1995 MITSUBISHI 3000 GT SPYDER

ESTIMATE €30,000- €35,000

The Mitsubishi 3000 GT was produced from 1992 to 1999, at a time where the rise of multiple Japanese supercars was very apparent. From the rotary-powered Mazda RX-7 to the legendary Nissan Skyline GT-R, there was no shortage of technologically advanced coupes with supercar beating capabilities. A combination of powerful turbocharged engines and previously unseen technological improvements made these vehicles appealing to a wide audience, at the fraction of the cost of a traditional supercar. The Mitsubishi 3000 GT was one of a handful of production vehicles that was instrumental in influencing the improved mechanisation of cars in the years that followed. For instance, features such as active aerodynamics and an all-wheel-drive system came as standard in the 3000 GT

Despite the complex hardware causing the 3000 GT to weigh in at over 1700 kg, acceleration from 0-60 mph was claimed to take just 5.5 seconds. In addition to this, the vehicle offered great long-distance touring capabilities and boasted rear high-speed stability and grip, partly as a result of a wide rear spoiler. Owners of these cars are said to appreciate the impressive straight-line performance and lavish interior.
The example offered today is the rarest variant- the 3000 GT Spyder- and there are very few known examples in Europe in particular. This is because the company named ASC (American Sunroof Corporation) carried out the conversions on regular coupes by using an automatic folding roof, similarly to Mercedes for the SLK a few years later. The vendor describes the vehicle as being very good mechanically, with a few cosmetic blemishes on the folding roof. As both a Japanese sports icon and a usable weekend toy, this represents an opportunity to buy a cult convertible which is ready to drive immediately.

1957 MERCEDES-BENZ 220S CABRIOLET - COYS AUCTIONS 10-10-15

1957 MERCEDES-BENZ 220S CABRIOLET

Right Hand Drive - One of 20 Produced

Estimate: £28,000 - £38,000
Registration Number: 167 EVJ
Chassis Number: 180030-75-06195
It is not always appreciated what a stir Mercedes-Benz road cars made in the 1950s. Leaving aside such obvious stars as the 300SL 'Gullwing', there were headlines like 'Magnificent Mercedes' when a new saloon came out. It is not hard to see why: the company introduced new levels of build quality to even its most mundane models.
Take the 220S, here was a discreetly styled saloon with a top speed of 100mph – when it was introduced in 1956, 100mph was beyond some sports cars. It was superbly assembled at a time when most saloons were of dubious quality and it had such features as servo-assisted brakes and an overhead camshaft engine.
It also basked in the reflected glory of Mercedes-Benz's legendary return to Grand Prix racing in 1954 (Fangio won back-to-back World Championships) and it's winning of the 1955 World Sports Car Championship. The kudos which surrounded the model range cannot be understated especially since Mercedes-Benz insisted on direct correlations between its road cars and competition cars.

With the cars it introduced in the 1950s, Mercedes-Benz began to move to its present market niche. It was a decision which paid off as Mercedes-Benz has become an extraordinarily successful company on the back of matchless engineering and build quality. The 220S is part of that tradition and remains one of the most desirable motorcars of its day.
At the top of the range was the S Cabriolet, a stylish and graceful tourer, of which this is a fine example. 167 EVJ is particularly unusual in being one of just a handful of original right-hand drive examples built and it is believed out of the original 20 produced only 8 remain. 167 EVJ was first registered on the 15th July 1957 and has had 3 owners since with the current owner purchasing the car on the 22nd May 1973 for £500; the bill of sale is included in the file.
During the vendors ownership 167 EVJ has been loved and cherished throughout and is supplied with original instruction manual and sales brochure along with various bills and receipts from specialists such as Werner Karasch and Company, a UK V5 and a copy of the build sheets.
With long term ownership of over 40 years; accompanied with a comprehensive history file and being one of a handful of cars remaining, this drophead aptly reflects the chic of the 1950s.

