1937 STANDARD FLYING 10

Registration No: APM 456
Chassis No: P6878DL
MOT: Exempt

Motor Car Location: East Sussex

  • Older restoration completed during the 1990s
  • Understood to have been first registered in East Sussex, where it still resides today
  • Offered with a full V5

Along with the rest of the Flying range, the '10' introduced in March 1936 signalled Standard's embrace of the flamboyant styling trends that were sweeping both sides of the Atlantic. In contrast to its predecessor's conservative lines and upright stance, the Flying 10 sported an arched roofline, waterfall grille, bulbous wings and a beetle-back complete with spilt rear windscreen. Built on a cruciform-braced, ladder frame chassis featuring all-round leaf-sprung suspension and four-wheel drum brakes, it was powered by a four-cylinder unit mated to four-speed manual transmission. Reputedly capable of 64mph and 33mpg, the handsome saloon provided dependable but not austere transport. Priced at £199 ex-Works, its standard specification included: a sliding roof, adjustable steering column, chrome headlamps, flat spring-steel bumper lades, external horns and twin scuttle-mounted wipers etc.

This Flying 10 is finished in the handsome combination of Grey and Blue with Blue leather interior which the vendor descirbes as excellent throughout. Owned by the vendor for around 5 years and is offered with a full V5.

Vendor Condition Ratings:

Bodywork: 'Very Good'

Engine: 'Very Good'

Electrical Equipment: 'Very Good'

Paintwork: 'Good'

Gearbox: 'Very Good'

Auctioneers Notes: This is a delightful example of a 60-year-old Standard Ensign, finished in black with red leather interior, in those days heater and leather upholstery were extras.  We do not have a lot of history of this car but we do have old MOT’s from April ’90, mileage 53,844 to 2011 mileage 59,347 which shows she has not covered many miles in the last 29 years.  She has an old green logbook and a current V5, which indicates that she has had 5 former keepers since 1959.  With this car, you get a number of original publications starting off with original sales catalogue, workshop manual, second edition, a bound spare part catalogue, accessories catalogue, practical hints to maintaining your car and instruction book.  This Ensign is fitted with a 1.6-litre engine OHV and a floor 4-speed gear change.  This super little car may be viewed by appointment.

BRIGHTWELLS AUCTIONS
Leominster Classic Motoring

Wednesday 10th July 2019

and on the day of the sale.

1931 STANDARD LITTLE NINE
2-Seater with Dickie Seat
Lot No. 44
Registration Date 1931
Make & Model Standard Little Nine Two-Seater with Dickie
Colour Yellow/Black
Registration Number YYJ 911
Chassis No. 125810AT
Engine size 1,015 cc
Engine No. 32172
Documents V5C; buff logbook; instruction manual; large history file back to the 1970s etc
Estimate £7,000 - £9,000
Coming from the same stable as the Standard Big Nine elsewhere in this catalogue, this Little Nine has the smaller 1,015cc side-valve four which offered similarly dependable 50mph performance to its larger sibling by virtue of its reduced size and weight.
Originally registered in Anglesey with the number EY 4289 in December 1931, it became YYJ 911 in 1952 – a number which Porsche owners will be sad to hear is not transferable. Our vendor acquired the car back in 1998 shortly after it had been treated to a body-off restoration. During his long ownership, he has improved the car still further, including retrimming the interior in high-quality brown leather, re-chroming the few bits of brightwork and fitting a stainless steel exhaust.
In regular use until about 15 years ago, we are told that the car has always driven well and been very reliable, certainly starting promptly and running nicely as we moved it around for these photos, although the vendor advises that it has developed a slight scraping noise at speed since the new exhaust was fitted.
An open two-seater with a foldaway dickie seat for additional passengers, it comes with a full set of weather gear (hood and side-screens) and a large history file with many invoices back to The ‘70s, an original instruction manual, buff logbook from the ‘50s and much technical literature relating to the model.
Believed to be the sole surviving example, this Little Nine would make a great pairing with the equally unique Big Nine also on offer in this sale and we rather hope that both cars will continue to stay together in the hands of an enthusiastic new owner.
