1991 AUDI QUATTRO 20v
Registration No:H199VWY
Chassis No:WAUZZZ85ZMA000151
MOT:August 2020

- One owner and 32,000 miles from new

- Offered with 'full-service history', MOT until August 2020, history file etc.

- Comprehensive spares package includes wheels, tyres, radiator, etc.

Finding any car that is nearing three decades old with a 'full-service history' is rare. Discovering one that has had a single owner, has a warranted 32,000 miles from new and remains - in the vendor's words - in excellent condition and totally original throughout is an extraordinary find.

This is one such car, plus it is one of the most exciting road models of that era in arguably the best colour combination. Back in 1991 when this Audi Quattro 20V was built, the model was already legendary thanks to its early 1980s dominance of the competitive rally scene. Hannu Mikkola, Stig Blomqvist, Walter R÷hrl and others delivered two World Rally Championship (WRC) wins and 23 major rally victories and ensured posters of this motoring icon would adorn teenage boys' bedrooms throughout the 1980s and '90s.

The road-going models, these days are often known as the Ur (or 'original') Quattro, had by 1991 morphed into its most potent form. The 2,226cc inline five-cylinder double overhead cam 'RR' engine had gained four valves per cylinder in 1989, generating a healthy 217hp. The Quattro's famous continuous four-wheel drive, five-speed transaxle and independent front and rear suspension helped put this power down on the road, enabling a top speed of 143mph and 0-60mph in a blistering 6.5 seconds. Even the turbo, once a weakness, had been uprated with a water-cooled version to improve reliability.

This Quattro 20V in metallic pearl white was first registered on 28th March 1991 when it was collected by the vendor, its first and only owner who was a professor in Yorkshire. One of the final original Quattros (the last left the factory in May 1991), it was supplied by Trust Motors in Leeds who also carried out the first few services. The car was subsequently serviced annually by Independent VW-Audi Centre until 2016 at 32,221 miles, then in August 2019 at 32,252 when it received an MOT valid until 4th August 2020. The car comes with its Audi wallet including service books, manual, press cuttings, brochures, magazine articles, a VHS tape and even a pack of Audi cards and a bottle opener! A large spares package including new tyres, wheels and a radiator complements the car.

The paint and bodywork are both described by the vendor as being in excellent condition, and all original decals - from side pinstriping to the iconic Audi roundels on the doors - remain seemingly untouched. The rear screen, including 'Quattro' script in the heating element, even has a 1994 Le Mans sticker, a reminder of a trip to the famous Circuit de La Sarthe. The white spoke alloys wheels, including a full-size spare, also remain in remarkable condition.

Inside, the car is a time warp. The silver-grey leather seats, orange LCD dash, Pioneer stereo and hand-held fire extinguisher are all very reminiscent of the era and the vendor tells us it is all in excellent condition.

With values of Ur-Quattros having soared in recent years, the chance to buy an original, metallic pearl white, one-owner 20V with superb provenance in 'excellent' condition throughout is an extraordinary prospect and one that will attract much attention. Surely one of the highlights of this autumn's auction scene, early viewing is advised.

1990 AUDI RR QUATTRO TURBO 20v -SILVERSTONE AUCTIONS

COMING TO AUCTION
Brought to you by CLASSIC CHATTER

Classic Chatter is an independent website for owners& enthusiasts of all types of historic vehicles.

1990 AUDI RR QUATTRO TURBO 20v

Registration: G866 NHL
Chassis Number: WAUZZZ85ZLA000668, Engine Number: RR001519
Number of cylinders: 5  CC: 2100cc
Estimate (£): 60,000 - 70,000

