1980 ASTON MARTIN LAGONDA - COYS AUCTIONS Fontwell House Sale Chichester Thursday 12th September 2019

FEATURED AUCTION

1980 ASTON MARTIN LAGONDA
Chassis No: L00R13050

The launch of the Aston Martin Lagonda at Aston Clinton in October 1976 marked a return of the Lagonda name which had remained largely dormant since the Rapide model ceased production in 1964.
The new Lagonda’s platform chassis used the V8’s suspension, although now self-levelling. Brakes were ventilated discs all round, mounted inboard at the back, while the 5,340cc four camshafts alloy V8 engine, mated to a three-speed automatic transmission, produced 280bhp at 5,000rpm via quadruple Weber carburettors – sufficient for 148mph and 0-60mph in 7.9 seconds, making the Lagonda the fastest four-door saloon in the world.

It was the futuristic, aerodynamic, aluminium coachwork, however, that was a radical departure with its sleek, sharp and straight-edged lines. Inside, too, the design was radical, with advanced digital, cathode-ray tube instrumentation with electronic push-button switchgear.
Throughout the history of the marque, these hand-built Lagondas were amongst the most expensive saloons in the world. The only other “production” cars to approach its lofty price tag were the Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit/Silver Spur and Bentley Mulsanne.

The example on sale today has been stored since 2001, it is complete with no missing parts, and the engine was recently started by an Aston Martin Specialist, with good compression noted. In good condition Lagondas fetching over £70,000, this project is a rare opportunity for an Aston Martin enthusiast, with the potential to turn a healthy profit.

FEATURED AUCTION

H&H AUCTIONS
WEDNESDAY 20th MARCH 2019
Imperial War Museum, Duxford
Cambridgeshire, CB22 4QR

1969 BURLINGTON ARROW
Registration No:VHZ 8126
Chassis No:HC53302DL

- Triumph 2-litre straight six engine

- Fitted with Bentley radiator shell and bonnet

- Freshly repainted with the interior retrimmed

Further info:

The Burlington Arrow was the brainchild of the Burlington Motor Company's Haydn Davies who, for a modest fee, would supply a set of plans from which enthusiasts could manufacture a cycle-winged two-seat sports car to their own taste. Later versions of the papers presumed the use of a Triumph Spitfire, GT6 or Spitfire Vitesse chassis and for the body to be built from marine plywood. Some 6000 sets of plans were purchased and an estimated 500 cars created. This splendid-looking example is based on a 1969 Triumph Vitesse 2.0-litre and has recently been lovingly reconstructed by the vendor and finished off with a fresh repaint and interior retrim. The plywood tub is encased in aluminium below its fabric outer surface, while the wings are formed from fibreglass and the radiator shell and steel bonnet are ex-Bentley parts. Aero screens, engine-turned facia and a running board-mounted toolbox all add to the period look, and the stainless steel exhaust is said to optimise the sound of the straight-six engine.

This interesting four-seat tourer was manufactured in France by automobile engineer Jouffret, who invented the Solex carburettor and was the designer of the Peugeot aircraft engine.
The model was powered by the well-known four-cylinder 1593cc Ballot Type 405 engine, coupled to a four-speed gearbox and straight bevel rear axle. The road springs were all-around semi-elliptic - with the front springs tapered towards the front which was apparently an advantage. The brakes were Perrot-type, used also on W.O. Bentley.
The sole concessionaires for the entire United Kingdom were C.F. Rymer Ltd of Liverpool and the Jouffret was produced only from 1921 until 1928. It is understood that this example is the only survivor - an antique motor car in the truest sense of the word.
BF 7006 was purchased in 1975 as a restoration project from Mike Carter of Penny Wise Motoring fame. The project was relatively complete, except for the headlamps and hood, and cost £715. An interesting and amusing account of the purchase was documented in The Automobile in May and September 2001: apparently, the Jouffret was discovered in a French monastery and naturally, rather a large amount of wine was involved.
A body-off, nut-and-bolt restoration was carried out by the current custodian. The engine was reconditioned and fitted with new pistons, camshaft, timing chains, guide and sprockets by specialist Thomas Hamlin and Co of Bridgwater at a cost of £9500. We are informed that the gearbox and rear axle were also overhauled, as were the steering and braking systems. A new wiring loom has been fitted and all mechanical and electrical components checked and restored as required before refitting. The coachwork was rebuilt, painted and refitted to the chassis and the upholstery was also renewed at the time. Interestingly, the vendor purchased an industrial sewing machine from the Clarkes shoe factory for the sole purpose of making a new hood, using high-quality Double Duck canvas. The standard of the workmanship is first class.
Due to a change in circumstances, this vintage Jouffret is now available and will require re-commissioning before returning to the road. An exciting and rare opportunity indeed.
A vast history file accompanies the Jouffret, which includes the V5C registration certificate, correspondence, invoices, images, technical data, drawings, wiring diagrams and a photocopy report, dated 19 January 1921, from The Motor magazine
