2001 ROVER MINI COOPER SPORT 500

Following Rover’s decision to end the “Classic” range of Minis, the manufacturer decided to offer the British market a limited-edition Mini Cooper Sport 500. Production was limited to just 500 cars, and the offering and was billed as the last chance to purchase Alec Issigonis’ classic Mini design, with the newer BMW-made Mini soon to break cover. These models were manufactured in 2000 and based on the Mini Classic Cooper Sport, but featured various extras.

All Cooper Sport 500s were powered by the four-cylinder, 1.2-litre engine that was rated at 62 horsepower. They could be painted in one of four optional colours: Tahiti Blue, Anthracite, British Racing Green, or Solar Red. All models came with 13-inch alloy wheels with a Platinum Silver roof and bonnet stripes. Included as special extras in these models were a high-level brake light, four spot lamps, a certificate, and a plaque inside the glove box. Inside all Cooper Sport 500s, the seats, door cards, steering wheel and dashboard were upholstered in black and silver leather. The interior fittings for this model were alloy instead of the standard plastic and included an alloy gear knob, window winders, dashboard, door pulls, and door handles.

This example is finished in Solar Red with a Platinum Silver roof, is believed to be one of only 110 produced this colour combination. It was registered on 3 May 2001 and purchased new by its sole owner via Caffyns of East Sussex, England. A copy of the original sales invoice will accompany the vehicle. Inside, the seats are upholstered in black and silver leather, the carpets are trimmed in black, and the car retains the original alloy fittings. Having been kept on display at the Cayman Islands Motor Museum until recently, this example bears just six miles on its odometer at time of cataloguing.

This Cooper Sport 500 is accompanied by the owner’s handbook, European directory, service portfolio and in-car entertainment booklet, all stored in the factory leather folder. It presents a wonderful opportunity to purchase a one-owner-from-new model with only “delivery miles”.

The Austin Maestro was produced from 1982 to 1987 by British Leyland, and from 1988 until 1994 by Rover Group. The car was produced at Morris' former Oxford plant, also known as Cowley. Today, the redeveloped factory produces the BMW Mini.
Supplied new by Henlys’ of Andover on 3rd August 1986 and having only four owners since this plucky Austin Maestro camper has been garage-stored and is described by our vendor as extremely solid and remaining exceptionally original throughout. The bodywork is very good indeed with superb panel gaps, hinges and door shuts. It is notably Waxoyl protected and the engine bay clean and sharp with solid inner wings. The measure of a good camper is the interior, a department where this little countryman excels. The cushions are trimmed in the original material and have been re-padded. The watertight roof ensures that the car is damp-free and dry and, with built-in gas stove, this portable studio apartment is ready for camping fun or for display at car shows and events. The history file contains its Austin Rover owner’s wallet complete with owner’s manuals and, most importantly, a stamped service history booklet. Recently serviced and supplied with a new MOT certificate, it is not often that you see a Countryman Maestro in this order. It is original and, according to our vendor, drives really well. It must be seen and inspected to appreciate the condition of this little, self-contained living space on wheels
.

Charming and regularly used example of this 60's six-cylinder British saloon; lovely blue leather interior; 4-speed with O/D; completed the Tour De Normandy in 2018
Declared manufactured in 1962, it looks like this tidy old P4 100 was imported into Britain in 1978 and has had six owners since then. Our vendor acquired the car in January 2012 and has enjoyed using the car during the summer months, doing a few weddings for friends and family in this time.
The car is finished in Old English White, Experian recording a colour change from grey to white in January of 2012. The interior has that wonderful ‘old car’ smell emanating from its beautifully patinated blue leather combined with the fine thin-rimmed steering wheel, wooden dash and ‘R’ monikered foot pedals.
The car shows 74, 830 miles and started first turn of the key at the time of our visit, the big old six pot humming away quietly. Transmission is through a four-speed manual gearbox with O/D.
The bodywork looks to be in sound order with some localised remediation carried out by our vendor during his tenure, including repairs to the inner rear wheel arches, fitment of a new brake servo, pads and master cylinder plus a pair of reconditioned front brake callipers and fuel pump too.
He has taken the car abroad to Northern France on a number of occasions without issue, the car recently completing the Tour Du Normandy in 2018 during which time it won a prize as well as attending the Retro Festival in Caen in 2017.
It is being sold with a workshop manual, V5C, a sheaf of bills and 10 old MOTs plus its recent MOT which runs until January 2021 showing only two minor advisories.

  • What would eventually become the Rover company began by manufacturing one of the landmark designs in the history of human transportation: John Kemp Starley's 'Safety Bicycle'. The firm's first venture into powered transportation came in 1888 with an electric tricycle but it would be another 16 years, by which time its founder J K Starley had died, before the Rover Cycle Company began experimenting with the internal combustion engine. Designer Edmund Lewis was recruited from Daimler and drew up Rover's first series-production automobile, an 8hp single-cylinder with aluminium backbone frame, an adventurous design that despite its shortcomings remained in production until 1912.

    Lewis followed up with a more conventional 6hp model, which earned itself the distinction of being Rover's first entered in any competition, in this case the Bexhill Speed Trials of 1902. Before his departure for Siddeley-Deasy, Lewis bequeathed another significant design, the 16/20hp, winner of the 1907 Isle of Man Tourist Trophy race for Rover. After an undistinguished flirtation with the Knight sleeve-valve engine, Rover hired ex-Wolseley engineer Owen Clegg, who reorganised production and put the company back on track with a conventional poppet-valve engined car, the 12hp. Powered by a 2.3-litre four featuring pumped lubrication (for the first time on a Rover) the 'Clegg Twelve' was the sole model in the range by 1912 and would remain in production into the 1920s.

    Although a 1914 model, this restored Rover Twelve was not first registered until March 1921, this being shortly after the introduction of the Roads Act of 1920, which required local councils to register all vehicles at the time of licensing and to allocate a separate number to each. (Many vehicles, although in existence for several years in some cases, were only registered for the first time after the Act's passing).

    Benefiting from renovation work carried out by the renowned Jim Stokes Workshop, the car is described by the private vendor as in excellent condition and running beautifully. Fully laden, it attended the Goodwood Revival Meeting on 14th September 2019 – a very hot day – without encountering any problems. Finished in coffee/cream with brown leather interior, this charming 'Edwardian' Rover is offered with VCC Dating Certificate, sundry invoices, some expired MoTs, and a V5C registration document. The sensible provision of an electric starter, operated by a discreetly concealed button, is the only notified deviation from factory specification.
