black leather hides); and an engine rebuild by Modern & Classic Engineers. In addition, a 5th gear has been fitted inside the original gearbox, while the interior has been up-rated with two sports-type bucket seats upfront. Only recently rebuilt, both the engine and transmission will require running in. Described as in excellent condition, with concours standard bodywork and paint, this exciting French sports saloon is offered with old Norwegian registration papers, details of its owners in Norway and Sweden, and a V5C Registration Certificate.
