1953 AUSTIN A35 VAN - HISTORICS AUCTIONEERS Saturday 21st September 2019 Mercedes Benz World Weybridge, Surrey

FEATURED AUCTION
HISTORICS AUCTIONEERS
Saturday 21st September 2019
Mercedes Benz World
Weybridge, Surrey

1953 AUSTIN A35 VAN
Registration No: VSY 307
Chassis No: 22865
NO RESERVE

1951 saw Austin's reply to the Morris Minor, the A30 was launched at the Motor Show of that year.
A more cautious design than the Minor, the A30 was nevertheless Austin's first unitary construction car and the first to be powered by the famous A-Series engine. The A30's selling price undercut the Minor's by £10, thanks in part to such cost-cutting features as external door hinges, a solitary rear light, sliding windows and rear brakes operated by a single hydraulic cylinder via a mechanical linkage. A two-door model joined the four-door original in 1953, with van and estate versions following in 1954. The model was updated in 1956 with a wider rear window, remote gear lever and the 948cc engine, becoming the A35. Saloon production ceased on the Mini's arrival in August 1959, though the particularly popular A35 van would live on until 1968.

This A35 van was originally registered on 17th July 1963 and was purchased by the vendor in September 2012 for use as a promotional tool for their business. At the time of the purchase, the interior was a little tired and was fully re-trimmed in leather, the carpets replaced and the load area boarded and trimmed. Supervan, as the van is affectionately called, was subject to a full restoration circa 1999 by a renowned A35 specialist, which was documented and the subject of a club magazine article. Whilst being restored the engine and gearbox were replaced for 1098cc MG Midget units along with front disk brakes, anti roll bar, twin carburettors and a higher ration rear differential making for a much more useable vehicle able to keep up with modern traffic. Supplied with a V5C registration document, a handbook and some previous MoT test certificates together with a collection of invoices. This Austin A35 van is an ideal way to market a business or enjoy uncomplicated classic car motoring that is both tax and MoT exempt.

1963 AUSTIN A35
Chassis No: 27065
Estimate: £2500 - £3900

Believed to have been in the same family from new until 2018. A previous advert for the car states that the then vendor’s husband purchased the car from his uncle in 1968, it passed to his widow in 1995 and was then driven by her son in law on occasion until 2012. Side windows and rear seat conversion carried out in the late ’60s and the car was used for holidays and days out through the ’70s and ’80s. Old style logbooks and some history included in the file. Unrestored sound example.
Auctioneers notes: This Austin A35 van is quite unique and belongs to the same vendor as the Ford Thames. Included are old logbooks which back up the ownership along with some old MOTs and tax discs.

  • "Control Formula" ensuring mechanical equality across the grid. Sealed engines
  • Judged the "Most Enthralling" championship series by spectators
  • The standard of preparation of this superb example is almost 'Touring Car' level
  • Comparatively inexpensive. Very friendly club. Chance to race with some great people

During 2016/17 Julius Thurgood was inspired to create a new class of historic saloon car racing featuring the diminutive Austin A35. Known as the 'Academy' series it features very close one make racing and has managed to appear on the calendar of both the Goodwood Revival in 2016 and the Silverstone Classic in 2017. Quite an achievement!
This is the ultimate Austin A35 built for the former star of 'Dragons Den' and very successful businessman, Theo Paphitis. He simply required the very best and most solid Austin A35 road car which was acquired for him and then fully professionally built to full HRDC Academy Regulations. This included fitting fibreglass panels, racing safety equipment and a fresh 1275cc sealed Academy engine.
The car has been successfully raced and developed in the main series as well as appearing at the Goodwood Revival in 2016 - when Theo was teamed up with Le Mans legend, Tom Kristensen. Additionally it also raced at the Silverstone Classic during 2017 and ended up finishing both races well and in one piece, no mean feat when considering the closeness of the racing
Priced very realistically to sell today at a fraction of its original cost and offered, ready to race, in the Academy series which continues to run for these great little historic cars at circuits across the country. See www.hrdc.eu for full details.
