1993 VOLKSWAGEN GOLF GTi MkI SPORTLINE - COYS AUCTIONEERS Spring Classics Sale Royal Horticultural Society, Lindley Hall, Vincent Square Westminster, London, SW1P 2PE Tuesday 2nd April 2019

FEATURED AUCTION

COYS AUCTIONEERS
Spring Classics Sale

Tuesday 2nd April 2019

1993 VOLKSWAGEN GOLF GTi MkI SPORTLINE
Estimate: £7000 - £9000

The Golf GTI Sportline was a runout model of the legendary Mk1 GTI, the car that first introduced us to hot hatches. Introduced in 1975, VW soon decided to transform the Golf into a sports orientated vehicle. Many people regarded this car to be the first “hot hatch”, with its reliability, outstanding build quality, and usability.
The Mk1 Cabriolet was of unibody construction and was built entirely at the factory of German Coachbuilder, Karmann. It was first seen for sale in 1980 with a manual convertible roof. Later to be introduced was the electric folding soft-top along with heated glass in 1991. Before 1984 the highest specification would’ve been the GLI. After this, with the new model Golf convertible, VW introduced the GTI variant, which became the highest specification.
The Sportline took the already sought after GTI and enhanced it further with Flash Red, Black, or Jasmine Yellow paint, Recaro seats finished in black and red, black BBS RA wheels, and a convertible roof. With its sub 10 second 0-60mph time and a top speed of 108mph, the Sportline let us know that this car was no ordinary Golf convertible. The Sportline was a very rare model with only around 400 produced and just over 200 left today.

An absolutely breath-taking example of this desirable early Golf GTi Sportline, offered with an astonishing 18 stamps in the service book and showing few signs of its age. Presented in Flash Red with the original BBS wheels at each corner and with the original interior showing little sign of wear, this Sportline would be an excellent summer companion.
