1970 MG C - Silverstone Auction 23-05-15

"COMING TO AUCTION"

THE WING, SILVERSTONE CIRCUIT

1970 MG C
Registration: LVG 798H
Chassis Number: GCD1/7464G
Engine Number: Not Specified
Number of cylinders: 6
CC: 2912cc
Year of Manufacture: 1970
Estimate (£): 14,000 - 18,000

The MGC had the potential to be a very good selling sports car because it offered everything the MGB lacked and was very attractively priced. As the British Leyland Group took control the MGC was dropped in favour of the Triumph products that BL favoured. The MGC would have been in direct competition to the TR6. Two lightweight race versions were built, RMO 699F and MBL 546E affectionately known as ‘Romeo and Mable' competing in the Targa Florio and Sebring. HRH Prince of Wales used his MGC GT extensively in the seventies.
Offered here is a modified MGC that was raced in period by Mark Burnside. Our vendor is only the second owner of this significant car which came into his prossession in 2010. At that point the engine was rebuilt by Steve James Engineering incorporating new Cosworth pistons, valves and new valve seats. The crankshaft and rods were crack tested and the Dellorto's were set up to produce 280 BHP. The front suspension is rose-jointed and the rear axle has tramp bars fitted. The gearbox is a 5-speed T5 Borg Warner and completes with a limited slip differential.

This MGC is a very quick car which held various lap records in its day. It now offers numerous options for competition. With it's period history the prospect of gaining historic papers could be a very worthwhile proposition.

Westfield Sportscars are manufacturers of both factory built and kit versions of several two-seater, open top sportscars. Their main product line is a Lotus Seven inspired car which was originally designed by Colin Chapman with only the bare essentials for motoring in order to give the rawest and most exhilarating driving experience. Westfield has sold over 12000 cars world wide since 1983 and currently produce over 400 cars a year for driving enthusiasts the world over.

Offered here is a 2003 Westfield SEiW with the Ford Pinto 2.0 litre engine and only four previous owners. It has the big valve head, FR33 fast road camshaft and with twin 40 DCOE Webers it produces around 130bhp. It has a Ford five speed gearbox and discs all round. The most recent work includes replacement of various gaskets to make it oil tight. The cambelt and tensioner have been replaced together with waterpump, thermostat and all the hoses. The electrical system has new plug leads, rebuilt alternator and starter motor by Lucas Coil. The suspension has been rebuilt and new brake pads fitted together with a fluid change. The speedometer reads just 11,000 miles. It has full weather equipment consisting of factory side screens and hood. Westfield wind deflectors and rear carbon wheel arches complete the look. It has a full MOT and genuine Westfield mats.

Very little can beat the performance of these Westfileds and our example represents a fun package in great condition.

1937 ASTON MARTIN 15/98 2.0litre LONG CHASSIS TOURER - Silverstone Auctions 23/05/15

"COMING TO AUCTION"
FROM
THE WING, SILVERSTONE CIRCUIT
23rd MAY 2015

1937 ASTON MARTIN 15/98 2.0litre
LONG CHASSIS TOURER
Registration: KMG 202
Chassis Number: C9/788/LT
Engine Number: 788
Number of cylinders: 4
CC: 1998cc
Year of Manufacture: 1937
Estimate (£): 160,000 - 190,000

