1965 JAGUAR E-TYPE SERIES 1 ROADSTER (4.2)
Lot No: 143
Registration No: EUL 467C
Chassis No: 1E1235
Engine No: 7E3755-9
Estimate: £100,000 - £110,000

Upon its introduction at the 1961 Geneva Salon, Jaguar’s E-Type was an immediate hit, with its sleek design backed up by staggering performance. The newcomer’s appearance owed much to that of the racing D-Type and indeed the E-Type would be one of the last great sports cars developed directly from a successful competition ancestor. Just as with the D-Type, a monocoque tub formed the main body/chassis structure while a tubular spaceframe extended forwards to support the engine. The latter was the same 3.8-litre, triple-SU carburettor fed ‘S’ unit first offered as an option on the preceding XK150. With a claimed 265 horsepower on tap, the E-Type’s performance furthered the standards set by the preceding XK models: firstly, because it weighed around 500lbs less than the XK150 and secondly because aerodynamicist Malcolm Sayer used experience gained with the D-Type to create one of the most elegant and efficient shapes ever to grace a motor car.

This superb example is presented in one of the most attractive colour combinations of Opalescent Silver Blue with dark blue leather interior and is one of only 338 produced for the UK market that year. It was originally distributed by Henlys Limited in London and dispatched on 6th May 1965 and we believe the first owner was resident in London, having the car registered in the same registration it retains today. Interestingly, this car was owned by the entrepreneur Peter De Savary and exhibited in his museum at Littlecote House near Hungerford during the late 1980s. The car was sold in 1994 and kept in Aldershot before being purchased by the current owner in July 2000. From 2008 to 2011, the car was the subject of a nut and bolt restoration by PJS Engineering in Fleet, by Paul Slade at a cost exceeding £100,000.

This restoration work included:
• New panels to the floor, rear end, inner valance, tonneau top, door skins, inner and outer sills.
• Front and rear suspension
• Braking system
• New wiring looms and electrical
• Engine rebuild including rebore, pistons, main bearings, oil pump
• Gearbox and transmission
• Complete retrim including hood and envelope
• Five 5.0 x 15” 72 spoke chrome wire wheels with curly hubs. Five Dunlop 185VR15 SP Sport tyres
• Re-chroming and cadmium/zinc plating

The restoration was completed in time to take part in the lap of the Silverstone Circuit to mark the 50th anniversary of the Jaguar E-Type in 2011. The car has only done 5,400 miles since the restoration. This is one of nicest examples of this British iconic classic on the market today.

1973 JAGUAR E-TYPE SERIES III ROADSTER - HISTORICS AUCTIONEERS Saturday 21st September 2019 Mercedes Benz World Weybridge, Surrey

FEATURED AUCTION
HISTORICS AUCTIONEERS
Saturday 21st September 2019
Mercedes Benz World
Weybridge, Surrey

1973 JAGUAR E-TYPE SERIES III ROADSTER
Registration No: XGU 926M
Chassis No: 1S2312
Engine No: 7S13227SB
Estimate: £65,000 - £72,000

  • Matching numbers original car
  • Manual gearbox
  • Good history
The E-Type Series III was introduced in 1971, with a new 5.3 litre, V12 engine, uprated brakes and standard power steering. Optionally, an automatic transmission, wire wheels and air conditioning were available. The brand new V12 engine came with four Zenith carburettors and was claimed to produce 272bhp, more torque, and 0-60mph acceleration of less than seven seconds, which was phenomenal for the price of the car at that time, considering its competition in the market place. The short wheelbase fixed-head coupé body style was discontinued, with the Series III available only as a convertible and 2+2 coupé. The newly used longer wheelbase now offered significantly more room in all directions. These models were easily identifiable by the large cross-slatted front grille, flared wheel arches, wider tyres, four exhaust tips and a badge on the rear that proclaims it to be a V12. It is thought that only 7,990 convertibles and 7,297 fixed head cars were produced.
This righthand drive Jaguar E-Type V12 Roadster is a UK supplied car fitted with manual transmission. It is finished in its original Green Sand coachwork with Olive leather interior and has covered just 50,000 miles from new. The previous vendor purchased this car from an elderly gentleman who had it for many years. The car comes with all of its original service/instruction books including the original service book which shows the early service records. There is also a large file of receipts showing work done on the car by the present owner, this includes a £12,000 bill for work carried out by Southern Classics for mechanicals and around £4000 at the Trim Centre for the seats which were rebuilt but have maintained their original leather. The doors and sills have been wax oiled and according to the vendor, he believes, no welding work has ever been done to the chassis, as can be seen upon inspection. This example is in very good condition and the mileage is thought to be correct, which the condition would support; it also comes with a Jaguar Heritage Certificate. The car has done just over 3,100 miles in the last 11 years and has been MoT'd eight times in that period. This is a wonderful and evocative British classic which still makes your hair stand on end when the howl of its V12 can be heard when flat out!

  • A UK-supplied, matching numbers, Series 3, 2 + 2 automatic in Jaguar Light Blue
  • Recently emerged from 40 years in storage and now ripe for a full restoration
  • The fuel system and tank were cleaned, new spark plugs, oil and filter fitted
  • New starter motor fitted and the car started straight away with excellent oil pressure
  • The appropriate registration number 'VEE 12J' will remain with the car
  • A lovely original Series 3 that could be an outstanding example of the marque when finished
The Series 3 V12 was the final version of the famous E-Type and was introduced in 1971 as a 2 + 2 Coupe or Roadster variant. The car that Enzo Ferrari once claimed was the "Most beautiful car in the world" finally ended production in 1974 and was eventually replaced by the Jaguar XJS.
This particular car is a UK-supplied Series 3 V12 Coupe fitted with an automatic gearbox and has had just one owner from new. The rather appropriate registration number, VEE 12J, has been on the car from new and does indeed form part of the sale.
This is a matching numbers car and still in its original colour scheme, as confirmed by the Heritage Certificate in the paperwork, and has very recently emerged from some 40 years in storage. The engine was found to turn over freely, so the fuel system and tank were cleaned, new spark plugs, oil and filter fitted, along with a new starter motor and - hey presto- she started straight away with excellent oil pressure. The brake system has been gone through, fresh fluid bled into the system, and all transmission fluids refreshed. The car drove superbly and today is a totally original example with no obvious welding anywhere, all original panels and floors, and good quality panel gaps throughout.

This remarkable survivor is now ripe for a full restoration and will become an outstanding example of the marque when finished. A rare and very special opportunity with a realistic price guide.