1959 FIAT MULTIPLA ABARTH - Coys Auction, Nurburgring 08/08/15

Nurburgring
169 - 1959 Fiat Multipla Abarth
1959 FIAT MULTIPLA ABARTH

Estimate: €30,000 - €40,000
Registration Number: EU Taxes Paid
Chassis Number: 54054
It is widely believed that the Fiat 500 was Fiat's first rear-engined post-war people's car, but it was, in fact, predated by the 600 or Seicento. Produced from 1955 to 1969, it measured only 321cm in length but could still accommodate four people and their luggage. It was such a success in post-war Italy that some 2.6 million were built at Fiat's Mirafiori plant. The 600's popularity was not, however, confined to Italy alone, as a wide range of countries, from Russia to Argentina, built the car under licence. Power came from a water-cooled four cylinder motor which was able to propel the little Fiat to 59mph with the 633cc engine or even to 68mph with the later 767cc variant.
A year after the 600's debut, the Multipla was introduced; based on the same mechanical components but with the front suspension from the bigger Fiat 1100, it was nothing less than the first people carrier, and could seat six despite being only 50cm longer than the Austin Mini! Not surprisingly it was widely used as a taxi in its native Italy.
This very special Multipla was in ownership at a Fiat-Abarth dealer who used it for dealer marketing comunication. Its engine has been updated with the Abarth kit available at the time, consisting of special exhaust, Abarth dashboard, increased oil sump, special cammes, and a Dell'Orto carburator. In the 2000s it was fitted also with 124 Abarth wheels.
This car has been recently restored in the body, interior, and mechanically it is in wonderful condition. It now runs like brand new, and photographs documenting the car's restoration can be found in the car's file.

1967 FORD MUSTANG SHELBY GT500 - Coys Auction Nurburgring 08/08/15

GRIFF'S AUCTION PICK
FROM
Nurburgring
144 - 1967 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500

1967 FORD MUSTANG SHELBY GT500

Estimate: €100,000 - €130,000

Registration Number: Czech Republic Registered
Chassis Number: 67402F2A01323
This is perhaps the most documented, unique and collectable Ford Mustang existing today. With known history and ownership dating back to its original order at the Ford dealership in California on 15th November 1966, to its release on 16th January 1967 and the build date of 31st January 1967. This GT500 is registered in the “Shelby World Registry 1997” on pages 653 and 727 and “SAAC Shelby Registry 2011” on pages 827 and 983. The production sheet for the #01323 was marked “Pica Rivera inventory”. Chassis #01323 was sold on 13th October 1967 by Holiday Ford to its first owner, Patrick D. Carle from Mountain View, California. Patrick drove the Shelby as a “normal” car until 1974, when he decided to transform chassis #01323 into a competition car, so he got a racing license for the B/P- Class (B-Production). As a GT500, he would have to drive in the Trans AM class, but the rivalry was too great there.
The 428 PI engine was replaced by a 289, the roll cage modified, a reinforcement welded on the frame, a new racing exhaust pipe mounted, etc. In the end the car was an official GT350 prepared for racing. Patrick stored all the disassembled parts, all of which were reused for the later renovation, with the exception of the engine, gearbox, spring suspension and differential gear stick.
After all the necessary transformations, the license from SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) was granted. The original blue colour was changed to orange. Patrick registered his “GT350 #01323” at SCCA driving school in Sears Point in March 1974. The Shelby received a logbook with identification number 33-704. The logbook shows more records and it accompanied the Shelby through its entire racing career. The races were held in 1974, 1975 and 1976 at Sears Point and Laguna Seca. Unfortunately, four pages are missing from the original logbook, so it's impossible to specify when the last race was held. The SCCA logbook shows two black and white photos from 1974.
Patrick sold the “GT350” and all parts to Jerry Lecatsas, who had lent him the Cougar for the SCCA in 1974 and also sponsored him. Jerry, who also lived in Hayward, was (and still is) a Mustang/Shelby enthusiast. His Shelby experience goes back to the sixties. The car subsequently passed hands a few hands before being purchased by the cars current vendor on the 19th September 2005.
The odometer shows 74,000 miles, which is believed to be accurate. The car was painted with the original color “Nightmist Blue” in 1991, and carries a charming original patina. Chassis #01323 is said to start and run perfectly. As for the engine, the differential from 1975 with a gear ratio of 4.79:1 is changed to the original with the gear ratio of 3.50:1.
This Shelby GT500 has its own, interesting story to be told, granting a mystical past and character. According to the contemporary state of knowledge, the GT500 is the only one to have a SCCA logbook. It also oozes a certain charm, 4-speed top loader, centre lights and an incredible colour, which makes any admirer's heart beat faster, wherever it is seen.