In early 1935 Sir Arthur Sutherland, who had been persuaded to take the chair at Aston Martin, eventually convinced Bert Bertelli, the Technical Director and Head of Design at Aston since 1926, that despite the huge success of their racing programme and the popularity of the earlier sporting cars like the "T-Type, International, Le Mans and Ulster the company's financial future could only be secured by concentrating on road cars.
New cars appeared for Le Mans in 1936. They were two seaters broadly similar to the Ulster but with a longer stroke, 100 hp, 2 litre version of the well proven wet sump engine. The title 15/98 referred to the new type's fiscal horsepower and rated power. A prototype short chassis four seater managed 82mph and for the first time it seemed the company had a chassis suitable for four passenger coachwork. In all between 1936 and '39, 176 2 litre 15/98s were produced of which 24 were Abbey bodied Long Chassis Tourers, Aston's first luxury 4 seat touring car.
KMG 202 was completed on the 31st. of May, 1937 although not registered until the 25th. March, 1939 when it was sold at a cost of £575. An old style buff log book from 1955 to 1970 is also present as is the last MoT certificate before the car was "mothballed".
The original wet sump was converted by the factory in 1954 to dry, as this was regarded as advantageous on high performance engines preventing oil surge on fast corners. Whilst KMG was not built for competition the car took part in the first St.John Horsfall Handicap at Silverstone in July 1950 and the original programme is still with the car.
KMG 202 had not been on the road since 1970 and was owned by the same family and kept in dry storage until the current owner purchased the car in 2011 as a "barn find" and commissioned a no expense spared chassis up restoration using the well respected pre war Aston specialist Andy Bell from Ecurie Bertelli Ltd.
A complete bottom end rebuild was carried out. This included re-lining and epoxy sealing an original cylinder block and fitting a steel crankshaft and steel connecting rods, the crank being on white metal and the rods on thin wall bearings. New high compression pistons were used and a new rear main oil seal housing was also installed. All new parts were fitted, where required, in to the block including a new oil pump, timing gears and shafts, and a modern timing chain tensioner.
The top end was also completely overhauled with new valves, rocker gear and camshaft in the crack tested and ground cylinder head. The carburettors and distributor were also rebuilt. When finished the engine was run on a dyno and the test results are available.
The gearbox was also stripped and rebuilt with new bearings and bushes. The front suspension and steering were rebuilt with a new steering box, kingpins, trunnion bushes and the springs re shimmed with the main leafs being replaced. The braking system was stripped out and refitted and all compensators and actuators repaired where required. A new battery, starter motor, water and fuel pumps were fitted as was a new exhaust and manifold. The radiator was rebuilt and re-cored and a complete new wiring harness was designed, assembled and fitted.
Externally a brand new body tub, boot and door skins, and inner boot panels were fabricated and fitted followed by a concours standard high build primer and paint finish. Chrome components, mostly original were stripped, polished and re chromed. The car was completely re trimmed in high grade bourbon hide complemented by red Wilton carpet and new authentic wheels and tyres were fitted.  The hood, side screens, tonneau cover and hood bag were recovered in black "Double Duck" fabric. Ingenious direction indicators are concealed within the wing mounted side lights.
In October 2013 the car achieved 1st. place in the AMOC Concours D' Etat for pre war cars at Broughton Castle in Oxfordshire.
As well as looking amazing we are told KMG 202 drives extremely well with all pressures and temperatures as they should be, and approximately 1500 miles have been completed since the renovation.
This immaculately presented 15/98 is the ultimate classic four seat grand tourer from this famous marque.

1967 BRA COBRA 289 - Silverstone Auctions 23-05-15

"COMING TO AUCTION"
FROM

  23rd MAY 2015
THE WING, SILVERSTONE CIRCUIT

1967 BRA COBRA 289

Registration: SRR 289F
Chassis Number: 289070
Engine Number: 10A35570
Number of cylinders: 8
CC: 3500cc
Year of Manufacture: 1967
Estimate (£): 18,000 - 22,000

Designed by John Berry and Peter Ibbotson, the BRA 289 was the first Cobra 289 replica to be produced in the UK and was built up on moulds taken directly from one of the original early 289s. Between 1981 and 1998 when production ceased, 260 cars are believed to have been built at the small Doncaster factory. During the latter days of production the car was known as the Tyler 289, the project having been purchased by Tyler Mouldings in 1996.
The car offered for sale here today is chassis #070 (from 260) and was manufactured in 1989 using a 1967 MGB as the donor. This car therefore benefits from being tax exempt, and carried a period registration initially from manufacture until 1998 when it was married with a ‘289' registration number to suit the car.
Offered in excellent condition in the unusual Ferrari paint colour of Rosso Corsa, the car's lines are incredibly similar to that of the 1962 AC 289 it emulates. The body is made of GRP which has taken the paint very well, save for one unfortunate blemish on the top of the offside wing and one or two small stone chips at the front. The seats are in black leather piped in red and are in excellent order, with only light signs of wear. The black carpets are near new as is a quality, period correct, tonneau cover and the dashboard boasts correct period style Stewart Warner (SW) instruments and gauges. The power plant is the ubiquitous 3.5 litre Rover V8 fed through a downdraught Holley carburettor and emitting the classic, chest rattling, V8 rumble through twin stainless steel exhausts when given a prod.
Belonging to the current owner since 2009, he has lavished sincere care and attention on this car as a host of invoices and receipts demonstrate. The latest of these from, December 2014, relates to recent mechanical work including removing the cylinder heads and replacing all gaskets at a cost of more than £1,000.
The impressive history file with this car includes many MOTs, correspondence, receipts and invoices relating as far back as the original build in the late 1980s. This cataloguer highly rates this lovely Cobra replica, and describes it as an absolutely honest car that one would be proud to own. A real head turner....

1974 FORD ESCORT RS2000

Registration: GNY 878N
Chassis Number: BFATPB00462
Engine Number: PB00462
Number of cylinders: 4
CC: 1993
Year of Manufacture: 1974
Estimate (£): 12,000 - 14,000

The Escort RS2000 was the last car to be introduced to the AVO production range, introduced in the June of 1973. The car fitted nicely into the AVO range with its performance almost comparable to the complex RS1600, but with the reliability and ease of maintenance of the Mexico. The car used the same type 49-body shell as the Mexico and RS1600. Fortunately, there was a new engine in use at Ford, the 2-litre overhead cam Pinto design, which Ford then decided to use instead. Fords then had the major problem to persuade the new bulky Pinto engine to fit into the engine bay, which was something it had never been meant to do. The only way of achieving this was by discarding the engine driver cooling fan and replacing it with a thermostatically controlled Kenlowe fan. The engine produced 100bhp (2bhp more than in the Cortina). The gearbox was the German type e-box and was totally different from the RS1600. They used a final drive of 3.54:1. The car was launched in England on 11th October 1973 priced at £1586.

