COYS AUCTIONS
TUESDAY 5th DECEMBER 2017
The Royal Horticultural Society,

Westminster, London, SW1P 2PE

1937 MERCEDES BENZ 540K CABRIOLET A
Chassis No -  169355

Introduced at the 1936 Paris Motor Show, the Friedrich Geiger designed car was a development to the 500K, itself a development of the SSK. Available as a two-seater cabriolet, four seater coupé or seven seater limousine with armoured sides and armoured glass, it was one of the largest cars of the time.
The Sindelfingen factory, where this exclusive bodywork was created, employed 1,500 people to create the 540K for some of the world’s wealthiest and most famous, such as Jack L. Warner of Warner Brothers, and allowed a great deal of individual customisation.
Rolling off the assembly line in Sidelfingen in 1937, it is confirmed by the factory records that #169355 is an original 540K Cabriolet A that was delivered new to Berlin on the 2nd of July 1937.
It was shortly after World-War II that the car was purchased by Editoriale Domus on behalf of Gianinni Mazzocci, – founder of Quattroruote, who purchased the car as one of the main features of his prestigious car collection.  There it remained completely unmolested until in 1966, when the car was recommissioned to allow for participation in numerous classic car events.

As time passed, it was becoming clear that #169355 was in need of a thorough restoration and by its 57th birthday in 1993, it had been decided. The comprehensive restoration that would be to last over ten years was entrusted to none other than specialist Vittorio Klun of Milan, under the close scrutiny of Frederick Robutti, – head of the Quattroruote Museum. Restoration work included work to the car’s ash wood body frame and brightwork. The original body was in excellent condition and was simply stripped and repainted, and the mechanics were rebuilt as new.
Only at this point did it become clear that white was not the original colour. In several places on the body, clear traces of two shades of blue were found proving that the car was originally finished in the two-tone it is seen in today.
Fabio Calligaris, owner of the renowned trimming specialists Grantusimo, was entrusted with the restoration of all the interior of the car including the roof.
Obviously the car is desirable being an original Cabriolet A, but being in single ownership from shortly after WWII to date, this could arguably be the only surviving Cabriolet A with such impeccable ownership provenance.
In the late thirties there was nothing on the road that surpassed the Mercedes-Benz 540K for style, image, effect, and performance, and resultantly it is known by the world to be the first supercar ever made. That statement is no less true today, particularly in the case of this exceptional example.

 1966 ALFA ROMEO GTC
Chassis No - 760028

After World War II, Alfa Romeo were able to return to manufacturing Italian automobiles, however a new model was not launched until 1950. The new design being the 1900, a twin overhead cam 1859cc 4-cylinder saloon. However, it was the second model produced that proved significant, the Guilietta of 1954, a 2+2 by Bertone. The vehicle was powered by a light alloy 1290cc DOHC four cylinder. Named “sprint” it was fittingly capable of high speeds for its engine size reaching 102mph. Design by Orazio Satta Puliga, an engineer who had joined Alfa in 1938 and succeeded Wilfredo Ricart as head of design in 1946.

The Berlina model hit the production line in 1955, and soon afterwards a Spider convertible by Pininfarina was available. In 1957, two limited-production models were added, the Sprint Speciale by Bertone, and the Sprint Zagato by that Milanese coachbuilder.

In 1962 alfa Romeo introduced the Giulietta’s successor, the Guilia a Sprint GT coupe version which followed in 1963, with engines available in many different specifications. The suspension had been tweaked and disc brakes were added all around.

Just 1,000 GTCs were built from 1964 to 1966, most of them left-hand drive models. This particular example presented in white with a grey interior is a rare right hand drive example of which just 99 where ever built for the market.

Having been sold out of a deceased estate, in recent years the car has undergone a comprehensive restoration and is now found in a wonderful condition that is most difficult to fault. Invoices totalling around £50,000 depict the restoration in great detail and can be found in the cars history file.

Cosmetic works include a bare metal respray, new inner and outer seals, complete set of floors, both front wings, nearside rear quarter wing, and rear panel. All of the cars brightwork has been either re-chromed or replaced, new tyres have been fitted and the interior has been completely re-trimmed from the carpets right through to the leather upholstery and roof.

All of the cars mechanical work has been completed by marque specialists such as Stanton Motors and includes; new complete wiring loom, new exhaust system, cleaned and inspected gearbox, overhauled rear axle, suspension and steering. All fuel lines have been replaced as have the brake master cylinder, servo, rear callipers and all brake lines. And most importantly the engine has been rebuilt by Stanton Motors and was followed up by a dyno compression test. Results also included in the history file.

This is a matching engine example of one of the rarest specification Alfa-Romeo’s one can find. Having undergone a no-expense spared restoration, this car is not to be missed.

Supplied with period buff logbook, fresh MOT as well as original books.

1955 Bentley Series 1 Sports Saloon by Hooper

1956 Earls Court Motor Show Car - 1 of 4 examples produced by Hooper

The Hooper bodied Series 1 was a sensation at the 1956 Earls Court Motor Show, with Autocar describing it “attractive” with a “superlative finish”. They were impressed by the detailed Australian Bee’s Wing eucalyptus wood trim of the interior which was “used to great effect”.
The car carries a distinctive, dramatically flowing aluminium body by Hooper, which is more than 80 lbs lighter than the standard steel saloon. It has cut-away spats over the rear wheels and the rare eucalyptus wood is found on the dashboard, door tops, map tray and rear picnic tables. The interior seating and door trims are in leather. Only 4 Bentley S1 cars were built with this coachwork.
Mrs. Janet White of Felixstowe ordered this wonderful example which was despatched from the works just before the Christmas of 1955. The Hooper was later owned and exported to Seattle in the U.S. by Robert and Rita Irwin, who went on to own the car for 37 years. Following a sale by Gooding and Company in 2008, the Bentley was repatriated into the UK, later travelling to France and joining a private collection in Clarbec. Chassis B460AN was kept in the collection before it was sold in late 2012, returning once more to the UK.
Finished in Alpine Mist with a Parchment leather interior, and offered with a thick file of supporting documentation over a long period, this is a wonderfully stylish motor has recently enjoyed light restoration works and is ready to be enjoyed by its next custodian.