1955 Mercedes-Benz 220 A Ponton by Pollmann of Germany - Barn find Coys Auctions

A255_online.jpg

We hope you are enjoying the show season even although the weather is so unpredictable at the moment. So today we are looking ahead to those long Winter months when we have the chance to potter about in the garage or even to take on a restoration project, with that in mind, our choice today will be up for grabs at Coys next sale.

110 - 1955 Mercedes-Benz 220 A Ponton by Pollmann of Germany - Barn find -

1955 Mercedes-Benz 220 A Ponton

by Pollmann of Germany - Barn find

Estimate: No Reserve
Registration Number: German Registered
Chassis Number: 180010-5503745
This Mercedes Ponton is indeed a very rare find. Being a break (or KOMBI in German), it is one of only eleven such cars built; this one is by Coachbuilder Pollmann of Bremen, who still exist today. Pollmann Coachbuilders received a long wheelbase chassis from the Mercedes works in 1955, which boasted the well proven 6-cylinder engine, providing 2,195cc and 84 HP, giving a sensational top speed of 160 km/h. The car has had only two owners in sixty years. The car was registered to its first owner in Hamburg on 5th April 1955, who kept it until 11th March 1966, when it was sold to the second owner who used it until 1st July 1976, at which time it was put into long time storage until its recent discovery.
Moreover, this very car is shown in the Mercedes book, Das große Ponton Buch, on a double-page spread (pp. 76-77) showing its first number plate of HH-CZ 3 –exactly the same as in its log book of 1955.

1981 ROVER 3500 SD1 VANDEN PLAS - COYS AUCTION 11/07/15

COMING  TO AUCTION
FROM

SATURDAY 11th JULY 2015
BLENHEIM PALACE, WOODSTOCK, OXFORD

TODAY IS OUR FINAL LOT FROM THIS SALE, WE HOPE YOU AGREE WITH OUR CHOICES OVER THE PAST FEW DAYS. AS OUR FINAL CHOICE WE  HAVE CHOSEN

1981 ROVER 3500 SD1 VANDEN PLAS

102 - 1981 Rover 3500 SD1 Vanden Plas

Estimate: £8,000 - £12,000
Registration Number: SRJ 730X
Chassis Number: RRMWV3BA161420
Examples such as this 1981 Vanden Plas come so rarely to market. The original owner paid £13,000 and, being a Vanden Plas, the car came loaded with the full spectrum of the Rover option lists: central locking; electric sunroof; cruise control; alloy wheels; extra chrome trim and more. Finished in Pharaoh Gold, the owner's wife disliked leather and thus the interior was trimmed in a special order grey velour. Disappointed with the part exchange values offered by main dealers at the time, in 1981 and having covered just 13,000 miles, the owner drained the fluids and put it up on blocks, where it remained, sheathed in a protective cover, until the end of last year.
Jack Grover of Car and Classic Magazine did a road test on this particular SD1 in February 2014, and his comments offer apt testament: “This is, effectively, an 11-month old Rover SD 1. This means that this is in many ways not a road test of a classic, but of a brand new car.“Opening the door the immediate impression is how new everything feels and smells. There is none of the dusty odours of a well-worn car interior, just the lingering whiff of fresh plastic and glue. The seats and carpets still feel crisp and the acres of chocolate brown soft touch plastic are unfaded... “Given the Rover's wide-ranging design I was wondering what sort of driving character it would have – sporty or luxurious? The answer is an amazing blend of the two. The quality of the ride is probably the best I have experienced on a classic car. In terms of bump absorption and smoothness it's on a par with a hydro-pneumatic Citroën, but it totally lacks the wallow and float that is a characteristic of such cars.
“I feel very fortunate to drive it as it provides such a perfect way to see the SD1 at its best, a world-beating piece of automotive design.” This unique SD1 is offered with UK V5 registration papers and an MoT valid until June 2016.