This 1974 Ford RS 2000 is an ideal introduction for any peddler, young or old, into the world of historic rallying. Built around a seam welded and strengthened body shell, the specification is rather impressive. It boasts a: 14-point roll cage, marathon rally seats, alloy sump guard, world cup spec suspension with Bilstein dampers, quick rack, 60 litre alloy fuel tank, braided lines, Group 1 vented front discs, recent re-loom and drycell battery. The engine is a freshly rebuilt Pinto that develops a healthy 140 bhp with a gas-flowed head, Schmitt pistons, 4-2-1 Ashley manifold and is mated to a 5-speed STD Sierra gearbox.

Finishished in Signal Yellow, the car is registered on the V5C document as a Ford RS2000 that was first registered in 1974 and comes with FIVA papers. The last keeper used the vehicle for events such as the Promax World Cup Rally in 2001 and a number of local rallying events. Since then this Ford has been maintained by respected specialist Gareth Williams at Sweep Motorsport. Gareth is happy to talk to prospective buyers and provide an objective evaluation on the car's condition.

Offered at a most realistic estimate, it would cost many many thousands of pounds to build an historic Mk I Escort to this specification. We encourage any inspection and buyers are encouraged to contact the office before the auction to arrange a viewing.

1952 Fiat 1100 Pick-up -Coys Auction 16/05/15

"COMING TO AUCTION"

A253_online.jpg

1952 FIAT 1100 PICK-UP

 210 - 1952 Fiat 1100 Pick-up

 Estimate: £10,000 - £14,000

Registration Number: Italian Registered
Chassis Number: TBA
The Fiat 1100 was first introduced in 1937 as an updated version of the 508 “Balilla” with a look similar to the 1936 Fiat 500 “Topolino” and the larger 1500, with the typical late-thirties heart-shaped front grille, with styling by the emerging designer Dante Giacosa. It was powered by a 1,089 cc four-cylinder overhead-valve engine rather than the earlier Balilla's 1-litre unit.
Drive was to the rear wheels through a four-speed gearbox, and for the period, its comfort, handling, and performance were prodigious, making it “the only people's car that was also a driver's car”. Unusual for a modestly priced car of the time was the independent front suspension, while the rear had a leaf sprung live axle. Subsequently the car underwent a partial restyling around the front end and gained new streamlined window-shaped louvres and was renamed the 1100B and was popularly known as the “1100 musone”. After World War II, in 1949, the car was re-introduced with a curvy trunk and new name, the 1100E. The 1100E also received a bit more power, and now had 35 PS (26 kW). Both the 508C and the 1100B were also available as the long wheelbase 508L which was mainly used for vans and taxis.
The car on offer today is a Fiat 1100 in the pick-up version with wood panels, with the body in good condition having benefitted from a repaint some 7 years ago. This body style is one of the most beautiful versions of the Fiat 1100 used for commercial work with the condition of the engine in good order and we are informed the driving experience is very good too.

1972 FORD CRAYFORD CORTINA- COYS 16/05/15

SATURDAY 16th MAY 2015
1972 FORD CRAYFORD CORTINA
  225 - 1972 Ford Crayford Cortina

Estimate: £9,000 - £12,000
Registration Number: NMC 31K
Chassis Number: BABTLP26153
The Crayford Cortina MK.2 had become Crayford's best ever selling car with over 400 sales, due mostly to its clean open style and a long production run of over four years. But in 1970 the Ford Motor Company introduced an all new Mk.3 Cortina with its distinctively American coke bottle look. Crayford followed on with a Mk3 Crayford Cortina, which also took on a new direction, it was not even called a convertible, but a “Sunshine Conversion” in its press literature. Like French and Italian predecessors, for example the Fiat 500 and Renault, it had a full length sunroof that folded all the way back down to the boot. Retaining its side -windows and roof gutters helped maintain more of the convertible's upper body strength. As an option the main hood support bar in the centre at the B post, could also be dropped with the hood. This gave all 5 passengers clear open sky views, or in the up position it was also a safety roll hoop.
All Mk.1 & 2 cars had to be stripped completely internally and then interiors rebuilt after the conversions; this was an expensive process that kept production down to two cars a week. With the more simple conversion on the Mk.3 sunshine roof, gone was the fully open Crayford look but build speed doubled and so did profits, total production over a long run again reached 400-plus sales. But as David McMullan the MD once said, it was our best profit maker ever, so it has to be my favourite Crayford.
Finished in its original colour of Daytona Yellow, this delightful original Crayford Cortina has been subject to a recent restoration in 2014. Photographs of the work are available in the cars file. Mechanically, both engine and transmission are in good order, with an MoT until May 2016. This very rare little car is well known to the Crayford register and should not be missed.