The Audi 'Quattro' presented at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1980 represented a quantum leap in the repositioning of the Audi brand with their mission statement "Vorsprung durch Technik" having been applied literally. A new 20-valve engine was introduced in 1989 and with it, the Quattro became the last series production model to be given a controlled catalytic converter. After 11,452 Quattro cars had been built, production of the longest built Audi model ceased on 17 May 1991.
This 20-valve Audi Quattro RR Turbo was supplied new to the UK by Audi and VW main agent Gilders of Sheffield on 25th April 1990. The first owner was a Mr M.Chappell and amongst the factory options he selected were heated seats, central locking, ABS, larger alternator, electric windows, ‘Quattro' design interior, and Chrystal Metallic Silver bodywork. Despite an ownership change to his business and then back to him personally, this is effectively a one owner from new Audi Quattro.
The original service book shows evidence of regular service intervals and the car was last serviced by Audi specialists Swift Performance of Sheffield in April 2016. The service book, some invoices and a good number of previous MoT certificates substantiate a total mileage of a mere 16,231 miles.
As one would expect for such a low mileage example, this Quattro is in show condition and is the best example we have ever seen. The paint is in fine order and the shut lines are superb. The engine bay is extremely clean and shows no signs of modifications with factory correct finishes, stickers, and fittings. The interior is in very good condition and is completely original.
Finding an original 20v Quattro is hard enough in the current marketplace, but one showing just 16,231 miles is a truly special proposition. With BMW E30 M3s and Mercedes-Benz Evo models hitting new heights in recent years, it seems that the humble Quattro will inevitably follow in their footsteps. With world rally winning pedigree and a growing cult status, the demand for low-mileage Quattros is surely going to increase for many years to come.
We encourage pre-sale inspections and prospective bidders should contact the office for further information on this true ‘best-of-breed' example. Your chance to relive the glorious 1980s in ‘the' car of its era!

THE GOODWOOD FESTIVAL OF SPEED SALE

1986 Audi Quattro Sport SWB Coupé Chassis no. WAUZZZ85ZEA905206

1986 AUDI QUATTRO SPORT SWB COUPÉ

Registration no. C541 MGN       Chassis no. WAUZZZ85ZEA905206

  • One of the most influential designs of recent decades, the Audi Quattro brought four-wheel drive into the motoring mainstream. Introduced in 1980, the Quattro was based on the outwardly similar Coupé's bodyshell but used a different floor pan to accommodate its four-wheel-drive transmission and independent rear suspension. The engine was a development of the five-cylinder, 2.1-litre, single-overhead-camshaft unit first seen in the 200 saloon. Equipped with a KKK turbocharger, it produced 200bhp in road trim with considerably more available in competition tune. Phenomenally fast and sure-footed on the road, the Quattro excelled in international rallying, winning the Manufacturers' Championship for Audi in 1982 and 1984 and the Driver's Championship in '83 and '84, but its enduring legacy would be the demonstration of four-wheel drive's advantages for passenger cars. Since then Audi has gone on to apply its quattro 4WD system to many other models but only the original (or 'Ur') version is spelled with a capital 'Q'.

The Sport version of Audi's sensational Quattro was launched in the autumn of 1983, three years after the original's unveiling at the Geneva Salon had taken the motoring world by storm. It had a shortened wheelbase and was fitted with a new, lighter version of the five-cylinder engine boasting an aluminium block and a twin-cam 20-valve cylinder head, while anti-lock braking made its first appearance on a Quattro-equipped Audi. Running on Bosch HI-Jetronic fuel injection, the extensively revised engine developed a claimed 306bhp and gave this quite remarkable road car a top speed of around 155mph. Audi built only 214 examples of the Sport, though only 164 were actually sold to customers.

This particular Audi Quattro Sport was imported into the UK in March 1990 and registered to Mr M D Lindup of London SW20. The car passed to the current owner in September 1993 and is one of a pair of Sport Quattros he owns; the other resides in North America. It has thus been with its current owner for 22 years, covering fewer than 3,000 kilometres since acquisition. This car is a superb example of the Sport Quattro, in very good original condition and the best colour scheme in terms of the model's rallying pedigree.

The accompanying service book was stamped at the supplying dealer on 4th April 1986 and next by GTi Engineering on 26th April 1991 (at 36,870 kilometres) followed by Scotts Audi, London on four occasions between May 1997 (50,408kms) and July 2000 (52,578kms). Since then the car has been 'Carcooned' in a West London basement garage, started frequently using fresh fuel and run up to temperature but not driven on the road. The current odometer reading is 52,934 kilometres (approximately 32,900 miles).

'C541 MGN' is presently with AM Cars in Ilminster for a service, re-commissioning, MoT test, etc (see bill on file). Representing a rare opportunity to own a piece of Audi's rallying history, this ultra-rare Quattro Sport is offered with the aforementioned service book, handbook (in German), owner's plastic wallet, V5C registration document and a quantity of expired MoT certificates.