1958 ASTON MARTIN DB Mk III
Coachwork by TICKFORD
One Owner for Three Decades

180 - 1958 Aston Martin DB MkIII Sports Saloon Coachwork by Tickford One o

Estimate: £40,000 - £50,000
Registration Number: KJX 711
Chassis Number: AM300/3/1821
Although it never featured in a James Bond film, production having ceased years before the franchise commenced, the DB MkIII nevertheless was the Aston Martin driven by '007' in Ian Fleming's Goldfinger. It was also the last Aston Martin produced with the W O Bentley-designed six-cylinder engine. Two years after the introduction of the DB2/4 MkII came the DB MkIII – the '2/4' suffix being dropped – 551 of which, mainly saloons, were made between March 1957 and July 1959, 55 percent of which were exported.
Externally the most obvious change was the adoption of a DB3S-style grille, establishing the 'hallmark' look of subsequent Aston Martins, which had been drawn up by Tickford designer Bert Thickpenny. This restyled nose gives the car a more imposing look, while the interior boasted a redesigned dashboard with instruments grouped in a cowled panel ahead of the driver.
The 3.0-litre engine benefited from an extensive redesign by Tadek Marek (newly arrived from Austin) and featured, among other improvements, a stiffer block, stronger crankshaft and a new cylinder head with bigger valves. 162bhp was available with the single-pipe exhaust system; 178bhp with the optional twin-pipe version.
Elsewhere there were improvements to both clutch and gearbox: Laycock overdrive became available and front disc brakes were standard rather than optional after the first 100 cars had been built, commencing at chassis no. 1401.
Despite the inevitable weight increase, the MkIII was faster than any of its predecessors, with a top speed of 120mph.
Registered new on 28th April 1959 and finished in red with cream interior, the wonderful Aston Martin DB Mk III on offer today has recently been discovered in Derbyshire by Coys specialists.

Purchased by the vendor in 1984, the car was used on an everyday basis. Due to work commitments, it was then put into long term storage and has not moved since its recent discovery. We are informed that the engine and gearbox performed beautifully before the car went into long term storage.

1989 MASERTI KARIF - Coys Auctions 11/07/15

COMING TO AUCTION
SATURDAY 11th JULY 2015
BLENHEIM PALACE, WOODSTOCK, OXFORDSHIRE OX20 1PX

198 - 1989 Maserati Karif

1989 MASERTI KARIF
Estimate: £9,000 - £11,000

Registration Number: B3 PGP
Chassis Number: ZAM339B00 KA190009
The Maserati Karif (Tipo 339) is a luxury coupé produced by Maserati between 1988 and 1993. It was designed to be luxurious, but also sporty and agile enough to allow the driver to 'feel like a racing driver again, or for the first time'. At the car's unveiling, Alejandro de Tomaso declared a very limited production run of 250 examples.
In a throwback to Maserati's earlier naming practices for two-seater GTs, the car was named after the wind called 'Karif', which blows South West across the Gulf of Aden at Berbera, Somalia. The Karif was built on the same shortened chassis as the Zagato-bodied Maserati Spyder model, adding a fixed notchback coupé roof. It used the most powerful Maserati Biturbo engine: the AM473, a 2.8-litre 90° V6 engine with 3 valves per cylinder, producing 285bhp at 5,500rpm. According to Maserati the Karif could reach 60mph from a standstill in 4.8 seconds, and achieve a top speed of over 158mph.
Maserative Karifs are exceptionally rare; only 222 were ever built, with only twenty-five in right drive form. This car, chassis number 9, has covered a mere 38,500 miles from new, and was rustproofed from new by Dinol-Protectol.
The Karif has spent the last year in a small collection of Ferrari and Maseratis, during which time is has benefitted from a refurbished brake callipers, remanufactured wheels, and new tyres.Offered with a service book, history file, and current MoT, the Karif offers Ferrari beating performance, while being discreet in style. The perfect car for the discerning collector.
